There are multiple stages to kitten growth, but veterinarians consider cats to be adult when theyre 1 year or older. This means that by your kittens first birthday, he should be eating adult cat food.

Unfortunately, female kittens can go into their first heat cycle as young as 4-5 months of agewhich means kittens are capable of carrying kittens. Thats why you should spay and neuter your cats early!

Moving Into Adulthood And Lifestyle Changes: Your Cats Changing Nutritional Needs

When your kitten has reached the age of 6 months, with sexual maturity fast approaching, this is sometimes considered the best time to consider neutering. For health reasons, many veterinarians often recommend early neutering when your kitten is between 4 and 6 months old. It is important to be aware that neutering will have certain consequences on your cats appetite and metabolism. For example, a neutered cats ability to burn calories is modified and weight gain could increase up to 20% quickly . There is a chance she may also be more inclined to beg for food in an attempt to satisfy her new found hunger. Hence, it is crucial to pay close attention to her body weight throughout this potentially tricky 18 week period following neutering and to closely monitor her food intake.

Basics For Healthy Fur On A Cat

How long does it take for a cat

As a recap, growing a cat’s hair and keeping it in optimal condition are based on the following aspects:

  • Stress control: this can prevent telogen effluvium as well as other dermatological problems. Stress affects the immune system, lowers their defenses and can cause the conditions which facilitate hair loss.
  • Brushing: some cats will need more brushing than others, but all will benefit from regular brushing to remove dead hair and promote new growth.
  • Diet: a nutrient rich diet which has the correct amount of protein, vitamins and minerals to ensure healthy skin and fur is essential.
  • Deworming: this is essential as infestations of mites and insects can serious damage your cat’s skin and lead to hair loss. Regular deworming will keep these pests at bay and encourage a healthy coat.
  • Veterinarian: regular vet check ups will mean you can keep an eye on any conditions which may be developing. They can provide treatment when it is needed and ensure they are healthy to grow their hair.

From Kittens To Big Cats

The easy answer is – cats stop growing when they have fully matured. That means their bones will not grow any further and their sexual maturity begins as well. Usually, it happens when your cat is 8 months to a year old.

Sexual maturity in felines begins at around 8-month mark and continues for a couple of months after that. It is important to take care of their diet during their growing stage so they mature normally.

How Fast Does Cat Hair Grow

There is no definite rate at which a cats hair grows. For long-haired cat breeds, hair growth to full length can take anywhere between four months to half a year. For short-haired cats, you can expect your pet to grow his hair back between a few weeks to three months.

To better understand the rate of regrowth of your cats fur, it is a good idea to have a basic idea of the feline hair growth cycle. This hair growth cycle is divided into three phases: anagen, catagen, and telogen.

In the anagen phase, your cats fur grows the fastest. This phase is followed by the catagen phase where your cats fur stops growing. Finally, in the telogen phase, your cats fur falls out to make way for new hair growth.

Typically, cats shed twice a year, coinciding with the changing of the seasons. Generally, cats shed before winter to make way for thicker fur and another time during spring to prepare for the coming of summer.

However, due to exposure to artificial lights, most indoor cats shed fur almost all year round.

When Should I Feed My Kitten Adult Cat Food

The right time to transition your cat from kitten to adult food is dependent on many factors. For most cats, around 10-12 months of age is appropriate.

However, a young Maine Coon who is struggling to keep weight on could probably benefit from remaining on kitten food until they are 2 years old or even longer. On the other hand, a kitten who is maturing quickly and becoming overweight on kitten food might benefit from switching at around 8 months of age.

Ask your veterinarian when your cat is ready to make sure you are meeting her nutritional needs.

The First Year And Upwards

When your cat turns one year old you can safely move from kitten food to adult cat food without looking back. Watch what kind of habits he has and if they need adjusting – now is the time.

Animals like routine and if you get your cat used to certain feeding times, he will come and ask for food, but you can adjust it and your pet will adjust with you.

However, if you have a larger cat breed, your cat will not be considered a full adult until he turns at least two. Their maturity happens later and sometimes can even only be complete between the ages of two and four so if you are not sure about it – see your vet and get a consultation about the best plan of action.

As cats mature they calm down and even though they still play, their social behavior is calmer. It depends on your cats breed and personality so there are no set guarantees what kind of cat you will have. It’s possible that spayed cats could have the kitten-like lifestyle for longer. They also will love the attention and affection longer if not into old age.

Many people choose to spay or neuter their cats to prevent pregnancy. Many people are concerned about their male cats spraying to mark their territory. It is also possible that if you spay or neuter your cat early enough, it will prevent spraying. However, it has to be done before your kitty turns six months old.

How Long Do Kittens Grow And When Do They Stop

Most of a cats growth happens in the first six months, Demos says. During this period, theres an exponential growth curve. Kittens are putting on a lot of weight, gaining muscle mass, and their bones are lengthening at a rapid rate. Kittens can eat as much as they want at this stage because they need the nutrients to build proper bone and muscle structure, Demos says.

Kittens do a lot of learning during this phase too. Its a good time to expose your cat to experiences you want them to be open to in the future, like nail trimming and eating different types of foods .

You can expect your cat to be almost fully grown after a year. For the average cat, 95 percent of growth is complete by nine to 12 months, reports Demos.

Month : Your Kitten Is Confident

Your kitten may start to play more with other pets in your house since its confidence is at an all-time high. Supervision is still a necessity though, as larger pets like dogs can still do damage to an eight-month-old kitten.

Be aware that your kitten is now large enough to attempt counter surfing, it may push items around or off of tables out of curiosity, and it will test the limits of both human and inanimate objects. Setting boundaries and being consistent in any training with your kitten is important. Kittens do not respond to force, so if you are trying to train it to do or not do something, you’ll need to use positive reinforcement and patience to get the outcome you want. Verbal praise and tasty cat treats can go a long way in cat training.

Nutritional Requirements And Lifestyle Factors

As your kitten transitions into adulthood, it is important to keep up with her changing needs. In addition to her slower growth rate, her nutritional requirements depend on certain lifestyle factors. Among others, these may include decreased physical activity depending on whether your cat has access to the outdoors or not, whether she is neutered, and if she rules the roost or has to share her home with another cat or dog, which tends to keep her more stimulated than if she is on her own. For instance, as one might expect, a young adult cat with access to the outdoors and who sometimes plays with another household pet is likely to have higher calorie requirements than that of a lone indoor cat with a more sedentary lifestyle.

The Art Of The Smooth Transition

Switching your cat from kitten food to adult cat food should be done gradually and requires a little organization. Transitioning too rapidly may lead to digestive issues for your cat. A gradual shift over the course of 5-8 days is best to allow her to get used to her new diet. Start by mixing a small amount, say 10%, of adult food with the kitten food. Every two days increase the percentage of adult food. Normally, by day seven or eight your kitten will have successfully made the switch. If you have not already done so, it is often recommended to begin to steadily introduce different flavours and textures of food, including both dry and wet food. This will help ensure that your cat does not become a picky eater. In addition, certain cats naturally love variety.

How Can I Prevent Maximal Growth And Obesity

Growing kittens need higher amounts of all nutrients in comparison to adult cats, but excess energy calories and calcium can create serious problems. Preventing obesity must begin during the weaning stage and continue through to adulthood and old age. Being overweight or obese sets the stage for many complications and diseases, including:

  • hypertension
  • heat intolerance

Free-choice feeding increases the risks for higher levels of body fat and becoming overweight or obese. Portion feeding provides the greatest opportunity to prevent kittens from becoming overweight or obese – they do best when their total daily portion of food is offered in 3-4 small meals or more each day. Also note that dry foods are more calorie-dense than canned foods, and canned foods tend to be more tasty than dry.

“Free-choice feeding increases the risks for higher levels of body fat and becoming overweight or obese.”

With planning and attention to detail, you can lay the foundation for your kitten’s optimal health and longevity. Together with your veterinarian and veterinary healthcare team, you can help your kitten grow into as healthy of an adult cat as possible.

What Happens If A Cat Loses Its Whiskers

The loss of a couple of whiskers here and there isnt going to make a massive difference. In fact, natural whisker loss is healthy. The problems arise when owners deliberately trim all of the whiskers or decide to pluck those they see as ugly or unimportant. The cat then loses this ability to feel what is around them and may become anxious about their surroundings. They wont feel confident enough to climb or explore.

What Is The Average Lifespan Of A Feral Cat

How Long Does It Take for Cats to Get Along With New ...

The lifespan of a feral cat is often stated as only 2-3 years. Not in our experience. Many caretakers know of free-roaming cats that reach 12 to 15 years of age. Long-term studies are underway to determine longevity. If a feral cat survives kittenhood, his average lifespan is less than two years if living on his own. If a cat is lucky enough to be in a colony that has a caretaker, he may reach 10 years.

Preliminary data reveal that tom cats live the shortest, but neutering them increases their lifespan to that of a spayed female cat. Not all colony cats live to a ripe old age, but many live far longer than the urban myth projects.
