Recommendations For Owners Who Stick With Dry Food

Dry food can be fed but must be done by careful measure, specific meals and no snacking. Todays dry foods have much better ingredients allowing for a higher number of usable calories per cup, so even less is needed compared to the Little Friskies of 30 years ago.

Feeding multiple feedings a day is useful but can be a source of contention as the cat tries to get to be fed in between feedings. No open bowls of food should be available. Dry food is offered for a set amount of time, and any leftover food is removed until the next feeding. Sometimes, taking the bowls up, so there is no reminder of the lack of food is helpful to limit begging.

How Often Should You Feed Your Cat

Written by Tracy Dion, August 2012, and updated and published in Catnip Chronicles, November 2012.

There is a lot of confusion around how often a domesticated cat should be fed. Most cats are either free-fed or fed only once or twice a day, and convenience to the owner is the driving factor.

But is this good for the cats?

Lets look at the science first. According to the National Research Councils Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats, feral cats eat about 8 to 12 meals in any given 24 hour period. Their behavior is geared towards small, frequent meals and they spend a great deal of their time actively hunting.

Their digestive physiology is affected by their eating habits. Smelling food triggers a cats digestive system to begin working, and constantly smelling food as free-fed cats do keeps that system primed and ready to go all day. Like all physiological functions, the GI tract requires energy to operate constantly keeping it on pulls resources from other systems and, depending upon the quality of nutrition the cat routinely receives, can cause problems including premature aging, poor coat quality, and chronic cystitis.

Clearly, then, free-feeding is not a healthy practice.

On the other end of the spectrum, the cats stomach cant expand like the dogs to accommodate large meals, and cats can and often do regurgitate if fed too much at one time, as might happen with a cat fed only once or twice daily.

What Are Some Other Signs Of Abnormalities

There are other things to look for in cats urine as well that may be signs of an issue:

  • Blood. If you notice blood or a dark-colored-stained trail from the litter box across the floor, notify your veterinarian as soon as you can. Blood in the urine can sign a urinary tract infection , bladder stones, or blood clots. These conditions can cause inflammation and infection and could lead to the obstruction of the urethra, causing a potentially life-threatening inability to urinate. A urethral blockage can occur in just a few hours and must be treated medically as soon as possible.
  • Colorless urine: Other changes to look out for are colorless pee. Pale, watery urine that is clear and colorless often indicates dilute urine, a possible sign of kidney disease or diabetes. If you notice a color or consistency change in your cats urine, contact your veterinarian.
  • Urinating out of the box: Felines with UTI or renal disease will often time pee outside the litterbox. If your family friend is constantly urinating outside of the box, or next to it, consider contacting your veterinarian.

Dry Food Or Canned Food

This choice really depends on you, the owner. Dry food consisting of sufficient nutrients is essential for your cat. Dry food must be enriched in animal proteins and should contain fewer plant proteins because of the low digestive ability among cats for the plant proteins.

Carbohydrates is another important component in your catâs diet. If a cat is fed dry food most of the time, then your cat should drink a lot of water to digest that dry food. Wet food comprises of meat and approximately seventy to eighty percent water. Thus, dry food can also be given in an appropriate ratio with the wet food as well. Just as in humans, their taste varies for dry and wet food.

How much to Feed Your Cat – CORRECT PORTIONS for a Healthy Cat!

Yes. Your cat needs as much wet food as dry food. Both kinds of foods are supplements to each other yet you may not be able to substitute one for another. Currently, many vets recommend the use of wet food mostly, for the reason that cats are carnivorous and they do not need a lot of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are synonymous with dry food.

Also, here are other benefits of feeding your cat with canned food

    • Water content

Water is the main ingredient in canned cat food. This means that canned food is closer to what your cat would eat in its normal natural environment. At the time when your cat murders and eats prey, the prey flesh contains the water necessary to meet the cats nutritional needs. This is not the case with dry food.

As cats have been adapted to get most of their water from the prey they hunt and eat, they are not acclimatized to drinking water from a bowl everywhere. Many cats do not get enough water if they eat dry feeds. This can lead to regular cat diseases, such as urinary tract disease, which often leads to kidney and liver problems.

    • Animal protein

Most canned cat foods contain significant amounts of animal protein, and this is usually the subsequent ingredient after water and before any starch. Canned cat food does not contain much sugar for the most part, while dry food sources generally contain a lot of sugar.

    • Digestion

So, these three reasons justify why your cat needs to be a friend to canned feeds.
