Discover The St Kitts Cruise Port
Our ship, the MSC Divina, arrived early in the morning. With only two cruise ships in port, it wasnt very busy. As Justin and I had planned an afternoon shore excursion, I woke up bright and early to explore while Justin caught a couple more hours of sleep.
Walking down the dock, I was immediately greeted by a bright, yellow building with flags and signs. One of them stated, Welcome to St. Kitts Home of the Brimstone Hill Fortress, the Gibraltar of the West Indies A UNESCO World Heritage Site. If visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites is up your alley , youll want to check out Brimstone Hill Fortress. Unfortunately, we didnt have the chance, but its one thing Id like to return to see.

Water Taxi: Cockleshell Bay To Oualie Beach
Water taxis motor boats that cross The Narrows in 10 to 15 minutes are operated by over half a dozen private companies on St. Kitts. Water taxis depart St. Kitts from Reggae Beach Pier at Cockleshell Bay, at the southeast tip of the island, and arrive on the north coast of Nevis at Oualie Beach. These water taxi services are more expensive than ferries, but faster and more flexible. Call in advance and arrange to leave at a time that suits your schedule. Your hotel front desk or concierge can help you make these arrangements.
It is possible to get to Nevis by air, but not from St. Kitts. If you’re bound for Nevis but a stop in St. Kitts is optional, consider the alternative of starting on one of the nearby islands: Antigua, Sint Maarten or Puerto Rico. All three have direct air connections to Nevis.
- Though Nevis has its own small regional airport, no flights connect it to St. Kitts.

Venture Out To The Beach
One of the most beautiful beaches Ive ever seen in the world is Cockleshell Beach in St. Kitts. We took an excursion with the cruise ship to visit Cockleshell Beach. Its possible to go there without an organized tour. In the port, it will be easy to find a taxi driver to take you there. Its approximately $28-30 for up to four people, one way.
On the way to Cockleshell Beach, youll be able to admire the beauty of the island from the vehicle. Theres a scenic outlook on the way where you can view the Caribbean Sea on one side of the road, and the Atlantic Ocean on the other from up high on a mountain.
Our excursion included transportation and lounger chairs to use, and you can also rent umbrellas. We preferred to soak up the sunshine!
If youre looking for another gorgeous beach thats closer to the port, check out South Friars Beach. Its about $4 per person to take a taxi there. It is a little bit more convenient to visit and also quite beautiful. However, due to its proximity to the port, it will likely be more crowded and I feel as though the view at Cockleshell Beach is more spectacular.

British traditions play an important part in the modern culture of the country, and most inhabitants are of African descent, having been brought in during the early colonial period. Without a doubt, a big part of the culture of St Kitts and Nevis is their national sport, cricket. Moko-Jumbies, Clowns, and masquerades make up a large part of St. Kitts folk culture, offering entertainment and an insight into a past documented by hundreds of years of celebrations. All in all, many carnivals on St. Kitts bring the islanders together to commemorate the mixture of the many customs and traditions that have shaped the islands heritage and background over many centuries.

How To Get There
Flights to St. Kitts and Nevis tend to be expensive, and the only airline offering daily nonstop service from the U.S. is American Airlines from its Miami hub. Other U.S. airlines offer less-frequent nonstop service, like Delta with Saturday-only flights from New York-JFK and Atlanta and United with Saturday-only flights from Newark .
Fares typically fall at just under $500 round-trip for a seat in basic economy, though there is some variability depending on dates. The good news is, award availability, particularly with American Airlines, is pretty spectacular.
From Miami, almost every day has at least two economy award seats and dates starting in April even have 12,500-mile Economy Web Special Awards available.
Booking tickets from Miami with British Airways Avios could be an even better deal itll cost you just 22,000 Avios round-trip in economy. We searched for pricing and availability for a week-long trip over most Florida school districts spring breaks for four passengers, and youd have to pony up almost $1,800 in cash just for the tickets alone, but with British Airways itll cost you just 88,000 miles plus about $200 in taxes and fees.
If youre not based in South Florida, booking with AAdvantage miles is probably the way to go, since BAs distance-based formula creeps in price. However, nonstop flights are extremely limited, so most of the saver-level awards connect through Miami again, with almost daily availability.
Healthcare In St Kitts And Nevis
The healthcare system is quite basic but there are hospitals on both St Kitts and Nevis for emergencies. It is strongly recommended to travel with insurance as anything serious may require a medical evacuation to the US.;
The hospitals will provide basic care which is free of charge but if an overnight stay is required then you will need to pay for treatment. There are a couple of private medical centers on the islands with international doctors which will treat minor injuries and ailments. You can get an appointment there within a few hours.

How Do I Get From St Kitts To Nevis
Together, the beautiful Caribbean islands of St. Kitts and Nevis combine to make the smallest country in the Western Hemisphere, but they are distinct destinations divided by a 1.9-mile channel called The Narrows. St. Kitts is the larger and livelier of the two, covering 65 square miles and shaped like a whale flicking its tail at the almost perfectly circular, sleepier isle of Nevis, which is about half its size. Both islands offer gorgeous beaches and share a rich history. St. Kitts boasts a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the circa-1690 Brimstone Hill Fortress; Nevis has orchid-filled botanical gardens and challenging hiking trails up its namesake volcanic peak. Those who want to get from St. Kitts to Nevis to experience the treasures of both can do so any day of the week via scheduled ferry service or chartered water taxi across The Narrows. It’s a scenic voyage and straightforward to arrange.

Ferry: Basseterre To Charlestown
Five ferries the Caribe Queen, Caribe Breeze, Caribe Surf, Mark Twain and Sea Hustler take cars and foot passengers from the ferry terminal in the capital of St. Kitts, Basseterre, to the capital and largest city on Nevis, Charlestown. The ride takes approximately 45 minutes, although in the unusual event of rough seas, it can take a little longer. These ferries run 10 times a day between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday to Thursdays, with an additional 9 p.m. departure on Fridays, and additional 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. ferries on Saturdays. Sunday service is limited, with two morning departures and three in the afternoon.
Purchase tickets from a kiosk at the dock, and pay a small port tax separately at another window. Round-trip tickets require you to pick a specific departure time for the return trip, so if you’d prefer to leave your return time flexible, opt for two singles instead.
