Sheridan Dog And Cat Shelter Transitioning Leadership

Black Dog Animal Rescue Wyoming

Antje AJ Evans will fill the role of director of the Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter upon the departure of the current director, Jill Moriarty.

Born in Germany, Evans came to the US as an accountant. Although Evans still enjoys working with numbers, she decided to leave the accounting trade behind and find a job working with animals. Evans turned in her resume with aspirations to work in the back, caring for the dogs and cats. Once Moriarty reviewed the resume, she approached Evans with another idea, to take the reins of the shelter operations as Moriartys eventual replacement.

Although she didnt aspire for such a position when she initially applied to the shelter, Evans has taken on the challenge and told listeners of Sheridan Medias Public Pulse program that she is learning the job and will strive everyday to take care of the shelter and the animals in their charge.

According to Evans, Moriarty has taught her a lot about the shelter and leading a nonprofit organization. The two of them work together very well, but Evans said theres still much to learn. Moriarty is unsure when she will eventually decide to resign her position but she is sure that she will continue working with the Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter as a volunteer.

Sheridan Dog And Cat Shelter Survives On Donations

Betty White, actress, philanthropist and animal lover would have celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday, Jan. 17. Unfortunately, the actress passed away at the age of 99, Dec. 31, 2021.

Her death caused a nation to mourn but inspired tens of thousands of people to donate to their local animal shelters in her honor under the Twitter hashtag #BettyWhiteChallenge. Donations are continuing to pour into zoos, animal charities and shelters and the Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter is no expedition to the trend.

We didnt do a Betty White Challenge because it was so close to our Christmas Season of Asking, Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter Executive Director Jill Moriarty told Sheridan Media. We honored Betty on our FB page to recognize her dedication to animals.

Although the shelter didnt ask people to give money in her honor, Moriarty said that didnt stop people from remembering the icon with donations.

Donations are still coming in so I dont have an exact dollar amount but I would say its currently at $1,550, Moriaty said.

Donations are critical to the operation and sustainability of the shelter, according to Moriarty.

Our budget for this fiscal year is $515,135. Our current with the City brings our government contributions to $126,500, Moriarty said. So any given year, roughly 75% of our budget relies on donations.

Now halfway through their fiscal year, Moriarty is expecting operations costs will increase by virtue of inflation and supply chain issues.

  • May 2019 I absolutely love this shelter. We all work hard to make sure the animals are happy and healthy until we can find them a forever home. We all love the animals and our jobs. It is an amazing place!!!

Why Should You Adopt

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.

Tips To Improve Your Adoption Experience

Hoot and Howl with the Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter and the Unleashed ...

Adoption processes vary drastically from organization to organization, but here are some general tips that apply in most instances. Note that we’ll use the term “shelters” here for simplicity but it includes all types of rescue organizations.

  • See an animal online that you’d like to meet? Call the shelter before your visit to make sure the animal is still available. This especially applies for puppies, which are adopted out quickly.
  • Usually, you’ll need to get some paperwork in order: a photo ID, vaccination/medical records for any pets you currently have, possibly your vet’s contact info and a couple of personal references, and proof you’re allowed to have a pet .
  • If you need to provide contact info for your vet, let your vet know ahead of time. Otherwise, they may not release your information.
  • Many shelters require your current dogs to meet adoptive dogs. Your current dogs need to be up-to-date on vaccinations.
  • Some shelters require you to schedule a home visit to ensure a suitable living environment for the new animal.
  • If you have any questions about adopting an animal feel free to contact the PetLists team!

Sheridan Dog And Cat Shelter Gains New Co

The Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter has gained a new co-director. Rachel McGee joins the team with her sights set upon the volunteer program at the shelter.

According to Dog and Cat Shelter Co-Director Jill Moriarty, her new colleague will work on the administrative side of the house while Moriarty continues to develop and oversee programs. McGee is also working to get volunteer numbers and hours back up this year. Due to COVID-19 concerns, the shelter cut back volunteer hours for the safety of the volunteers and the staff.

One program that the shelter is bringing back this year involves foster homes taking in a furry guest for the holidays.

The shelter is asking residents to open their hearts and their homes to foster either a dog or cat for the holiday season. While appearing on Sheridan Medias Public Pulse program, Moriarty told listeners about the program that was such a success in 2019 with hopes this year will yield the same results.

    J. Moriarty

The Dog and Cat Shelter will provide all the items and food needed to care for the holiday guest. Fosters only need to supply a warm home and companionship.

Due to a cat being surrendered suffering from ringworm, the shelter has been forced to dispose of all of their cat toys and scratching trees. The shelter is taking donations in the forms of these items as well as others.

Dog And Cat Shelter Director Thanks Volunteers

The Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter is a no kill shelter that operates primarily on donations and grants.

Full time staff maintain the care of the varied animals housed within the facility. From dogs and cats to gerbils and even fish, the staff are kept busy with feedings, adoptions, meetings and care.

But the shelter has other duties. And care for so many animals takes a staffing level that donations cannot provide. Thats where the volunteers come into play.

While appearing on Sheridan Medias Public Pulse program, shelter director AJ Evans thanked her volunteers that take time out of their lives to ensure that maintenance is done on the grounds and the building as well as ensure dogs are being walked and cats are being cuddled.

    AJ Evans

Evans has been director of the Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter since spring. In that time, she has learned from former director, Jill Moriarty, how to keep the shelter operations in running order. She has also seen the irreplaceable value of volunteers and used the program as an opportunity to show her gratitude and thank them publicly.

    Why Rescue A Shelter Dog

Because shelter dogs are full of love!

Is it because they know you saved them and love you harder for it?

I can’t say for certain, but yes.

Jokes aside, there are three things all shelter dogs need to thrive in their new home:

  • Love
    • Most Rescues are foster-based organizations that don’t have physical facilities.
    • They usually have websites and contact emails, but not all of them have phone numbers.
    • Because they don’t have a physical facility, you need to view animals in their foster network online, usually on their website but sometimes on their member pages on either PetFinder or Adopt-a-Pet.
    • If you see an animal you’d like to meet, contact the rescue using the process listed on their website or via email. They’ll help you through the application process and set up a time for you to meet the animal at the foster’s home.
    • Adopting from a rescue generally is the most expensive option here and takes the longest, but you get an animal that’s been cared for in a loving home environment and their foster can tell you a lot about their personality.

Pet Owners Should Be Aware Of The Following Basic Rules:

Dog, Cat Shelter Will be at Home Show Again Sheridan Media

The maximum number of dogs and cats that may be kept on premises is four, of which you may only have three dogs.

Dogs and cats are required to have current rabies vaccinations.

For nuisance wildlife removal contact Colorado Animal Control & Wildlife Removal.

Animals taken to the pound are taken to Foothills Animal Shelterlocated at 580 McIntyre Street Golden, CO, 80401.

For concerns regarding domestic animals, please contact your Neighborhood Services Officer or any of the Denver Metro area animal shelters.

Keep all food sources for wildlife picked up outdoors. This includes trash, dog food and cat food.

If you encounter a coyote, haze them: Make noise, lots of it. Throw rocks, sticks or anything you can find. Carry a stick, blow a whistle, make them unwelcome. A coyote could confuse you or your pet as prey. Be aware! Report the sighting, if you feel threatened.

One Box Can Spotlight: Sheridan Dog And Cat Shelter

    Image: Millie Wollney , Unsplash

For every meowbox sold, meowbox donates a can of cat food, or monetary equivalent to a shelter or rescue. This month, we donated to the Dog and Cat Shelter in Sheridan, WY.

The Dog and Cat Shelter of Sheridan, Wyoming had humble beginnings, operating out of a modest building for years after its opening in 1969. Eventually, what started as a project to help the areas animals turned into a pivotal part of the community, and the shelter grew into what it is today: a happy, enriching space with heated kennels, a playing area and catio for cats, and a staff of compassionate animal lovers.

Some of the shelters programs and services include low-cost spaying and neutering daily training for adoptable dogs pairing senior pets with senior citizens, and funding the veterinary bills designating certain shelter dogs to help veterans and housing the pets of people who have been hospitalized, incarcerated, or placed in care facilities.

The shelter vets potential adopters to ensure every animal finds the forever home that best suits them. There are currently a number of kitties in the shelters care who have been waiting to get adopted for over a year:
