Why Are Several Animals Mentioned And The Cat Never Had Any Consideration In The Bible

Dogs versus Cats in the Bible.

The animals that are mentioned were necessary for the worship. Those animals signify the sacrifices that they make human life easy. For example, the horses were used to pull the chariots, camels for trade.

Some animals symbolize their unique characteristics, such as Ostriches, known for their lack of sense, dogs being despised, and snakes were considered dangerous creators.

Like many other pieces of information are not possible to mention in a single book, the cat is also a word or creator which has not signified any special power in the early days.

They got ignored, and only popular animals got their name mentioned in the bible.

We need to accept that not every word found in the dictionary, such as a cat, would get the mention in the bible.

God often combined the general things in one category and prevented us from discrimination to the details found in nature. In the bible, you will find many cases where it is mentioned that Jesus did more healings than recorded in the bible.

Therefore, God chose not to add every animal that lived on the planet in the bible because they are so many. As a result, God decides to add them under one single category, Every living thing that moves on the earth.

What Does The Bible Say About Big Cats

When the Bible discusses animals, its usually in one of two contexts. One is determining which animals are clean and unclean in a religious context. Since people probably didnt eat cats at least, one hopes they didnt our feline friends are not really relevant here. Other than this, the Bible largely uses animals as metaphors or refers to notable encounters where animals must be fought or tamed.

Despite a notable dearth of domesticated Felis catus in the Bible, we do meet other members of the feline family quite frequently. Wildcats are mentioned in various places, although not really as individuals. The wildcat takes on more of an emblematic role, being used mainly to characterise areas of wilderness and desolation. This makes sense: most wildcats are not terribly well-disposed to human company, and tend to avoid our settlements. Y

ou probably didnt have to go very far from town in the Biblical Middle East to find yourself in an inhospitable wilderness. To be scrupulously accurate, the Biblical wildcat probably refers to the African wildcat , who is a little less hostile to people than her European cousin. The remains of these cats have been found in human settlements dating back to Neolithic times. Even so, they would probably have been associated with wild and remote areas.

What Was The Role Of Dogs In The Bible

If we read through the mentions I referenced in infographic above, there are some recurring themes when dogs are mentioned in the Bible.

  • Dogs were used for farming, herding, and hunting.
  • Some mentions seem to suggest that being violent to dogs was acceptable.
  • The word dog is commonly used as an insult or a reference to low status.
  • In the New Testament, being called a dog can mean you are evil.

Its not clear if dogs were kept as pets during Biblical times, or at least not in the way we would consider pets to be kept. Dogs are often mentioned as working animals, and there is also a suggestion that there were perceived negatively due to running wild in packs.

Why Are Cats Associated With The Devil And Evil

How Many Times Are Cats Mentioned In The Bible

The cat got its images due to the ignorance of some of the communities who started believing the cat is dangerous. This thought is to pass on through the generation, and still, many people believe the cats spread negative energy.

There is no connection between the cat and the devils force. In Egyptian culture, the cat was symbolized as the protector of evil.

Egyptian people used to believe if there is an evil force around, the cat will save them. Thats why families in Egypt used to have the cat with them.

The cat signifies the positive energy that keeps the evil force away from the people.

Even today, you can find the ancient product and art form used in the Egyptian culture uses the cat sculpture to showcase their thoughts and beliefs about the cat.

The culture still protects what they have taught from the ancient people. Cat statues were built to keep the evil force underground so they cannot come out.

Additionally, ancient people also thought that the cat could see the evil force and play with them.

Have you ever seen the kitten playing to something while they are in the home, which is invisible to our eye? If you are ignorant and lack scientific information about the cat, you may start thinking that the cat is playing with the evil force.

What Science Says About Dogs And Domestication

Ask the Pastor Why Aren’t Cats Mentioned in the Bible

Theres a fantastic article on the New York Times about research into where dogs came from and the history of canine domestication.

Scientists generally agree that there is good evidence that dogs were domesticated around 15,000 years ago. By 14,000 years ago, people were burying dogs, sometimes along with humans. But some biologists argue, based on DNA evidence and the shape of ancient skulls, that dog domestication occurred well over 30,000 years ago. And as to where the process occurred, researchers studying dog and wolf DNA most of it modern but some from ancient sources have argued in recent years that dogs originated in East Asia, Mongolia, Siberia, Europe and Africa.

Depending on your view on Biblical history, it could be that dogs were domesticated in Biblical times, or maybe they werent.

I will leave that one up to you.

The Traits Of A Lion Relative To God

How Many Times Are Cats Mentioned In The Bible

Although many passages in the Bible show the lion as a savage beast, preying on the weak and helpless, or as the devil stalking about like a lion, the traits of a lion more often depict the Lord God.

The lions characteristics are perfectly suitable to describe God. A lion portrays the strength and fierceness of a predator at the same time as the majesty of a King. A lions protectiveness over his prey is like that of God protecting His people from the devil and evil.

A lion commands fear, respect, adoration, and worship, as does our God.

What Dogs Are Mentioned In The Bible

Whilst dogs are mentioned multiple times in the Bible , there is only one breed that is specifically mentioned; and thats the greyhound in Proverbs 30:29-31.

With the greyhound being the only dog breed that is specifically mentioned in the Bible, you are probably wondering what the context was, and what the passage says. Heres the direct quote from the King James version.

There be three things which do well, yea, which are comely in going; a lion, which is strongest among beasts and turneth not away from any; A greyhound; A he-goat also.

The word greyhound is translated from the Hebrew phrase for girt in the loins. Does that mean is was an actual greyhound in the Bible ?

Well, perhaps not it was probably the closest the translators of the original Hebrew could get to.

Interestingly, there are other versions of the Bible where the greyhound character is instead described as a strutting rooster it stands to reason that the translators for King James probably didnt want to call him that!

Its also worth mentioning that the greyhound breed of dog was very popular in the court of King James when this version of the Bible was published. This dog breed was probably high on the list of breed the translators were familiar with.

And was it even a greyhound in King James day anyway?

    Perhaps not.

I read a post on a web forum from a person debating where it mentions greyhounds in the Bible, and he said this:
