Recent Studies For Cat Allergy Cures
For the first time ever, science is offering hope to cat-allergy sufferers everywhere. In just a few years, your options may extend beyond HEPA filters, asthma inhalers, allergy medications and avoidance.
Two studies have discovered different ways to tackle the problem at its root. The idea is to neutralize the feline allergen itself instead of trying to minimize a persons allergic response.

The allergy shots will be first administered weekly or twice per month, so that the cat’s body gets used to them. The allergens in the shots will be more diluted in the first shots, because more concentratedshots may cause a negative reaction. As the treatment progresses the injections will be more concentrated and the cat may get only one shot per month. Some cats will do well on one shot every six months.
The aim of the injections is to train the immune system not to trigger an allergic reaction when in contact with the allergens. The catshould build up immunity and the allergy symptoms should diminish. You may choose to get the desensitization shots at a vet clinic or you may learn how to administer the shots yourself.

A team of scientists from the Swiss firm HypoPet AG has developed a vaccine to combat the feline-produced protein Fel d 1, to which 10% of humans are allergic, according to their press release.
After analyzing data from four separate studies involving a total of 54 kitties, the antidote, called HypoCat, has already demonstrated its success.
Our HypoCat vaccine is able to produce high levels of antibodies in cats, writes Gary Jennings, CEO of HypoPet AG, in the statement. These antibodies can bind and neutralize the Fel d 1 allergen produced by the animals.
Researchers say they are pressing ahead with registration studies and discussions with European and US regulators to bring the drug to market, which would certainly change lives.
The vaccine would help those with cat allergies avoid typical reactions such as rashes, nasal congestion and irritated eyes, while also lowering their risk of exacerbating asthma or developing chronic respiratory issues.
Getting Shots For Cat Allergies
If you dont seem to be adjusting, you can also try getting shots to help your cat allergies.
These immunotherapy shots work on the same principle as exposure to a cat over time. The injections contain cat allergens starting in tiny doses that are gradually increased.
Youll get an allergy shot once or twice a week for about six months, with boosters every three years or so.

A Problem That Affects Millions
Cat allergies affect 10% to 20% of adults. More than 90% of them react to Fel d 1. About 5% of adults are allergic to dogs, but many substances are involved in those allergies. That makes modifying dogs a more complicated project. Researchers say allergies to furry animals are increasing.
Fel d 1 is produced in salivary, skin and anal glands of cats and is found in their tears. Cats spread it when they clean themselves. It winds up all over the house when they shed fur or dander. All cats make it, including hairless cats, although amounts vary by cat or even by day. Bruce Kornreich, director of the Cornell Feline Health Center, said there is evidence that uncastrated male cats make more of it than females or neutered males. There is no such thing as a hypoallergenic cat.
And, there is no way to totally escape Fel d 1. It rides on peoples clothes to work and school. Its everywhere, James Wedner, an allergist at Washington University in St. Louis, said. He once saw five allergy sufferers who worked in a brand new office building. None had cats. He tested the building for mold, cockroaches and mice and found nothing. Then he found incredibly high levels of Fel d 1. Other workers were bringing it in, he said.
Purina says its tests show its food is safe.

Flea allergy is the most common allergy in cats.
In spite of common belief, a normal cat experiences only minor skin irritation in response to fleabites. On the other hand, a cat with flea allergies has a severe reaction to even a single fleabite. This reaction is an allergic response to proteins or antigens present in the flea’s saliva. When a flea bites a cat to consume a blood meal, some of its saliva is injected into the skin. Just one fleabite may cause such intense itching that the cat may severely scratch or chew itself, leading to the removal of large amounts of hair. There will often be open sores or scabs on the skin, resulting in a secondary bacterial skin infection . The area most commonly involved is over the rump or base of the tail. In addition, the cat may have numerous small scabs around the head and neck. These scabs are often referred to as miliary dermatitis, a term that was coined because the scabs look like millet seeds .

Doctor, if you tell me to get rid of the cat, Im getting rid of my kids first, said the parent of one young patient with an allergy to the family pet. Sandra Gawchik, an allergist in Chester, Pennsylvania, knew they were only half-joking she had heard similar threats before. Another patient recounted being pushed out of the house by his wife and daughter over his cat allergy, saying they preferred the feline to him.
Sensitivity to pets is typically the second most prevalent allergy in any region, after pollen or mites, says Joaquin Sastre, an allergist at the Jiménez Díaz Foundation University Hospital in Madrid. Up to 30% of people show sensitivity to cats in some regions.
The effects can be limited to sniffles and sneezes for some people. For others, however, the allergy can prompt dangerous asthma attacks. A US study estimated that, among cat-sensitive people, 47% of emergency hospital visits could be attributed to feline exposure. And allergy is among the main reasons why owners send cats to shelters.
Small doses of cat allergens the major one being a small, sticky protein called Fel d 1 can help to build up tolerance over time. But treatments can cost US$8001,000 annually, require up to 100 injections over 35 years, and are not always permanent or wholly effective.

What makes matters worse is that you have this problem licked. Maybe it’s the lack of hair gel and a brush, but you seem to lick yourself quite often. This licking then spreads Fel d 1 all over your fur. Then, when you shed your fur, you effectively spread this protein everywhere you go. That’s what can make it so difficult for some humans to be around you.
I know, I know, you may not want humans around you. After all, they may dress you up like a sailor or watch you while you pee. But many humans do like being around you, even if you may be plotting their demise, as I have detailed previously for Forbes.

But no matter how long the protection will prove to last, some study participants are already enjoying the benefits, according to one of the clinics involved. Cheryl Bernstein of Bernstein Clinical Research Center in Cincinnati has one patient who even began volunteering at the ASPCA before her treatment had finished. The woman, who had been highly allergic to cats, volunteered to clean cages of some 250 cats while navigating her way through a sea of allergens.
When she told me she was going to do that I thought she was crazy, says Bernstein with a laugh. And she actually feels OK she feels that she can tolerate it.
While Nelson oversees the big trial, Larché is working in the laboratory, studying the mechanism behind Cat-SPIRE in order to learn more about how it works and to determine which patients will experience the greatest benefit.
Were looking for biomarkers of efficacy simple tests that could be done on patients blood that would tell us whether or not they are getting a clinical response, so we know early whether a patient is going to find this helpful or not, he says.
Larché is optimistic, pointing out that graphs of participants symptom scores at a two-year followup study looked almost identical to the one-year graphs. It looks stable, like its sort of locked in, he says. Patients in the current Phase 3 study will be followed for up to five years to gauge the drugs lasting effects.
