How To Draw A Realistic Cat Step By Step

Don't Miss

Simple Steps For Cat Drawings

1. Use reference photos.

You may have researched the anatomy of a cat, but youll still need to find some good reference photos. This helps you observe and mimic the body shape of a cat, even when its foreshortened. If you want to draw a realistic cat, use a photo for reference. But if you want to sketch a cartoon cat, look at art or illustrations to see how other artists have captured feline forms in a stylized way.

2. Sketch out the simple shapes.

After youve observed the reference images, draw the major shapes of the cat. Start with the cats head, and then move on to the body, front legs, hind legs, and tail. Its about breaking a subject matter down and building it back up in a meaningful way. And to achieve that, you need to simplify all that chaos, says Merien. For a cat, youre dealing with the fluffy fur and the perspective. So you need to build it back up in a way that your brain can understand.

When youve simplified the cats shape, you can get the gesture and positioning right without worrying about the complex details. Be sure to mark where the limbs and joints are, as well as the tail. Its not just about the individual shapes, its also about how those shapes connect to each other.

3. Finalize your line art.

4. Add detail and color.

Step 2: Constructing The Cats Head

In this second step, you are going to use another construction oval to represent the head of your drawing of a cat. The head oval should be much smaller than the body oval you drew in the last step, and it should be more steeply angled down to the right.

You want to place this head oval at the front of the cats body oval, but you do not want the two to touch or overlap.

Step 4: Shade In The Cats Fur

Now we need to move on to the fur and shadows. This particular cat has white fur around his neck with some beautiful spots and lines on its back and legs. Using H or 2H pencils, shade the lightest shadows around the face and neck.

Using the same H pencils , block in the shadow on the tail and shade the fur with small lines and strokes to create the furry texture.

The Cats Out Of The Bag

Theres a reason cat videos dominate the internet: people like cats. From their graceful movements to their adorable faces and sassy attitudes, cats make for interesting subjects. Drawing cats can help you improve your artistic skills and give you fun pieces to add to your portfolio. But before you can jump in and sketch a furry kitty, you need to observe the real thing. Thats right, before you draw cats, you need to watch cats.

Do your research.

Take a look at the anatomy of a cat before you start a drawing. Cats bodies arent proportioned like a dogs, and their muscle groups are different from those of humans. One of the important things to study and understand is the skeleton, especially the spine. Cats are very flexible, but they still have limitations. Its good to study the muscles and how they sit on the bones, says illustrator Jade Merien. You cant see the muscles, but you’re going to need to learn them, because thats going to dictate how the features and fur look. You need to have an understanding of whats going on underneath it all.

Step 1: Constructing The Cats Main Body

Savanna Williams: How to Draw Cat Bodies in Poses

If you have followed any of our other animal drawing tutorials, you will know that we always start by using construction lines. Construction lines are incredibly helpful for any artist, whether you are an accomplished artist or a beginner. Starting a drawing with construction shapes and lines is a great way to make sure your dimensions are perfect before you start adding details. For our cat drawing, we are going to begin with an elongated oval shape. Ideally, this oval should be slightly angled down towards the right.

The most important part of this first step is to make sure that your oval is in the center of your canvas. There are many other elements to the cat, including the head, tail, and legs, that you will draw in the next few steps and these need plenty of space.

Add The Final Touches

Remember any patterns will wrap around the body

If the cat you’re drawing has characteristic patterns on their fur, add these on top. Erase the more prominent sketch lines or turn off the sketch layers .

In this case I decided to draw stripes on my cat. Be careful how dark you draw features like stripes, as they can quickly overpower the whole drawing. Use subtle shading lines, and make sure to follow the forms of the cat’s body. Drawing fur patterns especially stripes can add a lot of depth to your sketch. However, if done incorrectly, it may unintentionally flatten the image.

Try to vary the length, width and shapes of your cats stripes. They usually get thicker on the tail, body and upper limbs and thinner around the head and lower paws. Last but not least add a little shadow under your cat’s paws to indicate the ground and you are done!

  • Four Cats With Traditional Style

The cats in the following tutorial include four vintage styles that we can easily do just with the use of some lines. Three of the guides are only cat face drawings, but in one of them, we will get the whole body.

    Final tips for drawing cats

Remember that these are just instructions; they are not a definitive guide on how to draw cats. Part of the process is practice. Also, if you find your style you can practice more fluently.

Try to get out of your comfort zone, look for new ideas and develop yourself as an artist. Observation is the best learning technique, so whenever you have a chance, look at cats directly.

Once you master the fundamental, experiment with other elements. Give emotion to your drawings; try different feelings, such as anger, happiness, and sadness. It is a challenge when it comes to animals.

Have special care on the base shape of the face. It isnt similar to that of humans.

Do not draw only one standing position; vary in the options to learn more about them. Cats are very elastic, so you will always have poses to choose from.

The spine of cats is also different from that of people. This goes from the neck to the tip of the tail. Also, it has a certain curvature.

The tail is the way cats show their feelings. The way you draws it will make the cat look sad or happy, distraught or angry. It is also a fundamental element in the balance of cats.

    Cat Drawing Lesson

The temptation, as with any subject, is to focus on drawing the details of a cat: its eyes, whiskers, fur or paws. But this will only slow you down in the early stages.

Instead, its better for you to consider the feline anatomy as a whole, just as you would if you were drawing a human. And just like the human body, cats can be simplified to a series of geometric shapes and sweeping lines.

Once youve got these essential forms in place, youll be able to add those all-important details far more effectively.

The good news is that you dont need to know every last joint, muscle and bone in a cats body to know how to draw one instead, follow our simple steps below, and youll be able to capture the essence of the animal with no trouble at all.

How To Draw A Realistic Cat: Step

    • Step 1: In the very first step for how to draw a cartoon cat, draw a round circle at the center of the white blank paper. Step 2: It is time to draw some triangle shapes. Let’s start it. In this step of mark a triangle shape on the left side. For real work

    • Step 1. Start drawing the cat by drawing its skeletonized shape (stick figure. You can draw the base of the body as an oval, the head as a circle, triangles for the ears, and stick-like limbs. Step 2. Now add some mass / form to the stick figure cat. Notice that the leg / thigh is now an ovaland the chest is now an oval too
    • Cat Eyes drawing – step 1. 1. Begin by sketching the first eye. First, draw a half circle. Draw a curved line across the top of it. Connect one end of the curved line to the circle using a short line, enclosing the pointed inner corner of the eye. Draw a few small lines at the opposite corner

Step 10: Draw The Fur Outline

Notice the direction that I have used for the little fur markings. Always create your fur in the direction of the underlying body.

Some strokes will be curved and others slightly more straight.

Tip: Fur on the face travels upwards and outwards from the nose and eyes. See this photograph for an example of a cat to gain a deeper understanding of the fur pattern.

At this stage, you can call your cat a completed outline drawing, or you can continue to add form by shading in the next step.

Step 8: Draw The Outline Curves On The Face Limbs And Body

In this step, you will add the outline to your entire cat. Press lightly as you travel around the shapes. Notice where you must draw inside the shape and where to draw outside the shape.

Tip: Keep the drawing you are copying from parallel to your drawing. Place your finger on the curve you are drawing so that you dont lose your place. Always look carefully at the drawing you are copying from before you draw your curve or angle.

You can only draw something well if you have seen it properly. Its not enough to just look at it. You must ask yourself what the curve or angle is really doing, then record it by drawing it onto your page.

Our brain can only remember one thing at a time when we are first drawing, so go slowly. Dont be tempted to make it up or you might become frustrated with your results.

Ask yourself, What direction is this curve traveling in? But dont say left or right. It takes too long to work out which is left and which is right.

Instead, name something in the room like a bookcase, door, or window. I call this the Artists Language. It really works give it a try!

Tip: Dont name the part you are drawing Ask yourself things about the shape. If its an angle you are drawing, ask yourself, How much of an angle is this, compared to the vertical or horizontal sides of my page, or center guidelines?

When you draw the nose, darken inside the nostrils and the shadow at the base of the nose. Add an upside-down Y shape for the mouth.

Step 6: Constructing The Cats Second Back Leg

For the second back leg, you are going to follow the same basic steps that you did for the first back leg. Start with another square U shape, but draw this one facing straight down rather than to the back. You want to make sure that the rear line of this U shape begins on the U shape of the other back leg, to capture the right perspective.

To finish this final back leg, you are going to use two short lines and an uneven circle. To capture the correct angle of the cats back leg, you want these two lines to be angled towards the front of the cats body. You also want to make sure that the uneven circle faces forwards.

At this stage of the how to draw a realistic cat tutorial, you should start to see the basic shape of your cat coming together, and it should look something like our example below.

Step 9: Fine Lining The Outline Of Your Cat Drawing

After all these steps using construction lines, it is finally time to put them to use and draw the final outline for your drawing of a cat. The best place to begin drawing your outline is at the head. Using the oval shape to help you, trace the ears and then flatten the top of the head slightly, before dipping down into the oval just a touch. You can then follow the bottom of the head curve, creating a slight bump for the nose. After you have outlined the chin, take the line straight across to meet the main body oval just below the front point.

You can follow the other construction lines pretty closely for the rest of the outline. For the cats tail, outline the construction line on either side. Do not be afraid of not sticking to the construction lines perfectly, a few bumps and curves will add texture and realism to your drawing of a cat.

You can use short hair-like strokes to complete some of the outlining to give the impression of fur. Along the belly in particular, you can make the furry lines a little longer. For added realism, draw a few curved lines to separate the toes in the paws.

Once you are happy with your outline, you can erase all the remaining construction lines.

    Step 4 Details Sketch

Move the the smaller details of the cat in this step.

Draw the pupils of the eyes. A cats pupils are basically vertical ovals with pointy ends so draw accordingly.

Next draw some division lines on the paws to indicate the individual toes. Keep in mind that the front paws in this example are slightly angled so as the toes turn away from the viewer they will become less visible. Draw the dividers accordingly with smaller division for the far toes.

The pack paws are angled as well but the paw on the left is facing more directly towards the viewer while the paw on the right is facing more sideways. For this reason one toe on the right-side leg will not be visible.
