Cat & Kitten Care : How to Tell Male Kittens From Female Kittens

For a male kitten, youll find a small hole near the base of the tail, but there will be a second rounded shape a bit further down than with female kittens. Because the anus and scrotum have a bit of space between them, there will be some fur between them. As a male kitten gets a bit older, their testes will grow larger and be easier to distinguish.

Male Vs Female Cats Their Differences And Similarities

Male vs Female Cats, now this is an interesting topic. I can already hear both sides!

They say men are from Mars and women are from Venus. Cats are from Uranus! It’s not a dirty joke.

In astrology, Uranus is associated with independence, thrill seeking, eccentricity, ingenuity and capriciousness with a tendency to chaos.

While there is some superficial difference between male and female cats, they are, at heart, all cat.

Still, if you’re deciding what kind of cat to bring into your home even a superficial difference may be enough to affect your decision.

Two males who are raised together will be attached at the hip. If you currently have an adult male, you should be able to bring in a male kitten without any trouble. Keep in mind, however, that there are some cats male and female who will not tolerate any others cats and need to be the only children.

At What Age Can You Tell A Kittens Gender

At birth, the kittens gender can be determined by feeling for the testicles of the cat. The testicles of male kittens descend into the scrotal sac a few weeks before the birth.

One can bring two fingers together in a pincer action and gently slide fingers below the scrotum area. If one can sense two smooth, ovoid, small testicles located side by side in the scrotal sac.

Often experts can feel only one testicle at a time, and it is tricky to feel the presence. So, it is possible to detect the testicles if one does the process carefully. The absence of a testicle automatically denotes that the kitten is a female.

When you examine both genders closely, there really isn’t a great deal of difference between the way the sexes behave, especially in neutered cats. However, an entire tomcat has strong natural urges to protect his territory and find a mate, which can result in behaviors considered anti-social by some.

How To Tell If My Cat Is Male Or Female How To Test It

The first step we must follow if we want know if a cat is male or female It is to turn it upside down to be able to observe the sexual organs. Ideally, the animals anus area is facing you so that you can examine its genitalia in detail.

In addition, we recommend that you take hygiene measures if the kitten was on the street and you still havent been able to clean it or, if you are not sure if it is sick or not and you will have to examine more children later. Thus, to avoid contagion both from the kitten to you or to other puppies as well as from you to the little one, it is better that you use disposable latex gloves and that before and after you use a hygienic solution such as hydroalcoholic gel, pvidone iodine solution or chlorhexidine.

If you wonder how to know if my cat is male or female You must first know what are the physical traits that differentiate them and, in addition, some traits of the personality and character of each sex so that it is easier for you to know if you live with a cat or a cat. When they are puppies of a few weeks it is more difficult to distinguish them with certainty, but it is not impossible, and after a month and a half its easier, since their genitals are fully developed and their behavior more defined.

Are Male Or Female Cats Better

Some owners report that cats are bitchier, while males provided they are neutered are peaceful clumsy dogs. It has not been proven whether there is any truth behind this cliché. The fact is that uncastrated males tend to stray and become less attached to their humans. With the rays of the first spring sun, male cats like to say goodbye to the week-long stalking of cats in the heat. They are also more aggressive and restless than castrated animals and usually mark their surroundings with the strongly-smelling male cat urine. Cats in heat also show typical behavior: They roll around on the floor, meowing, and also tend to run away. A castration therefore not only serves general animal welfare aspects but also makes life easier for female cats and male cats and less dangerous.

You just brought home a kitten that you intend to name Sam but your roommate tells you that you had better consider the name Samantha instead.

Determining the sex of a kitten is easy when you know what to look for.

Lift the kitten’s tail. The opening just under the tail is the anus. Below the anus is the genital opening which is round in males and is a vertical slit in females. In kittens of similar size, the distance between the anus and the genital opening is greater in the male than the female.

As the male kitten grows the testicles become more apparent.

The color of the kitten may suggest its gender. Almost all kittens of calico or tortishell color are females. More orange kittens are male than female although the association between color and sex is not as strong as in the calico/tortishell colored kitten.

To determine your kittens sex, raise their tail to observe the shape and position of the anus and genitalia.

    • Place the kitten on its front on a soft non-slip surface like a towel.
    • Lift up the kittens tail so that you can visually inspect the perineal area .
    • Both male and female kittens have two orifices in the perineal area. The top opening is the anus, and the lower opening is the genital opening: penis or the vulva . The key characteristic to note is the shape of the genital opening.

    Physical Characteristics Of Cats

It can be a bit difficult to differentiate the sex of our feline, especially if it is a puppy, but for this we must first look at some physical aspects. Next we are going to explain how to recognize a female cat.

Thus, physical characteristics that differentiate a cat of a cat are based on the appearance of its genitals. In fact, recognizing a female is easier because her anatomy is simpler, she only has anus and vulva:

    • Year: located below the birth of the tail.
    • The vulva: located under the anus, at an average distance of 1cm or less, that is, they are very close together. It is easy to recognize because it is a vertical groove or streak, as seen in the image.

Obviously, in cats that are a few weeks old, the smaller external genitalia can be seen and, sometimes, they can be confused with a male due to the fact that when they are small they have not yet developed barely. But really, when they are adults it is very easy to distinguish. In addition, in the case of a sterilized cat you will not observe anything different since the external part of her genitals is not altered.

How To Tell The Sex Of Kittens: The Basics

    I can

The first thing you need to know about how to tell the sex of kittens is that when you go about identifying their gender, you need to be gentle.

Dont disrupt the important bonding moments between your Momma cat and her babies during the first few weeks of life. Generally, youll want to stay mostly out of the way of your feline friends during this critical stage.

Remember, if you handle a kitten too much during the early weeks of life, the mother can sometimes abandon it and refuse to nurse it entirely. Although you might be keen to know the sex of your kittens, its best to wait until theyre at least 3 to 4 weeks old before you start handling them.

That means you shouldnt be looking to tell the sex of newborn kittens or even baby kittens.

Its not fair on them or the momma cat to disrupt them by trying to sex newborn kittens. Ideally you should wait at least 3-4 weeks after birth before you attempt to determine the gender of a kitten. And, at that point, again be sure that the mother cat is clearly comfortable that you are going to handle kittens before you do.

If you try to interact with a kitten and it seems either incredibly nervous or stand-offish, then its best to hold off until a later date. You can always start with a different member of the litter and come back to the one thats feeling shy.

How To Choose A New Cat Or Kitten

In the US, we have 69 million pet cats. Is there a perfect cat out there for you?

The key is to select a cat or kitten that will adapt well to your environment. Take into account whether you are single, have a family with children, a multi-cat household, or a house with both cats and other animals. Cats are well known for having personalities. Aside from temperament, there are also differences in size, body types, and hair lengths that should be factors in your decision. Researching breeds and learning about gender differences can help you make your choice.Choosing a breedThe hobby of breeding and showing cats is called “Cat Fancy.” The Cat Fanciers Association , which may be thought of as the cat equivalent of the American Kennel Club for dogs, officially recognize 39 breeds of cats. Whether or not you choose a purebred or mixed breed cat, the following characteristics, which are typified in breeds, can help you to zero in on the perfect pet for you. Think about these traits and refer to the CFA site for breed.

Choosing a genderEach gender has pros and cons associated with it.

    • Male cats tend to be much larger than females.
    • Males, or toms, can be friendlier than females.
    • Intact male cats “spray” to mark their territory and howl for females .
    • Female cats tend to be more reserved than males but are far less likely to spray.
    • Females tend to howl when they go into heat and can become pregnant before their first year talk to your vet about getting your female spayed.

Do Male And Female Cats Look Different

Male cats do tend to be larger, more muscular, and female cats tend to be smaller and daintier, but this is not a rule that always applies.

There are some sex-linked colour differences: nearly all tortoiseshell cats or calico cats are female, while around 70% of ginger cats are male. Tabby cats are equally likely to be male or female.

    What Is My Kitten’s Gender

Determining the sex of a cat can be difficult at times, especially if there is no other cat with which to compare the anatomy. So how can you tell if you have a Merlin or a Misty, a Rex or a Ruby? Here are a few steps to tell what your kitten’s gender is

If you’ve established a good relationship with the cat, pick him or her up and lift its tail. If the kitten isn’t responding well, you may want to solicit the assistance of a friend or family member. If the cat still isn’t lifting its tail, try scratching it where the lower back meets its tail most cats lift their tails if you do this to them.

Once the tail is up, you should have full view of the cat’s genitals and anus. A male will have a much greater distance between the genitals and anus than females ½ inch apart on a male kitten or over 1 inch apart on a male adult cat. Conversely, if the two are almost adjacent on a kitten or less than 1/2 inch apart on an adult, its a female.

How Do I Tell Whether Kittens Are Boys Or Girls

How to Tell Male Kittens From Female Kittens
This is one of those tasks that sounds like it should be really easy but actually it can be surprisingly hard! Until they begin puberty , male and female kittens are incredibly similar.

There are several different approaches that different people use to determine sex, and some are more reliable than others, so well have a look at all the common ways to distinguish the boys from the girls.

    Coat colour

This can sometimes give you a good indication but its not always reliable!

Tortoiseshell cats are almost always female the cat needs two X chromosomes to be a tortie or a calico . However, some chromosomal abnormalities and a condition called chimaerism can result in male torties, so dont rely on it!

Ginger tabbies are usually male but again, not always.

All the other common colours can be male or female.

    Facial features

When adult, tomcats tend to have a leaner, more muscular build, a broader face and a heavier skull.

However, these features are all driven by testosterone and are not present in kittens before puberty just as you wouldnt expect a young boy to have broad shoulders and a beard!

The facial features of male and female kittens are sufficiently similar that it isnt possible to use them to tell the sexes apart.

    Sex-linked behaviours

Some books suggest that urine spraying is an indicator that the kitten is a male however, although spraying is more common in adult tomcats, all cats will spray if theyre stressed, so this really isnt terribly useful.

  • Male cats that have not been neutered tend to be more aggressive than females and to have larger heads and thick skin. They like to roam, sometimes leaving for a few days at a time. They mark their territory by spraying it with strong-smelling urine.XResearch source
  • Female cats are less likely to spray their surroundings.
  • 3Watch for signs that the cat is in heat or is or has been pregnant. Female cats that have not been spayed will go into heat, a state of fertility that enables them to become pregnant, every 3-5 weeks during warm weather . Cats in heat display recognizable behaviors:
  • Making vocal sounds to attract males. The cat may sound like it is in pain or whining.
  • Moving the tail to the side to show genitalia or crouching into a receptive posture. The vulva may be secreting a clear discharge.
