Overall Is Purina Cat Chow Cat Food A Good Choice
Theres not a single food in the Purina Cat Chow family that emphasizes meat over plants or clearly-named meats over potentially-low value by-products.
With ingredient lists thick with corn, soy, wheat, and dyes, Purina Cat Chows original lineup tends to contain more plants and potential irritants than nourishing meat ingredients. While Purina Cat Chow Naturals poses as a healthier upgrade, its just as carbohydrate-heavy and just as species-inappropriate.
Overall, Purina Cat Chow is a tempting option if youre on a tight budget, but its not your only choice. Before you settle on this brand, consider Kirkland cat food or any of the products on our list of the best cheap cat foods on the market.

Things To Watch Out For
There arent many negatives about this food, but in the interest of completeness, lets look at a few points that slightly less than ideal.
It contains grains that arent a natural part of a cats diet and therefore offer little in the way of nutrition by themselves. Theyre often used to help form the kibble.

Which Types Of Cats Might Do Better With A Different Brand
Purina Cat Chow Naturals contains several corn ingredients, so some varieties may not be the best choice for overweight cats. The hairball with weight control formula as well as the grain-free is the better choice. Some cats may also prefer other foods flavor, so if your cat is finicky and refuses to eat, you will need to select another brand. If your cat has a medical condition, like a urinary tract infection, or a skin allergy, your vet might prescribe a special food to eat while the condition clears up. We recommend following your doctors instructions and returning to this brand when you are able.
Purina Cat Chow Naturals Cat Food Review
Are you concerned about the health risks involved in feeding your feline on low quality formulas? Just like humans, cats need to feed on formulas that support their overall health. Even so, a lot of cat food manufacturers are keen on manufacturing low quality formulas in an effort to save on the cost of production and to make quick money. However, there are a few cat food companies that go out of their way to ensure that they offer nothing but the most nutritious formulas because they care for your cats health. These are the types of formulas you should go for.
The Purina Company is amongst the many pet food companies. They offer the cat chow cat food brand which they say is specifically blended to meet your cats nutritional needs. This formula is claimed to contain high levels of protein from real chicken and whole grain ingredients. It is also said to have other healthy ingredients for the great health of your feline.

Is Purina Cat Chow A Good Cat Food
With the use of low-quality ingredients, below average protein, questionable fillers, and animal by-products, I would not recommend this food for your cat or kitten.
When considering the Purina Cat Chow Cat Food ingredients there are several types of fillers within the first 5 ingredients, which offer your cat little to nothing nutritionally and could be harmful. In addition to that there many low-quality grains, low animal protein content, by-products, and meals too high on list for most recipes. These recipes also contain corn gluten meal, ground yellow corn, soybean meal and soybean hulls which can cause problems in cats who suffer from food allergies.
Purina Cat Chows Naturals recipes contain both healthy and low quality ingredients. With that being said, its only redeeming quality is the use of real meat as the first ingredient.
Artificial Food Coloring Dyes
Our records indicate that Purina Cat Chow does use artificial food coloring dyes. More specifically, we’ve identified 3 artificial food dyes used by Purina Cat Chow.
Although these food dyes are classified as Generally Recognized As Safe by the FDA, we recommend avoiding them when possible.
According to the Center For Research In The Public Interest , there are many potential health risks associated with the consumption of artificial food coloring dyes.
Given that most pets consume the same products for prolonged periods of time, these concerns should be taken seriously. In general, we recommend pet owners avoid feeding products which contain artificial food coloring dyes.
For more information regarding the CSPI’s findings, read our artificial food coloring article.
Red 40 is the most widely used artificial dye in consumer goods. Studies have shown that red 40 may accelerate the appearance of immune-system tumors in mice, cause allergy-like reactions and trigger hyperactivity in children.
The following recipes contain red 40:
Blue 2 is an artificial dye which can increase the likelihood of tumors according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Like other dyes, blue 2 does not provide any nutritional value.

Other Harmful Ingredients To Look Out For
Wheat Most cat food brands that use wheat in their products will tell you that wheat is a grain used as a high-quality carbohydrate source in dry dog and cat foods and biscuits. They will tell you that it provides energy for daily activity, as well as processing characteristics for the food. And finally, they will tell you that the allergy risk associated with wheat is low. However, many experts not associated with the pet food industry will seemingly say the opposite. From them, youll hear that wheat and wheat by-product is a very common allergy for dogs and cats. Youll even find sources that claim wheat has also been linked to epileptic seizures and celiac diseases. Cats are not able to digest grains nearly as well as humans or dogs, so many cats may also experience digestion issues if given too much wheat. In general, wheat is considered to be a very low priced filler ingredient with essentially no nutritional value for cats. As the debate rages on, you be the judge.
Healthy Ingredients That Lack In This Formula
Vegetables This is a pretty generic ingredient and it can include virtually any vegetable. Because of this, we are unable to properly analyze this ingredient. However, since cats are obligate carnivores, they do not gain much of any nutritional benefit from vegetables. That being said, in nature, cats almost always consume the stomach contents of their prey which usually includes various fruits and vegetables. Its unfortunate this labeling is so generic as we are unable to vouch for the quality of the vegetables included.
Potatoes Potatoes provide a lot of carbs and unfortunately, cats do not digest carbs well and it can also lead to weight gain. This ingredient is becoming more popular in grain-free cat foods because while potatoes are not grains, they serve much the same purpose by acting as a non-nutritious filler. The good news is potatoes are complex carbs. These complex carbs are easier to digest than whole grains and also dont spike blood sugar levels like the simple carbs do. But, anyway you cut it carbs are carbs and cats dont need them. This is a rather non-nutritious ingredient.

Other Ingredients In This Formula
Wheat flour is a powder made from the grinding of wheat. It helps with the cooking process and also helps to increase the nutrient values of the food. However, cats do not digest wheat in the same way they digest other meat based products. Wheat does not provide much nutrition to cats and is considered a lower quality ingredient. Some cats have problems digesting wheat and others may experience allergic reactions to this ingredient. In lower quantities, this is considered to be a safe ingredient for cats, but it isnt considered to be a high quality or nutritious ingredient, either.
When you see fish listed as fish meal on an ingredients list, that means almost all of the moisture was removed from the fish prior to the cooking process. That means fish meal contains a much higher amount of protein as opposed to its whole fish counterpart. However, we arent pleased that this ingredient is an unnamed fish source. Fish meal can contain almost any type of fish, including fish waste products that are not used for human consumption purposes. Whenever we see an unnamed fish source, we get a little nervous about what may be included.
Animal liver flavor
An Overview Of The First Five Ingredients
Chicken meal is ground up chicken meat that has been carefully dried to a moisture level of 10%. The protein content is 65% and the fat level is 12%. Many pet owners feel that chicken is a superior ingredient to chicken meal. It would seem logical that feeding a pet a whole, non-rendered chicken would be good. However, whole chicken still contains its moisture content prior to cooking and since whole chicken consists of about 80% moisture, after the cooking process is over there isnt much left. With chicken meal, the moisture was removed prior to cooking. That means, chicken meal actually has a much higher protein percentage and provides far more beneficial nutrients to your cats than whole chicken. Meals consist of meat and skin, with or without the bones, but exclusive of feathers/hair, heads, feet, horns, entrails etc. and have the proper calcium/phosphorus ratio required for a balanced diet. Its also important to note the quality difference between chicken by-product meal and chicken meal. While we do take exception to chicken by-products, chicken meal is actually a very high quality and nutritious ingredient. We are happy to see this listed.
