Ear Mite Treatment In Dogs And Cats

How REVOLUTION PLUS Works to Protect Your Cat

For the treatment of ear mite infestations in dogs and cats, Revolution should be administered once as a single topical dose. A second monthly dose may be required in some dogs. Monthly use of Revolution will control any subsequent ear mite infestations. In the clinical field trials ears were not cleaned, and many animals still had debris in their ears after the second dose. Cleansing of the infested ears is recommended to remove the debris.

About Cheristin For Cats

Cheristin is the brand name for the drug spinetoram, which is approved for use in cats to kill adult fleas.

According to the manufacturer, a single dose of Cheristin for cats begins to kill adult fleas within 30 minutes, with a study showing 98-100% of fleas being killed within 12 hours.

Cheristin affects only adult fleas and does not have any direct action against any other life stages, including flea eggs and flea larvae. However, with continued monthly use, any newly hatching or developing fleas will continue to be killed, eventually eliminating a home infestation in addition to environmental measures.

Ear Mite Treatment And Control

In a well-controlled laboratory study, a single topical dose of REVOLUTION PLUS resulted in > 99% effectiveness against an existing Otodectes cynotis infestation at 30 days post treatment.

In a multi-center field study conducted in households with existing Otodectes cynotis infestations, 94.4% of cats in the group treated with REVOLUTION PLUS were negative for ear mites at Day 30.

Can Cheristin For Cats Be Used On Dogs

Cheristin is not intended for use in dogs, and dogs, in fact, appear to have a sensitivity to spinetoram.

Limited data is available for Cheristins use in pregnant animals and it was not tested in lactating animals, so it should be used very cautiously in pregnant or lactating queens.

If you have any concerns for potential toxicity, even if you think your kitty might have just licked some Cheristin off her fur and is having a bitter taste reaction, it is always best to contact your veterinarian, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, or Pet Poison Helpline for further advice.

How To Apply Cheristin For Cats

Revolution PLUS for Small Cats and Kittens 2.8

To apply Cheristin, the cap of the applicator vial must first be pressed down until a click is heard to indicate the vial has been punctured. The cap is then removed.

The fur over an area at the back of the neck, just in front of the shoulders should be selected and prepared. This ensures that a kitty cannot lick the product off of himself.

Placing the tube directly above the skin, squeeze the tube 2-4 times to ensure all product has been squeezed out.

The manufacturer states that a small amount of liquid may remain in the vial after application, which is normal.

Revolution Plus For Cats Dosage

Before purchasing Revolution Plus, find out how much your cat weighs so you can buy the correct dosage.

Revolution Plus is typically applied every 30 days for the best protection. Revolution Plus is approved for use in cats and kittens 8 weeks of age and older.

Revolution Plus comes in three sizes as a topical solution for cats weighing 2.8 to 5.5 pounds, 5.5 to 11.1 pounds, and 11.1 to 22 pounds. For cats that exceed 22 pounds, the manufacturer recommends using a second dose in combination as appropriate .

Safe use of Revolution Plus or any topical product for your kitty means always following all instructions on the packaging. Revolution Plus vials have a cap that first needs to be pushed down into the vial to puncture it.

The cap can then be removed, and the entire contents of the vial applied by parting the fur and applying to the skin along the back of the neck in front of the shoulders where a kitty cannot reach to lick it off of himself.

While Revolution Plus topical solution is considered to be waterproof within two hours of application, the manufacturer still recommends waiting 24 hours to bathe your kitty after application. Bathing shortly before application may also reduce its effectiveness.

If for some reason you are unsure if the product was administered correctly or whether all of it was applied, it is usually safest to not apply an additional dose.

Side Effects Of Cheristin For Cats

Like virtually all medications, Cheristin may cause certain side effects. The most commonly-reported side effects include hair loss, redness, and itchiness at the application site.

The most common side effects reported in cats include application site reactions, including hair loss, redness, or itching at the application site. Vomiting and inappetence were also less commonly reported.

Cheristin is not supposed to be ingested. Care needs to be taken with any topical product to apply it at the base of the neck, just in front of the shoulder blades, as this is an area a cat cannot reach to groom herself or lick the product off.

According to DVM360s article Toxicology Brief: The 10 most common toxicoses in cats this effect is typically not a true toxicity, but a sometimes dramatic reaction to the bitter taste. Providing milk or liquid from a tuna can help resolve the signs in short order.

In multiple cat households, kitty housemates should not be allowed to groom each other after Cheristin application until the product is dry. While no information is available for how long this takes specifically for Cheristin, it is commonly recommended to keep pets separated for 24 hours after application of a topical product.

Flea Control In Dogs And Cats

Flea Treatment for Cats!! How to Apply Revolution for Cats

For the prevention and control of flea infestations, Revolution should be administered at monthly intervals throughout the flea season, starting one month before fleas become active. In controlled laboratory studies > 98% of fleas were killed within 36 hours. Results of clinical field studies using Revolution monthly demonstrated > 90% control of flea infestations within 30 days of the first dose. Dogs and cats treated with Revolution, including those with pre-existing flea allergy dermatitis, showed improvement in clinical signs associated with fleas as a direct result of eliminating the fleas from the animals and their environment.

If the dog or cat is already infested with fleas when the first dose of Revolution is administered, adult fleas on the animal are killed and no viable fleas hatch from eggs after the first administration. However, an environmental infestation of fleas may persist for a short time after beginning treatment with Revolution because of the emergence of adult fleas from pupae.

What Does Revolution Plus Do For Cats

Revolution Plus has action against many common parasites. Revolution Plus does the following:

  • Kills adult fleas
  • Prevents flea eggs from hatching
  • Treats and controls two intestinal parasites
  • Treats and controls ear mite infestations
  • Prevents infection with mosquito-borne heartworms

According to the manufacturer, when newly applied, Revolution Plus can start killing fleas within 12 hours, with a majority killed within 24 hours. When already applied prior to flea exposure, Revolution can start killing fleas within six hours, with a majority killed at 12 hours.

In a couple of studies, Revolution Plus was found to kill fleas before they could lay eggs, preventing further infestations from starting if the product is used consistently.

The manufacturer states that in lab studies, Revolution Plus started to kill the black-legged/deer tick within 24 hours with a little over 90% effectiveness for one month. It also demonstrated over 90% effectiveness against the Gulf Coast tick and the American dog tick.

As a heartworm preventative, Revolution Plus was found to be 100% effective in preventing the development of heartworms in cats when those cats were exposed to larvae about 30 days prior.

Revolution products can also help to control ear mites, which are pesky, itchy pests that occupy the ear canals, usually of young cats or kittens. Revolution Plus was over 99% effective at eliminating this parasite.

When used properly, side effects to Revolution products for cats are uncommon. Both Revolution and Revolution Plus are labeled for cats 8 weeks of age and older. Revolution Plus is also restricted to cats weighing at least 2.8lb. Topical products like Revolution should never be ingested.

In clinical trials for Revolution, about 1% of cats were found to have a temporary hair loss at the application site, according to the manufacturer. Other signs seen in less than 0.5% of cats included digestive upset, poor appetite, drooling, an abnormally increased breathing rate, and muscle tremors.

In Revolution Plus, a little less than 5% of cats showed signs of looking excessively tired, less than 4% showed signs of skin irritation, and about 3% showed signs of a decreased appetite. No hair loss was documented with Revolution Plus.

At least some of the digestive upset and signs of excessive drooling or salivation may have occurred secondary to kitties licking the product off of themselves after application. About Revolution For Cats

Keep Your Cat Protected with REVOLUTION PLUS

The main ingredient found in Revolution products is selamectin. Selamectin is a topical avermectin antiparasiticide. Selamectin works by enhancing release of a neurotransmitter called GABA. In certain parasitic worms like roundworms and in arthropods like fleas, GABA inhibits nerve conduction. By enhancing GABA release, selamectin essentially causes paralysis and death of the parasites it targets.

Revolution spot-on products are applied to the surface of a small target area or spot of the skin, usually in front of the shoulders at the back of the neck.

It is important to note that while these pesky pests are affected by Revolution by coming in contact with the skin and dont have to actually bite a kitty to die, Revolution products for cats do not provide true repellency that would prevent fleas or ticks from coming in contact with a pet.

What Does Revolution For Cats Treat

The original Revolution for cats kills adult fleas and prevents flea eggs from hatching for one month, preventing and controlling flea infestations with continued use. It can also treat and control intestinal roundworm and hookworm infections, as well as ear mite infestations. It is labeled for prevention of mosquito-borne heartworm disease, but cannot be used to treat active heartworm disease.

Revolution Plus for cats has the same spectrum of coverage above, but the addition of sarolaner provides for the treatment and control of tick infestations caused by the black-legged/deer tick, Gulf Coast tick, and American dog tick.

Is Revolution The Best Flea Treatment For Cats

When compared to Revolution, Advantage and Frontline products have faster kill times for fleas. Advantage II and Frontline GOLD also more effectively treat the entire flea life cycle including not just eggs but larvae as well. For getting rid of an active flea infestation in your home, Frontline Plus, Frontline GOLD, or Advantage II are probably better choices.

However, Revolution does have advantages to consider. When choosing a product, always make sure to think about all risks present to your kitty. With a spectrum that includes not just fleas but heartworms, ticks, sarcoptic mite mange, ear mites, and a couple intestinal parasites, its fairly unmatched in terms of having a pretty broad spectrum of coverage.

Most pets are at risk from all of these critters, but there can be regional variation. If youre not sure what risks are more prevalent in your region, make sure to ask your veterinarian.
