About The Feline Calorie Calculator

The feline calorie calculator uses a basic formula to determine the resting energy requirements of  felines. The result is a good estimate of how many calories per day you should feed your cat in order to maintain body weight . To safely lose weight, it is recommended that you feed your cat 80% of their RER, which is shown in the calculator as Calorie Requirements for Weight Loss.

Neutered cats require fewer calories per day to maintain body weight than intact cats. Kittens also have a much higher calorie requirement. This is reflected in the results. See Pet Obesity Prevention for more details.

If you have any questions or recommendations for the calculator, you can get in touch here.

Feeding A Kitten Over 8 Weeks Of Age

Once a kitten has surpassed eight weeks of age, they should be fed twice a day with normal kitten food. Solid food should not be an issue for kittens of this age but they may still try to nurse on occasion. Between eight and ten weeks of age, a kitten should be fully weaned and preparing to leave its mother if you plan to find the kitten a new home. The first vaccinations are typically administered at about eight weeks of age, so when the kittens have a vet visit, you can be sure they have been growing appropriately.

Your Cats Dietary Needs Evolve Over Time

How Much Wet Food to Feed a Cat Every Day

As your cat moves through kittenhood, early adulthood, and beyond, his nutritional needs will change. Meeting those requirements at every phase of life sets the stage for good health.

Your first stop when choosing the right food for your cat? The nutritional adequacy statement.

Usually located on the back of the bag or can, this statement indicates whether or not the food is nutritionally complete and balanced for its intended life stage. The label will read, for example, formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO cat food nutrient profiles for all life stages.

Foods that arent nutritionally complete and balanced will usually be labeled for supplemental feeding only. These foods dont contain the appropriate balance of macronutrients and micronutrients and shouldnt be your cats sole source of nutrition.

While youre looking at the label, check out the feeding instructions as well. For the average house cat, the appropriate feeding instructions are usually already placed on the packaging of the cat food.

The nutritional guidelines on the package will point you in the right direction, though you may need to make some modifications to fit your cats exact needs.

Things To Avoid Feeding Your Kitten

There is a raw food hype going on with pet owners these days but please note that certain raw foods can be harmful to your kitten. Avoid the following:

  • Raw meat may contain dangerous amounts of bacteria and parasites.

  • Raw eggs could affect your kittens absorption of certain vitamins which will harm their coat.  Raw eggs also contain Salmonella.

  • Raw fish contrary to popular belief, kittens should stay away from raw fish. It may cause them to be deficient in a B vitamin which affects their appetite. Some cases of seizures, and even fatalities, have been reported to vets after kittens have eaten raw fish.

You wont need to give your kitten milk in fact, most kittens struggle to digest it after weaning and end up with runny tummies. Rather opt for giving your kitty an all-day access pass to a fresh bowl of water!

How Many Calories Do Bengal Cat Need Per Day

An adult male Bengal cat requires about 360 calories per day and a female Bengal cat requires about 270 calories per day.

A Bengal kitten requires more calories than an adult Bengal cat.

They require more calories for their fast growth and development.

The Bengal kittens require 100 calories per pound on a daily basis.

And it can go down up to 40 calories per pound per day when they get about 40 weeks old.

An adult Bengal cat requires about 25 to 30 calories per pound on a daily basis.

The male Bengal cats are about 10 to 15 pounds and females are between 8 to 10 pounds.

So, on average, a male Bengal cat requires about 350 calories per day whereas a female requires 270 calories per day.

What can I feed my Bengal cat?

How Should I Begin A Weight Loss Program For My Cat

Theoretically, weight loss seems simple enough: fewer calories in plus more calories out equals weight loss. Unfortunately, it is not as simple as that. You should never put an obese cat on a diet without veterinary supervision.

“If cats do not eat for as little as two consecutive days, they can develop a life-threatening form of liver disease known as hepatic lipidosis.”

The cat’s physiology is different than humans or dogs and if they do not eat for as little as two consecutive days, they can develop a life-threatening form of liver disease known as hepatic lipidosis . Your veterinarian will perform a physical examination of your cat, and will likely recommend some diagnostic testing to ensure that there are no underlying diseases or obstacles to weight loss for your cat.

How Many Calories Should Your Dog Or Cat Eat Daily

How Many Calories Should Your Dog Or Cat Eat Daily?

As you may already know, your pets nutrition is very important. You want to make sure that you are feeding your dog or cat the right amount of food each day to ensure that they remain healthy. Just like you when you are not eating right, your pet can feel sluggish and gain weight if his nutrition isnt properly maintained. So how do you know how much food your dog or cat should be eating everyday?

An dog that weighs 35 pounds and is fairly active needs about 1000 calories per day to keep his nutrition. And a 20 pound dog that is active needs about 650 calories per day. Do you know how many calories are in your dogs food? The average 1-cup serving of dry dog food has anywhere between 325 and 600 calories. Also, keep in mind all of the treats that you feed your dog. A simple dog bone has about 35-40 calories.

Now, lets talk about cats. You might always just make sure that there is food in your cats bowl. Cats do like to have dry and canned food, but if you do dry food only, always make sure her water bowl is filled. On average, 1-cup of cat food is equal to 300 calories and a 6 ounces of canned cat food is about 250 calories. If your cat weighs 8 pounds, he should be taking in about 240 calories per day to keep his nutrition. So, feeding a full 1-cup serving of dry does set him over the caloric intake for the day. Keep in mind serving sizes when filling up your cats bowl so as to not overfeed him.

How Much Should You Feed Your 4

At this stage, kittens still need about twice as many calories per pound than adult cats. Refer to the feeding guidelines on your kittens food to determine how much to give him per pound of bodyweight.

Kittens in this age group need around 30 calories per pound of body weight per day. For example, an 8-pound kitten should consume about 240 calories per day.

Make The Calories Count

As gentle as kittens appear, remember that they are carnivorous beings! These tiny hunters need to be fed a highly nutritious meat-based diet.

As a basic guide, if your kitten has a body weight of around 2 pounds, they should receive approximately 10 grams of crude protein and 4 grams of total fat.

Kittens have a higher requirement for protein than adult cats, and they draw a lot of their energy from it that treacherous laser dot isnt going to catch itself!

Essential fatty acids are also important for the development of your kittens nervous system, ability to learn, see, and maintain a healthy coat. Also look out for omega-6 that helps proper tissue functioning which relates to fat storage, liver and kidney health, as well as the development of muscles.

If youre treating your kitten, make sure that you factor in the calorie content of the treats every bit counts! Treats should make up less than 10% of your kittens total daily calorie intake.

Why Its Crucial To Calculate How Much Food To Feed A Cat

You might wonder why its important to determine the exact amount of wet cat food you should give your cat? As of 2017, an estimated 60 percent of cats in the US are classified as clinically overweight or obese. Thats about 56.5 million cats who are too heavy, and extra weight has a dramatic, negative effect on feline health.

Overweight cats are at an increased risk for congestive heart failure, skin disorders, infections, diabetes mellitus, complications associated with anesthesia and surgery, hepatic lipidosis , and some types of cancer.

Feeding cats wet food is never as simple as just opening up a can and letting them eat until theyre full. Indoor cats, in particular, tend to burn few calories throughout the day, and they become bored, which we all know can lead to excessive eating and weight gain. Pet parents need to take a strategic approach to measuring out cat food to prevent or deal with weight gain in cats.

How To Care For A Nursing Cat

How Many Calories Does A Cat Need

Aside from making sure that you are giving your nursing cat a complete and balanced canned kitten food formula,  you should also make sure that she is well-cared for by providing a comfortable and quiet place for her and the kittens.

These are some tips on how to care for your nursing cat:

  • Let the mama cat nurse the kittens for at least seven to nine weeks.
  • Use a milk replacement like homemade kitten formula if the mama cats milk is not enough.
  • Make sure that the mama cat and the kittens have a quiet and secluded place at your home.
  • Be sure to give flea treatments to the mama cat but not to the kittens.
  • If the mama cat decides to move her kittens,  just let her be but see to it that it is a safe area for them.
  • You should bring the mama cat to the vet a week after she has given birth. You should also bring the kittens so they will also be checked.  Aside from vaccinations, the mama cat should be dewormed to protect her and the kittens.

Kitten Feeding Schedule: How Much To Feed Your Growing Kitten

Adrienne Kruzer, BS, RVT, LVT, has worked with a variety of animals for over 15 years, including birds of prey, reptiles, and small mammals.

Editorial Process

Just like human babies, kittens do a lot of growing in the first year of their lives. The kind of food and how much a kitten consumes directly affects their growth rate and development. By making sure a kitten is on a proper feeding schedule, you’ll be able to monitor your kitten’s growth and ensure they are receiving appropriate nutrition.

What Are The Nutritional Requirements For A Growing Kitten

When choosing a diet for your growing kitten, it is important to understand three key nutrients: protein, fat, and calcium.

Protein

  • Protein requirements for growing kittens are high during the weaning stage, but the amount of protein they need will steadily decrease thereafter.
  • The recommended protein range for healthy kitten growth is 35-50% on a dry matter basis with at least 9% dry matter from an animal source. These levels support optimal growth, so it is not recommended to exceed them.
  • Nutritional formulations for adult cats should not be fed to growing kittens. Although the dry matter protein level may be adequate, other nutrients and energy content will not be balanced for optimal growth.

 Fat

  • Fat is a source of essential fatty acids. It is a concentrated source of energy and it carries fat-soluble vitamins.
  • Excessive energy intake is risky and can lead to obesity and developmental orthopedic disease. For this reason, the fat content for kittens should be rationed between 18-35% on a dry matter basis.

 Calcium

  • Kitten growth formulations should contain 0.8-1.6% calcium on a dry matter basis.

Once an appropriate nutritional product has been chosen, no additional vitamin or mineral supplements should be given. You should also avoid foods that produce a urinary pH of less than 6.2. Your veterinarian can help you determine the pH levels for kitten foods you are considering.

How Do I Switch From One Kitten Food To Another

Cats are often considered the epitome of the picky eater. But it doesnt have to be that way. Get your kitten started off on the right paw.

Continued

Its easier to switch foods if a kitten has been exposed early on to different textures and flavors, Larsen says. If exposed to the same food over and over, cats tend to get a fixed preference for a particular flavor and texture.

If youre trying to make a switch to a new kitten food, Larsen recommends not mixing it with the old food. If the kitten dislikes the new food, this can put them off the old food, too, she says. Instead, offer the new food and old foods in separate bowls. Over time, offer smaller and smaller amounts of the old food along with the new food. A little bit of hunger will help them make the transition – and resign them to at least trying the new food.

Remember that making rapid changes in food can cause stomach upset or hunger strikes. So you may need to make the transition to a new food over four to seven days.

How Much Food Should I Feed My Bengal Cat

How much food should I feed my Bengal cat? This is the question many people ask when they want to get a Bengal cat.

And in this article, I am going to answer the same question.

You should feed at least one can of food every day to your Bengal cat.

It may sound like a lot but this is how much food they actually required to maintain a good weight and stay healthy.

How Do Kittens Nutritional Needs Differ From Those Of Adult Cats

A kittens weight may double or even triple during the first few weeks of life. To support this explosive growth — as well as high activity levels — your kitten may have triple the energy needs of an adult cat.

These high energy needs make it harder for kittens to get enough calories in one meal, says Jennifer Larsen, DVM, PhD, nutritional consultant and assistant professor of clinical nutrition at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at the University of California, Davis. So most kittens want to eat at least three or four meals a day, she says. Its also a comfort thing — kittens are snackers at heart.

Kittens needs for fat, some fatty acids, and most vitamins are the same as for adult , Larsen says. But kittens have a higher requirement for protein, amino acids, and minerals, as well as for some vitamins. For example, kittens should get about 30% of their energy from protein.

For these reasons, most experts recommend you feed your kitten specially formulated kitten food until age 1. Although some cat foods are labeled as appropriate for kittens and cats of all life stages, these arent appropriate for your kitten unless feeding tests support the label claim.

And dont forget to provide plenty of fresh water — its a key to keeping cats of all ages healthy.

Whiskers Recommended Daily Amount

Whiskers recommend giving a 10-week kitten either:

  • 2 and a half pouches of , or
  • 1 and a half pouch of wet food and 25 grams of

Their wet pouches weigh 100 grams. So this means you should be giving your kitty :

  • 250 grams of wet food, or
  • 150 grams of wet food and 25 grams of dry.

From looking at the data, both Royal Canin and Whiskers recommend similar amounts, as youd expect. Its important to keep in mind that no two kittens are the same though. Different breeds, sizes, levels of activity, affect how much a kitten will eat.

If your 10-week old is eating a drastically different amount to whats recommended, thats when you have cause for concern and should check in with your vet. If they are within a sensible range, you have nothing to worry about!

When To Stop Feeding Kitten Food

Kittens grow fast and before you know it, youll need to switch to adult cat food. For most cats, this transition should happen around her first birthday.

Large breed cats like Maine Coons, however, take a little more time to mature. They may need to continue eating kitten food until between 18 months and 2 years of age.

Your kittens first year goes by fast, but ensuring she’s getting the right nutrients during this time will help support her in the years to come.

When Can Kittens Eat Dry Food & Wet Food

How Many Calories Should My Cat Eat In A Day

As kittens begin to wean, they can start to nibble solid foods. Starting with wet kitten food or moistened dry kibble will help through the transition.

Start by combining one part of warm water and three parts of dry or wet kitten food . Over the next two weeks, gradually decrease the amount of water and increase the amount of food.

Once your kitten is fully weaned and eating solids, choose whichever option is recommended by your veterinarian and works best for your situation.

Above all else, make sure the wet or dry food you choose is specifically formulated for kittens.

Feeding Wet Cat Food Vs Dry Cat Food

Most veterinarians recommend that cats eat primarily wet food. The higher water content in wet foods can help treat or prevent kidney and lower urinary tract disease as well as obesity and all its associated health problems. High quality wet foods like Fancy Feast Gourmet Naturals tend to contain more meat and protein and be lower in carbohydrates than dry foods and this better matches a cats nutritional needs in comparison to dry.

The chief benefits of dry foods are their lower cost and the fact that they are the best option when food needs to be left out for extended periods of time. If you choose to feed dry, opt for a quality, high protein cat food, like Solid Gold Indigo Moon with Chicken & Eggs Grain-Free High Protein Dry Cat Food, and try to maximize your cats water intake. If your cat likes to drink from running sources of water, consider purchasing a kitty water fountain like the Catit Flower Pet Fountain.

How Much To Feed A 5 Month Old Kitten

An average 5 month old kitten that weighs around 7 pounds will need to eat 334 calories a day until they are an adult. A smaller 5 month old kitten that weighs closer to 6 pounds will only need 297 calories a day. Otherwise, if your 5 month old kitten weighs 8 pounds then they would need 369 calories per day as they quickly approach their final adult weight.

Can Cats Eat Chocolate Cheerios

Ans. No cats should never be fed cheerios, as while normal cheerios arent poisonous to cats, several of the different cheerio flavours are. Chocolate cheerios of any kind are harmful to cats and should never be given to them. Chocolate is poisonous to cats because of an ingredient called theobromine, which is found in all types of chocolate. Dark chocolate and unsweetened baking chocolate are the most harmful, and cats who consume chocolate in any form may experience irregular cardiac rhythms, convulsions, tremors, and even death.

Measuring The Amount Of Food

Hungry kittens empty their feeding bowl without a care in the world so it’s essential that you measure the amount of food before serving. If cat parents just shove the food straight into the bowl then it’s only a matter of time before the felines experience stomach upsets.

Needless to say, a “handful ” is a rather inadequate measurement here due to the difference in size between the hands of people in the house. If you want to be precise, it’s strongly recommended that you use a food scale while measuring the amount of food in the bowl. Once you manage to get the amount right, you should put the food into a measuring cup and proceed to write down what you see.  From now on, you would be able to use the cup in order to quickly provide your kitten with enough food every day at mealtime.

Figure Out How Many Calories Your Kitten Needs

As a general rule, kittens should eat 2 tablespoons of kitten-specific formula per 4 ounces of body weight within a 24-hour period, Dr. Bales told The Dodo.

But kitten food can vary in terms of calories. So to find out exactly how much kitten food you should be feeding your specific kitten, you need to determine your kittens recommended caloric intake.

To do this, check out this kitten feeding chart from the World Small Animal Veterinary Association . Look up your kittens weight, and the chart will suggest a range of calories to feed him a day.

Then, follow the instructions on the label of the food youre using to find out how much wet or dry food that equates to.

So if your kitten weighs 5 and a half pounds, according to the chart, he should be eating about 180 to 190 calories a day which would equal one 5.5-ounce can of , for example.

As a general rule, kittens should gain about a half an ounce per day. Daily weight checks are encouraged, especially early on, so you can know if your kitten is eating enough or not. A food scale or neonatal scale can be used to weigh your kitten.

If you notice your kitten isnt gaining the weight that he should, start feeding him more frequently, Dr. Bales said, and contact your vet if you still have concerns.
