;These big differences in vision come from very small differences in anatomy. At the back of the eye, a layer called the retina collects light for the brain to turn into images of the world. The retina is made of up cells called rods and cones rods detect mostly dim light and motion, and cones detect mostly bright light and color. These cells play a significant role in how each species sees the world.

We all have some vague notion that cats can see pretty well in the dark.
However, most of us do not know just how well they can see in dark and other aspects of their vision such as their ability to recognize facial features, expressions, colors, shapes, etc.
This is actually quite a significant topic because the extent of cats sight affects how they act and interact with the world, and it even determines how they dream!
Below Ive tried to cover some basic aspects of cat sight so that you as cat lovers can have more insight about your cats relationship with the world and also with you.
The short answer is: Cats can see very well in the dark but cant see in complete darkness.
How Cats See In The Dark
When you really think about it, vision is such an interesting, mysterious thing. For example, the mantis shrimp has more color receptors than humans , which allows them to see a rainbow of colors that we cant even begin to imagine. Eagles can see four to five times further than humans . And, as were discovering here, while humans are prone to stumbling in the dark, cats have a much easier time navigating darkness than we do.
But why, exactly, is that? Why are cats so much better at seeing in the dark than we humans are?
There are a number of reasons why cats have better night vision than people, and most of them have to do with the structure of their eyes. Here are some of the reasons researchers think cats can see better in the dark.

The Edge Of Humans Vision
The human eye is an important organ of the human body, allowing us to interpret the things we see as objects, shapes, and colors. Our vision allows us to see in both dim light and bright light and is used in almost all the activities that we do. It is an essential tool for learning things around us, such as language, computers, health and active developmental activities.

Can Dogs Be Color Blind
There are three different kinds of color-blindness in humans, so it would make sense that dogs can similarly be color blind. Dogs eyes function similarly to colorblind humans . They mainly see blues, yellows, and grays, says Dr. Nelson. To a dog, an orange or red toy lying in green grass appears the same color as the grass. Dogs can better see a blue toy in green grass.

Cats’ fondness for pouncing on feet and feathery toys may be rooted in their hunting instinct, but it also has a lot to do with their unique vision. And, as it turns out, scientists know a lot about what cats see.
Now, a new set of images, by artist Nickolay Lamm, tries to capture the differences between cat vision and human vision. Whereas humans are able to see more vibrant colors during the day, their feline companions have the edge when it comes to peripheral vision and night vision.
Night creatures
Cats have a wider field of view about 200 degrees, compared with humans’ 180-degree view. Cats also have a greater range of peripheral vision, all the better to spot that mouse wriggling in the corner.
Cats are crepuscular, meaning they are active at dawn and dusk. That may be why they need such good night vision. Their eyes have six to eight times more rod cells, which are more sensitive to low light, than humans do.
In addition, cats’ elliptical eye shape and larger corneas and tapetum, a layer of tissue that may reflect light back to the retina, help gather more light as well. The tapetum may also shift the wavelengths of light that cats see, making prey or other objects silhouetted against a night sky more prominent, Kerry Ketring, a veterinarian with the All Animal Eye Clinic in Whitehall, Mich., wrote in an email.

All the rods in the feline retina make it sensitive to light, but this means there’s less room for cones. Cones are the eye’s color receptors. While some scientists believe cats, like humans, have three types of cones, their peak color sensitivity is different from ours. Human color peaks in red, green, and blue. Cats see a less saturated world, mostly in shades of blue-violet, greenish-yellow, and gray. It’s also blurry in the distance , like what a near-sighted person might see. While cats and dogs can detect motion better than you can at night, humans are 10 to 12 times better at tracking motion in bright light. Having a tapetum lucidum helps cats and dogs see at night, but in the daytime it actually reduces visual acuity, overwhelming the retina with light.

Can Cats See In The Dark
The short answer is not exactly. Where its been widely thought that cats have their own built-in set of night vision goggles, they actually require at least some level of light to see. However, they only need one-sixth of the amount of light that humans do and can see in very low light.
Cats wont be able to see in the dark, in the rare event that absolutely all light is blocked out, but their sight is much more advanced than that of humans for all of their night time adventures.
Why Do Cats Have Slit
The signature cat-eye shape is well-known in fashion and in nature but it has more uses than just aesthetics. The slit-shaped pupil, with its incredible light control, is how a cat can hunt in near-darkness, and also in bright daylight, says Dr. Nelson. In a study by the City University London, the slit-shaped pupil was most often found in animals that hunt by day and by night, and especially among predators that ambush their preyincluding cats, snakes, and crocodiles. Those that chase down their prey, like cheetahs and wolves, tended to have circular pupils.

The Power Of Whiskers
Cats have another tool to help them navigate in the darktheir whiskers. Whiskers are connected to nerves that are particularly sensitive to the slightest movement.3;Even a slight breeze can be detected. Cats walk with the whiskers pointing out and forward so when the whiskers brush against an object, the cat will know the object is there.4;This allows the cat to walk through tall grass or a toy-cluttered living room on the darkest of nights without running into objects they cant even see.
Do Cats Have Night Vision
Not surprisingly, cats can indeed see well at night. “Cats see better in the dark as compared to dogs and humans,” said Dr. Maureen Murithi, registered veterinarian and veterinary spokesperson of online pet resource SpiritDog Training. “This makes them natural nocturnal hunters.”
Dr. Rebecca Greenstein, BSc, DVM, and veterinary medical advisor for Rover, added that although cats can see well at night, they do need some level of light to do so. “In dim light, cats can actually see better than their human owners can – but they require at least a little bit of light in order to see effectively.”

Can Dogs See In The Dark
Cats are often thought of as the pets who see best in the dark. While thats true, dogs ability to see in the dark isnt too far off from cats.
Dogs eyes have many adaptations to make them able to see quite well in the dark. For example, dogs have larger pupils, which allow more light to pass through the eyes.
And while dogs may have fewer cones in their eyes than humans, they have more light-sensitive cells, called rods. The rods in dogs eyes work better in dimmer light than the cones that detect color.
The lens of dogs eyes is also closer to the retina than ours, which makes the image on the retina brighter, even in dimmer situations.
Dogs have an advantage to seeing in the dark because of a part of the eye called the tapetum. This part of the eye is like a mirror in the back of the eye that reflects light, giving the retina another chance to register the light and therefore the image that has entered the eye.
It is the tapetum that gives dogs and cats eyes that eerie glowing look in the night; its literally reflecting the light from the dogs surroundings.

A common belief is that cats can see in the dark. Its an easy rumor to believe, since many of us see our cats as magical creatures with extraordinary super powers. Unfortunately, its not entirely true and holding onto that belief can actually cause behavioral problems in your cat.

I say its not entirely true because, while cats cannot see in complete darkness, they can still see much better than we can;in semi-darkness. In fact, their ability to see at night is much better than most animals. Since cats are naturally nocturnal, their sharp eyes help them hunt and explore at night when the rest of the world is sleeping.

The good news is that you dont necessarily have to relocate your litter box from the closet or basement, as long as your cat is using it just fine during the day. It can be good enough to add a night light nearby to give her a little help in the dark.

How Cats See The World
Now you know the secrets behind cats night vision, you may be curious about how your feline friend actually sees the world. Luckily, in 2013 artist Nickolay Lamm published a series of images to demonstrate the differences between human and cat vision.
Interestingly, the images show us that while cats can see a lot more in their peripheral vision, they seem to have limited colour vision and see mostly in shades of blue and green, but red and pink appears to get confused. Additionally, colours are much less saturated and appear less rich than the way humans see the world.

Why Do Dogs’ Eyes Glow In The Dark
Youve no doubt seen that eerie, greenish-yellow glowing look of a dogs eyes when light hits them at night, such as from headlights or a flashlight, and in photos . What youre seeing comes from the tapetum.;
AKC Family Dog columnist Dr. Stanley Coren says, in Psychology Today, The shiny surface of the tapetum bounces any light that has not been caught by the photosensitive cells back up to the retina, thus giving the photoreceptors a second chance at catching the dim light entering the eye.
But the tapetum actually does even more: it amplifies that light through a phenomenon called fluorescence.
This not only adds to the lights brightness but it also slightly changes the color of the light that is reflected back, Coren says. The color shift moves the wavelength of the light closer to that to which the rods are most sensitive to and can best detect. And the tapetum reflects up to 130 times more light than the human eye. This is why dogs are five times more sensitive to light that we are.
Adding to dogs’ special ability to see in the dark is their increased field of vision: Most dog breeds have about 250 degrees of field of vision. Compare that to ours, which is about 190 degrees.

How Do Cats Dream
Yes, cats dream! And how they see the world affects the way they dream.
We have all seen our cat make funny movements while being sound asleep, like twitching their whiskers or frantically moving their paws. This does indeed show that your cat is dreaming at that moment. So cute!
During sleep, our brains process information and experience that we have acquired during our day. This is the same for cats. Again, just like us, cats dream during their REM sleep.
Quick refreshment: REM sleep is when our eyes move rapidly and our brain activity is similar to when we are awake. It is during REM sleep that we dream and this is the same for cats.
When cats dream, they most likely see things from their everyday experiences, just like us. They might be playing with their toys, running around the house or cuddling you.
Not every dream has to be a mirror of their experiences though. Cats can also have nightmares or see imagined scenarios based on their experiences. However, it is very unlikely that they will have the same concerns about things that we find stressful as humans like being naked in public or peeing our pants in a crowd.
All in all, cats dream very similarly to the way we dream. Their dreams are probably just a little less saturated and lacking in red hues!
