We Are Now Open To The Public
Almost Home is comprised of many dedicated and compassionate volunteers with the common goal of rescuing and re-homing unwanted and abandoned animals from private homes and municipal shelters and placing them into loving and responsible homes. Almost Home strives to help animals live better quality of lives while building a more humane community one family at a time.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
With so many positives came some negatives. Our intake and adoptions have increased tremendously but so has our rent and expenses. More dogs and cats means more vet bills. Our vet bills can be up to $6,000 a month alone. Please donate today, any amount will help towards keeping our doors open.
Special Needs Cats Sanctuary Hospice
We do not turn cats away due to age, medical need, or lack of adoptability. Almost Home is a safe haven for several older, chronically ill, or handicapped cats. These cats are able to live full and happy lives with medical care, adoration and the connection to life to which they are all worthy. Almost Home provides consoling care and a warm, loving environment for chronically or terminally ill cats to live out their lives in comfort.

Cook and Chef Bonded Brothers
These kittens are bonded, gentle and sweet. They love to play as kittens typically do, and of course they have their favorite toys. Their caregiver is greeted with tender love as soon as she steps back in the door. These boys love to be held and let you know it by purring up a storm. Cook and Chef enjoy looking out the window on their cat tree watching people and dogs pass by. When first rescued, they needed medical care and understandably were a little reserved by their new surroundings and the treatments they were administered to help them get better. It was a joy to watch their transition as they blossomed in their new world.
We rescued Cook and Chef from Chicago Animal Control. We treated Cook for severe conjunctivitis which had progressed due to non-treatment. He consequently lost a bit of his eyesight. But he has fully recovered and can see adequately out of both his eyes.

Why Volunteer At Almost Home
Almost Home Adoptions for rescued cats is a no-kill, cage-free, nonprofit rescue, adoption center, sanctuary and hospice. We do not receive government funding like the municipal shelters do. We rely on the generosity of private individuals for donations and, because we are volunteer-based, Almost Home depends on a very dedicated group of volunteers.
First and foremost, volunteers are responsible for cleaning the facility. Lots of litter boxes to scoop and clean, all walls, floors, etc, to be scrubbed daily, loads and loads of laundry, dishes and feedings all following process and procedures to provide a healthy and happy environment for the cats and kittens.
Additional responsibilities exist after the initial 6-month, 4-hour-per-week commitment is fulfilled Many of our volunteers have been with us for over 6 years, and a few even longer.
This isnt a come-in-and-pet-kitties thing to do. The cats need people they can trust and depend on. If you are one of the exceptional, dependable, hard-working and reliable people who take this volunteer opportunity seriously, then Almost Home is the place for you. We need people who really care and who want to help animals.
Running a rescue, adoption center, sanctuary, and hospice is lot of hard work. The feeling of making a difference for these cats and kittens, however, is indescribable.

THE MOVEMENT TO BURY PETS ALONGSIDE PEOPLE
The desire to be buried with a pet is nothing new. Eric Greene, a cultural anthropologist and the founder of the Green Pet-Burial Society, first realized that humans could be buried alongside their animal companions when he learned about a Natufian burial site from 10,000 BCE in what is now northern Israel. In it lay the skeleton of a woman on her side and with a puppys skeleton by her head, her hand gracefully resting atop his head, Greene remembers. READ ARTICLE

Ive Had A Very Sad And Painful Life
I was dumped at an overcrowded shelter down South. I was very, very sick and my skin was terribly infected, it hurt and burned so bad. I was sick to my stomach and it was hard to breathe. Thats because I also had heartworm disease, without treatment I would die. Sadly, the shelter put me on their euthanasia list.Almost Home saw my picture on a plea for help. The next thing I knew, a nice woman walked into my kennel. She had homemade food for me. I cuddled in her arms and she cried and told me everything is going to be alright. She took me out of my kennel, filled out some paperwork and said to me, you have no idea how wonderful your life is going to be!
Then I was in her car, on our way to Almost Home in Michigan! As we drove, I started to shiver and shake. She took my paw, hugged me, and wrapped me in a blanket I felt safe.
Im in the care of Almost Home now. BOY, LIFE IS GOOD!
Wont you please help Almost Home save more innocent animals like me?
Wishing you a Happy Holiday, Peace and Joy to you, your loved ones, and to the homeless animals whose future depends on all of us!
