As responsible pet parents, we have an obligation to care for our furry friends in sickness and in health. But as pet care costs rise, how do we do whats best for our pet? Here are a few tips to help you save money on your pets health care.

Schedule Regular Check-UpsDont skip your pets yearly exam. Its much more expensiveand riskyto treat illnesses than to protect against them. Its also a good idea to shop veterinary practices by comparing fees for preventative care.

Personalize Your Pets VaccinesSome vaccines are optional, while others are essential in preventing serious diseases. Never skip any shots required by local laws or mandatory for your pets protection, but do talk to your vet about personalizing your pets vaccine protocol.

Spay or Neuter Your PetSpaying or neutering your pet can save a lot of money by preventing serious health problems, including uterine, ovarian and testicular cancers. Many local shelters provide resources for low- or no-cost spay/neuter surgeries. Visit our online database to find a low-cost program in your area. If you live in New York City, check out our mobile clinics serving the five boroughs.

How Much Does It Cost To Neuter A Cat

Although the cost to neuter a cat varies, neutering usually costs a little less than a spay surgery. A random sampling of veterinarians showed the following prices: $122 in Ohio, $169 in West Virginia and $340 in Illinois.

As with spaying, neutering can also take place at a low-cost clinic or shelter and will usually cost less, around $30-50.

Keep in mind that there can be other costs associated with these procedures as well, from the cost of vaccinations beforehand to pre-surgery bloodwork to make sure your cat is in optimal health.

What Is Included In The Cost Of Spaying And Neutering

    Animal Services Department

As mentioned earlier, the full cost of a spay or neuter procedure varies depending on where you go. In general, the price for spaying or neutering typically covers the procedure itself as well as anesthesia. But every location will bill differently, and many charges associated with the surgery arent always included in the base price.

For example, the following may appear separately from the surgery on your bill:

    • Pain medication

    • A cat carrier or e-collar

    COVID-19 Update

During the on-going state of emergency in Ontario, the City of Ottawa Spay/Neuter Clinic will be open for surgeries, but with COVID-19 safety protocols in place. We want to ensure we can deliver the service safely for everyone. As well, given the higher than normal demand for service, it may take us longer to respond to requests, book appointments and perform surgeries.

For clients calling the Clinic and leaving a voicemail message, please note that all messages are being recorded and will be followed-up, so it will be unnecessary to call more than once.

If you have already submitted a request for surgery by phone or through the on-line surgery request form, you will be contacted in the order that requests were received. It may take us 6-8 weeks to contact you, but you will hear from us. Please also note that it may take up to 3-5 months before cat surgeries will be performed and it may take up to 6 months before dog surgeries will be performed. These timelines are subject to change depending on request volumes.

We will inform you of any other protocols or requirements when your pets surgery is scheduled.

Thank you for your assistance, patience and support as we endeavour to serve our clients as quickly as possible.

The City of Ottawa Spay/Neuter Clinic is a scent-free building, please refrain from wearing scented products in our workplace.

Will Neutering Make My Cat Fat

No, neutering your cat wont make them fat. However, afterwards, your cat may not need as many calories to maintain a healthy weight. Make sure your cat is fed an appropriate amount of a complete diet thats right for their life stage so they stay slim and healthy. In fact, you can buy special food for neutered cats, which have the correct balance of nutrients and calories for them. If youre concerned your cat is putting on weight after neutering, talk to your vet or vet nurse about the best ways to keep them an ideal body condition score.

How Much Does It Cost To Spay Or Neuter A Pet

To give you a better idea of the ranges you might encounter, here are a few examples of spay and neuter costs for dogs and cats throughout the U.S. They include low-cost options such as nonprofits and voucher programs.

    Spay/neuter base price for dogs

    Clinic/Vet
    $289 $225

What Are The Factors That Can Impact The Cost Of Spaying Or Neutering

Help Homeless Cats Today! Gifts Doubled!

Your pets age, weight, size, and existing conditions may impact the cost of their spay or neuter procedure. In fact, many vets and clinics charge different rates depending on the weight of the animal. And anything that may complicate the procedure will often incur its own fees as well. For example, if your male pet has a condition where a testicle has not descended, its a more complex surgery that will cost more.

Your dog or cats spay and neuter appointment might also include other preventative services that impact the cost. You may see the following listed as separate fees on your final bill:

    • Microchipping

    • Required vaccinations such as rabies

    • Flea, tick, and worm preventative medications

Its best to ask what is included in the quoted cost up front. That way youll be able to gauge whether or not the figure is accurate, and you can budget accordingly.

When To Have Your Cat Neutered

Most cats , can be neutered from 4 months old. Neutering at this age has many benefits, especially for female cats, however, its always important to discuss the decision with your vet because exact timings should be based on a number of different factors, including:

    • Weight: The risk of anaesthetic can be slightly higher in small kittens, so your vet may recommend waiting until your cat is a certain weight before they are neutered. Its also important they are healthy shape because overweight cats have a higher anaesthetic risk and more chance of complications during surgery.
    • Other health conditions: if your cat is suffering from another health condition it may change their ideal neutering time.

Should Female Cats Have A Litter Of Kittens Before Being Spayed

People used to think that female cats should have a litter of kittens before being spayed, but Corbett says theres no good reason for that. And if youre on the fence about spaying because youd like your children to experience kittens, he has an answer for that, too: become a foster family.

There are a lot of shelters that help moms and kittens and are able to provide that experience of raising kittens, Corbett says. But instead of adding more kittens to the world that need to find homes, youre helping homeless kittens.

A Cost Breakdown Of Some Common Veterinary Procedures That Can Seem Pricey

    Alex Ballingalltimerupdate

Ask veterinarians what they charge for their services, and youll get a litany of qualifiers before a firm figure comes up.

Theyre not necessarily hedging: While the cost of care for your kitty or pooch can be vary dramatically depending on where you go, some pricier veterinarians say people need to know exactly what theyre paying for.

Essentially, they say, their costs are higher because theyre providing superior service.

The list of what happens from start to finish is exceptional, and the care that people put into it, the love and attention, said Dr. Hazel Eaglesome, a veterinarian at the Blue Cross Animal Hospital on Danforth Ave. Were providing fully stocked hospitals for our patients.

One regular procedure that seems expensive is spaying and neutering. Toronto Animal Services offers discounted procedures for cats that are hundreds of dollars lower than some clinics. They dont do the same for dogs, because we do not have a homeless dog problem in Toronto, says spokesperson Tammy Robbinson.

Robbinson says city prices $40 for a cat neuter, $60 for a spay are cost-recovery, meaning that the city doesnt turn a profit for providing the service. She adds the city does not offer pre-anesthetic blood work, which tests the health of a pet before surgery, while many veterinary clinics do.

Prices are general estimates provided by Caplan, Eaglesome and Dr. Scott Bainbridge at the Dundas West Animal Hospital .
