Do Dachshunds Get Along With Cats

Don't Miss

What Dogs Do Dachshunds Get Along With

The dog breeds that can be most compatible with dachshunds are Dobermans, boxers, and some varieties of terrier. Given their suspicion, aggression, and clingy demeanor, dachshunds are more compatible with smaller breeds. But it all depends on the training your dachshund and other dogs have.

Are Dachshunds Good With Kids

Are Dachshunds good with children? Yes, in general,a well trained and socialized Dachshund can make an excellent companion for kids. They are affectionate, loyal, and playful. They can try to dominate a child sometimes so it is important they know they are not in charge.

It is absolutely crucial that the children are very gentle with their Dachshund friend. Kids tend to want to hug and pick up their dog. They must be taught the correct way to do this. Dachshunds are prone to back issues and a child could do harm if they are too rough with them. For more on Dachshund back issues see here.

The key is to introduce your kids and Dachshunds slowly and in the correct way.

Dapple Dachshunds Is A Social Dog

When they are properly trained and socialized, dapple Dachshunds can get along well with little children and pets.

Dapple Dachshunds make great companions for the right home or owner.

But is this the right dog to have with families with children and other pets?

While Dachshunds get along well with other dogs and especially other doxie dogs, they may not do well with smaller pets such as rodents, birds and reptiles. This is mainly due to the Dachshunds high prey drive and history as a hunting dog.

Dapple Dachshunds can get along well with cats and they may even make good companions for families with children, although they need to be properly trained and socialized at an early age.

Because of their hunting history and tendency to be territorial, experts suggest making sure Dachshunds are properly socialized in a variety of situations so they can grow up happy and healthy.

And of course, dont leave small children unsupervised with your Dapple Dachshund, as any dog can be prone to biting or nipping when frightened or in pain.

We also recommend that parents work with children on proper and appropriate ways to interact with dogs to ensure that playtime is safe and fun for all involved.

How To Cat Test A Dachshund

If you already have a Dachshund and you are thinking of getting a cat, then it is smart to cat test your dog.

Take your Dachshund to a friends house where a cat lives and see how your dog reacts to the cat. Is it constantly staring and growling at the cat? Is it barking at the cat?

Is it trying to attack the cat? If it is, these are tell-tale signs that perhaps your Dachshund isnt suited to live with a cat.

If your dog remains relatively calm, but just curious, this is a good sign!

What Is Littermate Syndrome

Dachshund And Cats

Littermate syndrome is where two puppy siblings become SO deeply bonded that noting else matters including their owners! Theyll be completely emotionally dependant on each other and get severe separation anxiety if theyre ever apart .

Theyll stop interacting with people and wont learn the basic training and obedience skills they need. This lack of socialisation and development leads to extreme fear of other people and dogs. As they reach maturity, littermates may fight or become aggressive towards each other. This can sometimes be so distressing that rehoming is the only option.

Food & Diet Requirements

These dogs do not have any particular dietary requirements. They are usually capable of thriving on just about any high-quality commercial dog food. As a breed, they are not prone to food allergies or diseases that must be controlled through diet. For this reason, most of them live well into their senior years without any serious dietary restrictions.

We recommend choosing food that contains plenty of meat in the ingredient list. It should be the first ingredient too. Generally, whole meat and meat meal are both preferable. Meat by-products are of lower quality in many cases. These dogs are not typically sensitive to grain, so you can choose a grain-inclusive dog food unless your puppy has an allergy.

Switch your dogs food often to keep their diet varied. This prevents them from developing a food allergy and ensures that theyre eating all the nutrients that they need. When you switch food often, you dont have to worry so much about nutritional gaps.

Are Dachshunds Good With Other Dogs

The dachshund is a very distinct breed that won the hearts of many people throughout the world. Furthermore, if you are a pet lover, you might want to own dachshunds with other animals in your home. Lets find out if the dachshund is a suitable breed for your household.

Coat Color And Grooming

The Smooth Dachshund’s coat is short and shiny. Single-colored Smooth Dachshunds often are red or cream, perhaps with some black hairs. Two-colored Smooth Dachshunds usually are black, chocolate, wild boar , gray or Isabella with tan or cream markings. Dappled Dachshunds have a dappled pattern in their coats, with light and dark colored areas in even distribution . Whereas dark eyes are required and little or no white hair on the chest is acceptable for solid- and parti-colored Dachshunds, partially or wholly blue eyes and a large amount of white hair on the chest both acceptable for the dappled Dachshunds. Other color patterns are brindle, in which there are dark stripes all over the body, and sable, where there is an overall dark overlay of hair.

Wirehaired Dachshunds have a very different coat from the Smooth Dachshunds. They have short, thick, hard hair on the topcoat with a softer undercoat. The hard topcoat hair is found everywhere on the body except for the jaw, eyebrows, and ears. While all the colors found in the Smooth Dachshund are acceptable for the Wirehair, the most common color is wild boar.

Longhaired Dachshunds have glistening, slightly wavy long hair which gives them an elegant appearance. They come in the same colors found in Smooth Dachshunds.

Longhaired Dachshunds must be brushed regularly to prevent mats from forming. They need to be bathed more often than the Smooth Dachshund, and you must blow-dry them afterward for their coat to look good.

Dapple Dachshunds Is A Short Dwarf Dog

Dapple Dachshunds all have a form of dwarfism caused by chondrodysplasia, responsible for their unique build.

Dachshunds were built specifically to dig and catch small animals, and the gene responsible for their short legs and distinctive body type is the same gene responsible for dwarfism. This gene is called chondrodysplasia, but is also known as canine dwarfism.

There is some controversy among breeders and experts regarding the continued selective breeding of dogs with chondrodysplasia, as it can lead to serious health concerns, spinal problems and chronic pain in dogs with the gene.

Still, the Dachshund is not the only breed that has been purposefully bred with this genetic mutation. Some of the other dog breeds that carry the chondrodysplasia gene include:

  • Beagles
  • The Sealyham Terrier
  • And the Cesky Terrier

Canine dwarfism, however, is not the only cause for concern when it comes to the overall health of the Dapple Dachshund. The fact that the Apple Dachshund has an dapple coat could also put it at great risk.

Can You Prevent Littermate Syndrome In Dachshunds

Although genetics is said to play a part, you can do things to help prevent littermate syndrome. The main thing is to treat each dachshund as an individual dog. While theyre still pups, work on separating them for part of the day. This means separate crates, one-on-one training, separate training and socialisation classes, separate trips to the vet, separate feeding areas, separate sleeping areas, and even walking them on their own occasionally too.

You just want to raise them as independent, well-socialised dachshunds. They need to learn how to cope on their own and that youre in charge of the pack. If theyre too bonded and distracted by each other, it can lead to unhealthy behaviours and cause serious issues with training, obedience and aggression.

The Best Medium To Large Dog Breeds For Cats

If you have the space for them, these larger dogs will make great playmates for your kitty:

  • Beagle: Beagles tend to be sociable and friendly toward people and pets alike. Although they might make a game of chasing your cat, they aren’t likely to cause them any harm. Beagles are sweet dogs who love to cuddle with anyone who’ll let them, but they also tend to be hyperactive. While they don’t bark much, they bay loudly, making them a poor choice for tight spaces but great for homes with big backyards.

Why Are Huskies Not Good With Cats

Siberian huskies have been trained to grow up with canine instincts. Their canine instincts cause them to lash out due to sudden movement, and this does not bode well for a cat at home. This is similar to other prey animals as well.

They have a predator instinct which makes them want to feel dominant over other small animals. Huskies want to show that they are the leaders of the pack. As a result, animals such as cats, rabbits, hamsters, and even fish could end up in your Huskys mouth if left unattended.

Dachshunds Are Prone To Obesity

Dachshund And Cats

The nickname sausage dog may be cute but your Dachshund should not actually look like one!

A Dachshund will ALWAYS tell you they are starving.

Its up to you to have the willpower to say no when theyve had enough treats and provide the proper quantity of food.

Obesity is rampant in Dachshunds and can exacerbate IVDD.

It can also bring on other serious medical conditions like diabetes.

Dachshunds at a proper weight should have a tuck behind their rib-cage and you should be able to see their waist when looking from the top.

If in doubt, check out this body conditioning chart.

Two of the most important factors in keeping your Dachshund at a healthy weight are to make sure they are getting enough regular exercise and portion control of their food .

What Should I Expect From Mydachshund As It Ages

As is the case with some breeds of dogs, purebred dachshunds tend toward certain ailments. Beyond working to maintainthe overall health of a dog as it ages, it is important to recognize that someconditions a dog experiences will detract from its calm demeanor.

This is especially the case when an aging dogfinds itself in unrelenting physical discomfort or loses certain physicalabilities.

Regarding illness and disabilities, it isimportant to note that dachshunds are known to be subject to severaldebilitating conditions that can conceivably impair its calmness. Dachshundsare prone to spinal column issues and, over time, this breed may suffer IVDD.

Let Them See Each Other

Is a good idea to use look-through barriers like a mesh net gate, so they can get used to each other presence. Also is very important that you donât neglect your dog while giving attention to the cat. This will make your dachshund jealous, if this happens it will be very difficult for your dog to accept the cat. If you are introducing a puppy to a cat, just do the same but in reverse.

Create A Positive Connection

Setting the right mood can help both pets get along and make a bond stronger.  After the initial first meetings have been done, they can start to spend more time in each others company.  These visits may be longer but should still be supervised for safety.

Positive connections come from positive experiences which can include:

  • Tandem Treat Sharing
  • Offering Affection While They are Together

These shared moments can calm emotions, create a loving bond while building on a lifelong friendship.

Do The Dachshunds Really Need A Companion Dog

We dachshunds simply love being around other family members. As such, if you only have one dog in the family that gets all the attention, think carefully about introducing another dog into the household. Why do you want another dog? Do you think your dachshund needs a doggy friend? Some owners might think that adding another dog to the family will help your dachshund manage his separation anxiety. Or maybe you saw an adorable rescue pup that you just have to bring home. All of these are great reasons for bringing home another dog, but before taking this step, think about what you might need to ensure that all the dogs in your household live together peacefully.

Most likely, your dachshund is not going to immediately welcome a new dog into the family. He might become annoyed and start a search and destroy mission for your shoes or dig the recently planted flowers in the yard while hunting for nonexistent badgers.

However, if you really have your heart set on adopting a second dog, then with patience and training, you can make the experience of introducing another dog into the family a delightful one.

Do Dachshunds Get Along With Other Animals

Heather C.

Dachshunds tend to be a very sociable and outgoing breed, and if properly raised and socialized, will generally get along well with other dogs and even cats. It is important to remember that dachshunds are a hunting breed and that if you intend to have cats, rabbits, rodents, pocket pets, etc., you should be sure that the dog is trained from an early age to get along with these types of pets.

To an unfamiliar dachshund, your new pet rabbit may be seen as hunting game and he will only be doing what is inherent in his nature to do, and that will be to take it upon himself to help you get rid of it! Keep these things in mind when considering a dachshund as a new addition to your home.  Most dachshunds would need to be raised with small animals or pocket pets to keep from treating them like squeaky toys.

Have A Backup Plan For Medical Expenses

The three most frequent medical issues Ive seen with Dachshunds are:

  • The need for back surgery, or expensive physical rehab, due to the IVDD mentioned above
  • Teeth cleaning and extractions
  • Bowel obstruction from eating things they shouldnt

Back surgery can easily cost $5,000 $7,000 and Ive known Dachshunds to need surgery more than once.

Depending on where you live in the country, and the extent of any dental disease, teeth cleaning costs can range from around $500 to $1,200 or more.

My Dachshund Chester needed surgery to remove a blockage twice.

The first time, the cost was around $2,000 but it was over $4,000 the second time due to complications.

The two best backup plans, in my opinion, are either to have an emergency fund of $5,000 to $10,000 set aside or to invest in good pet insurance.

That being said, dont immediately give up if your Dachshund needs back surgery and you cant afford it.

There may be other options besides putting your Dachshund down if you cant afford the cost of back surgery.

I know of several Dachshunds that have recovered with conservative treatment medication and strict crate rest alone.

Do Huskies Get Along With Cats

Across the globe, the Siberian Husky has become an incredibly popular dog breed. But what if you have a cat at home? Will the Husky get along with the cat? This is an important question to ask before you bring either a cat or a Husky home together.

Most Harnesses And Jackets You Find In The Pet Store Will Not Fit Your Dachshund

Harnesses are safer for Dachshunds than collars when walking because they help to project their fragile necks and backs.

Dachshunds are funny shaped so you will have a hard time finding harnesses and jackets that fit them properly.

Jackets that fit their deep chests may be too short to cover their back.

Jackets and harnesses long enough for them may drown them in fabric around the neck and chest.

Harnesses may not fit right because of the Dachshunds prominent breast bone.

The chest strap on my Dachshunds always slides off to the left or right.

Because the fit is a little off, the harness may put too much pressure on their delicate windpipe.

Can Dachshunds And Cats Get Along

People keeping asking the question can-dachshunds-and-cats-get-along?  although most dachshunds are the same size as cats, it doesnt necessarily mean they will always get along.

Dachshunds are quite stubborn and inquisitive by nature, which sometimes doesnt suit a cats introverted personality.

But the saying fighting like cats and dogs doesnt have to be that way when you introduce your canine to your feline.

Whether your dachshund and cat get along depends on their personalities, experiences and backgrounds.

If you get your dachshund when he was a puppy and your cat is already in the house, chances are he will play nice, as your puppy will accept that the cat is the boss.

However, if you are introducing an older dachshund to your cat, there are a few steps you should take to make sure that everyone lives happily ever after.

  • Give treats for good behaviour
  • Be patient
  • Take off your dachshunds lead
  • Do not leave them alone until you trust them 100%

Whether youre introducing a dachshund into your cats home or vice versa, this is what you need to do:

How To Keep A Cat From Attacking Your Dachshund

Whether its your cat or a neighbors cat that keeps attacking your dachshund, its not good for either animal.

Cats can bite and scratch dogs, which can lead to infections. Cats also tend to hiss a lot when they are feeling defensive.

If a dog constantly puts them on the defensive, they automatically hiss too because they know the dog will leave them alone after that and its a way for the cat to manage their stress.

You need to calm your cat down and make him feel more secure. Here are some ways to make sure a cat stops attacking your beloved Dachshund:

Manage the situation: if your canine is bothering your feline, chances are your feline will become irritated and attack your poor canine who is probably just looking to play.

When this happens, make sure you have an escape route for your cat so he has a safe place to run to and make sure your dachshund cant follow him.

When youre not around, its best to keep your cat and dachshund separate.

Reduce stress: Try to relieve your cats stress and tension. Some products like Feliway spray can help calm your cat or soft chews can also help relieve stress.

Direct your cats energy: sometimes cats like to tease and pounce on your dachshunds tail, especially if its a puppy.

When this happens, distract your cat with a game, perhaps with a piece of string or a ball. The cat will usually play with this and leave your dachshund alone.

If your cat hisses constantly, make a sudden noise or splash some water on your cat.

Methods On How To Introduce Your Dachshund And Cat Together

There are different ways in which you can introduce your Dachshund and cat to each other:

Allow them to meet face-to-face: This method is all about watching the body language of both the dog and cat.

Cats are rarely a threat to a dog, but it can be so the other way around. One person can keep the Dachshund on a lead and another person can hold the cat.

If the cat is not displaying signs of defensiveness, such as a raised back and hissing, then let the cat down to move around.

When your Dachshund is behaving calmly around the cat, you can let it down too and ask them to sit or lie while the cat sniffs around.

If the dog ignores the cat, praise and reward it. If your dog is too fixated on the cat, then try the desensitized method.

The desensitized method: This method is to try and reduce the reaction your Dachshund has to the cat by slowly desensitizing the dog.

Separate both pets and place them in rooms apart from each other with a baby gate across the door.

Make sure all their supplies are in the room with them such as their food, bed, litter box etc.

Let your dog briefly view the cat through the gate and then get the dog to focus on something else, such as a toy or a sound.

If your dog can focus their attention elsewhere, praise them. Let your dog view the cat several times throughout the day, but keep it short.

It may be surprising to those who own one thatdachshunds are actually the towardother dogs. Compared to other aggressive breeds, research has demonstrated thedachshund can be quite belligerent.

Compounding the seriousness of this, dachshunds do not seem to realize that they are comparatively small andtypically will not hesitate to go after much larger animals.

The good news is the owner can moderateaggressiveness, provided they are willing to devote time to introducing newdogs to the dachshund. Because this breed is strong-willed and can be difficultto train, some owners may find it best to have the help of a professional dogtrainer.

The younger the dog is, the easier it will beto train. The proverb, You cant teach an old dog new tricks, is not true. Itis simply easier to train dachshunds when they are young.

Because dachshunds are highly intelligent andcurious, you can train them throughout their life spans. Ideally, owners canuse their dogs curiosity to teach them how to react calmly to other dogs.
