Why Is Cat Urine So Hard To Get Out Of The Carpet

Cleaning up cat urine is notoriously tough. Its known for its distinctive and long-lasting odoran odor thats hard to eliminate and comes back even when you feel like you soaked and scrubbed. This specific and insidious odor is due to cat urines special composition.

Cat urine is extra-concentrated because of cats naturally low thirst drives. Even cats who are fed a moist diet wont consume enough water to really dilute their urine. This means the stuff that comes out is darker and stronger than human urine.

This strong-smelling urine has a full ingredient list, but three elements stand out as important odor-causing factors:

  • Urea
  • Bacteria
  • Uric acid

Lets take a closer look at these three elements and see how they cause odor and how theyll affect your choice in a carpet cleaner.

Avoid Products That Contain Ammonia

Most importantly, avoid any cleaning products that contain ammonia. Ammonia is one component of cat urine, and if cats smell that, theyre more likely to go there, Dr. Kornreich says.

In addition, ammonia and other chemical cleaners can often set the stainthe opposite of what youre trying to do.

Heres what you should do to help eliminate the smell of cat pee from a surface.

1. Blot the Spot to Absorb the Urine

Find the stain as soon as possible and blot up as much of the urine as you can with a clean cloth.

2. Rinse and Vacuum the Area

Next, rinse the area with clean water and remove the liquid with a wet/dry vacuum. You dont want to use a steam cleaner, as the heat can set the stain, Roberts said.

3. Soak the Spot in Enzyme Cleaner

While enzyme cleaners come in a spray bottle, spraying a light coat over the stain wont do much. Instead, remove the sprayer and douse the spot liberally.

4. Let It Sit Before Blotting With a Clean Cloth

Let the cleaner sit for 10-15 minutes and blot up as much of it as possible with a clean cloth.

5. Prevent Your Cat From Returning to the Spot

To keep your cat from returning to the spot during the cleaning process, place a piece of aluminum foil or an aluminum baking sheet over the area, or cover it with an upside-down laundry basket.

6. Reapply the Cleaner if Necessary

You may need to reapply the cleaner and let it dry again for older or particularly smelly stains.

Keep Your Cat From Urinating In That Spot In The Future

Once youve cleaned a particular area, prevent a recurrence by changing the significance of that area to your cat. In other words, since cats prefer to eat and eliminate in separate areas, place food bowls and treats in previously soiled areas, or play with your cat in that space and leave toys there.

Why Cats Pee Outside The Box

HOW TO GET RID OF CAT URINE SMELL

Litter box issues can be frustrating, especially when they result in a stinky cat pee smell. Most often, when your cat pees outside of their box its a sign that somethings amiss. According to the Humane Society of the United States, the most common reasons a cat stops using the litter box include:

  • Environmental factors such as a dirty litter box, upsetting noises, or a perceived threat from another cat in the household. A cat may be objecting to a new type of litter or having their litter box moved to a different location. Some cats hate change, and peeing is how they let you know.
  • Cats spray on vertical surfaces to leave their scent, especially if they havent been spayed or neutered. Some fixed cats will also mark. Marking is more common if your cat is having territory issues with a new cat or person in the house.
  • Medical issues. Inappropriate elimination could be signs that your cat has a urinary tract infection, blockage, kidney problems, or diabetes. It could also mean that the cat has arthritis, and a formerly easy-to-use litter box is now uncomfortable.
  • Stress/anxiety. If your cat feels anxious, they may pee outside the box to let you know.

If you suddenly find cat pee outside of the litter box, start by calling the vet. Urinary tract problems wont clear up on their own. Even if you suspect your cat is stressed out or marking, and its a behavioral issue, its important to rule out medical causes.

Does White Vinegar Neutralize Cat Urine

Why Cat Urine Is So Potent Although baking soda, vinegar, soap, and hydrogen peroxide may neutralize the odors temporarily, a humid day can cause the uric acid to recrystallize, and the infamous cat odor will return. The only way to destroy the uric acid is to use an enzyme cleaner, according to TheCatSite.com.

How Do I Stop My Cat From Peeing In The House

If your cat is peeing in the house, a visit to your vet to rule out a medical problem is always a good idea. Your vet will also ask questions about your cats home environment and behavior to see if this could be the source of the problem. Something as simple as a change in the type of kitty litter youve purchased, or moving the tray next to the noisy washing machine could be enough to discourage your cat from using their litter box. Remember, cats like a clean litter tray and there should be one tray available per cat, plus a spare, at all times. For cats that spray, your vet will often recommend spaying or neutering or the use of pheromone diffusers and sprays.

Eliminating Cat Smells: Prevention

Even though the methods outlined above can effectively remove smells, prevention is still the best with cat urine. Ensure that the litter box and its surrounding area are kept clean at all times, as cats will avoid an area if messy or unkempt. Also, check to ensure the cat isn’t suffering from an underlying health issue, especially if it had been litter-trained, and the behavior seems to have begun out of the blue. Also, avoid leaving physical products like shed hair, hairballs, and litter around. Keep areas your cat frequently visits clean always as having their smell on a place can keep attracting them there. Other things you can do to avoid cat smells include

Clean up urine as soon as it happens

Don’t wait whenever you find your cat peeing or having just peed in an area, clean it up immediately. Leaving the urine to stay there will only worsen the smell and make clean up and smell elimination harder later. Wipe down the area thoroughly with soapy water or water mixed with alcohol and dry with a vacuum cleaner or natural air. Repeat until the room or items are entirely free of the smell.

Air cat litter area and other frequently visited areas

Open the doors and windows to allow in the fresh air. Do these, especially after you clean the room to let in the fresh air and help the smell disappear entirely and the room fresh-smelling.

Look for commercial enzymatic cleaners that contain friendly microbes that can kill odor-causing bacteria in the urine.

You can also use some everyday household items to do the trick.

1. VinegarPour the pure vinegar in an empty spray bottle, do not dilute it water. Spray on the soiled area and let it dry naturally.

2. Hydrogen PeroxideDon’t apply the hydrogen peroxide directly on the affected surface. Dilute the antiseptic with water following the ratio of 70% water and 30% hydrogen peroxide.

Pour the mixture into a spray bottle, or you can dip a cloth in it and blot the surface. Rinse the area with fresh water and repeat the process if necessary.

3. Baking sodaSome people dont like the idea of applying vinegar on their carpets and clothing, and you dont have to.

Use baking soda to absorb the smell without having to spray any liquid cleaner.

Brush the area with a sponge or scrub to distribute the baking soda, allowing it to seep deeper and absorb the odor. Leave it for 24 hours.

Vacuum the area and clean off every last trace of the baking soda. Repeat the process until the odor is gone.

Regardless of the type of animal, you have for a pet you need to understand that all urines can pose certain health risks.

Again, pet urine odor becomes potentially hazardous when you leave it untreated for long periods of time.

Using a carpet cleaning machine is the best solution for how to get rid of the cat pee smell on carpet. Thats because it forces cleaning solutions deep into the carpet, and it sucks up all the water, cleaner, and urine.

If you dont have an upholstery cleaner, you can use the same enzyme cleaner we recommend for couches.

  • Blot any wet urine spots immediately with dry towels and continue blotting with new towels until they come away clean.
  • Spray the urine spot thoroughly with your homemade enzyme cleaner and cover it with a clean, damp cloth. You may need to cover the cloth with something heavy to help the cleaning solution soak into the carpet.
  • Let the enzyme solution dry overnight. If the carpet isnt dry, use towels to blot up excess moisture.

You may have to repeat the process to get rid of the stain and cat urine odor. For older stains or a deeply embedded urine smell, especially in carpets, it may be worth it to hire a professional carpet cleaning service to eliminate the odor once and for all.

Consider Your Cat’s Health

To avoid future incidents, it’s important that you address the problem with your cat. When cats urinate in places other than the litter box, it very often indicates a health or behavioral issue.

Begin by taking your cat to the vet. Aside from a dirty litter box, a urinary tract problem is the most common reason for litter box avoidance. It’s essential that you rule out a health problem first. If your vet rules out a medical cause, then you will need to address the behavioral reasons for your cat’s inappropriate urination.

Directions For Getting Rid Of Cat Urine Smell Outside:

For best results, use the product during cooler times of the day, such as dawn or dusk.

  • Clear the area. Shake the hose-end spray bottle of Simple Green Outdoor Odor Eliminator well. Keep pets out of the area during application.
  • Connect your hose. Point the nozzle away from your face and attach a hose to the back end of the sprayer.
  • Apply the cleaner. Turn on the water slowly and use low to moderate pressure. Push the safety tab toward the hose and turn the nozzle counterclockwise to the “On” position. Spray down the affected area.
  • Let the cleaner soak into the surface. Let the cleaner sit for 10 minutes to penetrate the smelly areas. Avoid letting it dry during this time, as the longer it stays damp, the longer bacteria have to digest the organic soils. In windy or warmer conditions, you may need to lightly mist the area you’re cleaning with more product to prevent quick evaporation.
  • Allow the area to dry. Repeat the process if necessary.
  • TIP: Applying this product at dusk allows it a longer time to stay damp and active. You can also lightly mist the treated area with water to reactivate and get additional deodorizing action.

Last Resort: Use Ozone To Get Rid Of Cat Pee Smell

What if your cat pees on a valuable item ? Most of these cant be soaked in baking soda, vinegar, or enzymatic cleaners. But dont freak out! Quickly remove as much of the urine as you can using plain water and gently blotting with paper towels or rags until the towel comes away clear. Let the item dry. If and when the cat pee smell returns, take the item to a dry cleaner that has an ozone room and ask them to ozone treat it.

When Bosco peed on my new Coach briefcase, I called the Coach company in tears. They advised me to soak the briefcase in water and a bit of Woolite to remove the spot and most of the urine and fill the briefcase with a few towels to keep its shape while it air-dried. The dried briefcase looked great but still stank of cat pee. I headed for the specialty dry cleaner and, after 24 hours in their ozone room, my briefcase came back absolutely scent-free.

Ozone may not be the solution for your wall-to-wall carpeting, couch, or hardwoods, but it can save expensive clothing and other valuables.
