As you can see when it comes to feeding newborn kittens you must consider their daily required calories based on their weight and age.

Miscalculating your kittens daily calories can lead to malnourishment, an increased amount of health problems, and even death.

Here are a couple of great tips to make sure that you are not missing a feeding and you are getting your newborn kitten the calories it needs every day.

  • Use a high-quality KMR : Do your research and find a really good kitten milk replacer that will give your kitten the calories, vitamins, and nutrients it needs to thrive.
  • Use the right amount of KMR for every single feeding: Based on the chart above and the bolded answer paragraph at the top of this post, you will know exactly how much to give your newborn kitten at every single feeding.
  • Set an alarm for every feeding so you do not miss any. This will require you to wake up in the middle of the night, comparable to having a newborn human. This is essential and REQUIRED to help your newborn kitten grow and be healthy.
  • If you live with someone else, simply take turns. As you would with a newborn infant, switch night shifts with someone else in your household. You can also take turns throughout the night too.

How Much Should A 12 Week Old Kitten Eat

These strapping youngsters are now fully weaned. How much should a 3 months old kitten eat? Well, as much as they want! They should continue to be fed 400 g of wet food three or four times per day and allowed to snack on kibble if they want. At this age, I would start to transition them off kitten food and onto adult cat food. This isnt completely necessary but it helps to ensure that they dont get hung up on eating kitten food when theyre older and their metabolisms have slowed down.

The most important consideration now is that the food is high in protein and, ideally, grain-free. Choose quality wet food with named animal ingredients . With adult food, I like to mash it a little with the tines of a fork so the chunks are the right size for tiny kitten mouths. You no longer need to dilute the food, although it is sometimes wise to do so in hot weather since cats are prone to dehydration.

At 12 weeks, I would also think about offering the kittens a water fountain. They may still be a little too small to use one but its never too early to get them used to the idea. Water fountains are great for cats and go a long way to offset their tendency not to drink enough.

What Are Some Best Practices For Proper Kitten Hygiene

Orphaned kittens require you to pay strict attention to their hygiene for optimal health and development. Follow these best practices for proper kitten hygiene:

  • bottles and nipples should be cleaned and then boiled in water to sterilize them between uses.
  • never prepare more milk replacer than can be used within 24 hours and always keep it refrigerated.
  • discard formula after 1 hour if left at room temperature.
  • once or twice each week, gently wash the kittens with a moist cloth.

Bottle Feeding A 3 Week Old Kitten

Kitten readers, again this will be along the same lines for right now. Hopefully you know how to bottle-feed at this point, but if you just want a refresher, listen in. Everyone else, do you know how to bottle feed a kitten?

This is by far the hardest part of caring for an orphaned kitten. At three weeks they are able to suckle a bottle on their own. In the previous section, I talked about how to prepare the bottle.

One call out that I do want to add is this. I know there are certain amounts they say your kitten needs every few hours. If they are a small underweight orphaned cat, use those guidelines as minimums.

If they are willing to eat more, let them. When I fostered my kitten, we would make double the sizing needed and make sure she ate at least half. Most of the time, she actually ate it all!

She was hungry and needed all those nutrients from the formula. She was so underweight that it took us a while to figure out that she needed to be gaining much faster than she was. Learn that lesson from us, you cant really over-feed a kitten when they are wanting the bottle.

So if your kitten suckles down that entire bottle, give her more. Dont make her starve until the next 4-5 hours. Especially if they are underweight and need to gain quickly. Or if they have not been gaining weight as they should.

Do Not Try To Overfeed Your Newborn Kitten

Kitten Feeding Schedule: How Much to Feed Your Growing Kitten

As kittens will be adjusting to the volume of milk that youre giving them every day. It may be okay to increase the amount of kitten milk replacer in order to reduce the number of feedings per day.

But please be very careful because exceeding the amount of milk in your newborn kittens feedings per day can most definitely cause some problems if not done correctly.

Overfeeding your newborn kitten can lead to multiple medical issues. Here are a few to look out for if you feel like you have accidentally overfed your newborn kitten:

  • Vomiting
  • Gas build up in the stomach and intestines
  • Aspiration
  • Diarrhea

It may seem desirable to overfeed your kitten before you go to sleep so that you can get some more shut-eye throughout the night.

Please dont do this.

A newborn kittens stomach can only take so much and you will be doing more harm than good.

Although kittens will stop feeding when they feel full. Even newborns! Do not try to force-feed your kitten even more than they are willing to drink.

What to Feed a Kitten at 3 Weeks Old

We keep dry food as recommended by our vet available at all times to our cat. He greatly prefers the wet food, and most weeks doesnt even touch the dry food. Still, I dont want to have to worry that Im not giving him enough, so I do have a feeder for Bob that always has dry food in it.

I dont think that a little dry food here and there is bad for cats, but I would always want to have raw meat, including organ meats, as the main part of their diet.

Should You Really Be Feeding Your Cat Milk

If you were a cat lady early in life, youve likely watched The Aristocats a few times. Okay, a few hundred times. And in all your nightly viewings of this cat lady classic, you may recall the fictional cream-based dish, Crème de la crème à la Edgar, given to Duchess and kittens by the scheming butler, Edgar himself. Ever since then, I always had this vision in my head of happy, eager kitties scurrying towards their milky feast with delight. Sure, cats seem to love it, but I never really stopped to ask myself should cats really be drinking milk?

Continue to give your kitten 400-500 g of good quality wet food per day, although if your kittens come from a naturally hefty breed they may need more. Its a good idea to check the nutritional advice on the packet to see what the manufacturers recommend. The better quality brands often have a chart suggesting how much a cat should be fed per unit of body-weight, adjusted for the cats age. This will help you adjust their diet as they grow out of kitten-hood and their caloric needs decrease.

At ten months old, your kittens are very nearly cats. They are probably at around 80 or 90 per cent of their full adult size, although some breeds will carry on growing for another two or even three years. This is sometimes the awkward teen stage of a kittens development, with considerable lengthening of the bones but not enough commensurate muscle growth to prevent them from looking gangling and lanky. Male kittens from large breeds are especially prone to this. As long as your awkward teens are still hitting their milestones, dont be concerned they will outgrow this stage just like human teenagers do.
