How Much WATER Should a CAT Drink

Some owners ask Why does my cat drink out of the toilet? Pets love freshwater, so if you change the contents of the bowl once a week, do not expect your feline friends to be an eager drinker.

You can either use tap or filtered non-boiled water. Replace it at least once a day and dont forget to clean the bowl regularly. If you notice a strange odor from it change the contents.

Why Water Is Important

Water is a critically important part of normal daily life and health. The body needs water for many reasons:

  • Water enables the moisturising of air as it enters the body through the nose and mouth
  • Water allows the continual hydration of internal and external body surfaces
  • Water is a key part of the composition of the blood as it flows around the body carrying nutrients and removing waste products at a cellular level
  • Water is a key ingredient of faeces and urine as it removes waste products from the body
  • Water is an essential part of many biochemical reactions all around the body, all the time

How Much Water Should A Cat Drink Per Day

The intake of water considered normal in a domestic cat is 45 ml/kg/day or around 2-4 ounces/day, an increase in this amount will also produce an increase in excreted urine, so if a cat urinates too much, probably water consumption has also gone up. Since this sign is often the first symptom perceived by the animal’s tutor, the veterinarian can choose to perform a series of laboratory tests to examine the cat’s urine and calculate the difference between water intake and the amount excreted in order to achieve a better diagnosis and prescribe the correct treatment. Some procedures sometimes require sedation and the passage of a catheter through the urethral duct, so only a specialist is able to perform them.

Treatment Of Dehydration In Cats

If you believe your cat is dehydrated, encourage them to take in more water . If their dehydration is mild and their kidneys, intestines, and other organs are working normally, then the additional water they take in orally may be enough to help correct the problem. However, if their dehydration is more advanced, or if theyve got underlying disease or dysfunction with one or more of their body systems, then its time for a vet visit. Your vet can determine how dehydrated your cat is and help you get to the bottom of it.

They can also give your cat fluids a balanced electrolyte solution. Dehydration isnt just about an abnormality of water balance, as there are typically electrolyte imbalances, too. Fluids may be administered either subcutaneously or intravenously , depending on how dehydrated and sick your cat is.

Is Your Cat Drinking More Because Of Kidney Disease

Your cats kidneys do two things: filter waste from the body, and concentrate the urine when your cat needs to retain water . Historically, the domestic cat evolved from animals in dry areas, such as Egypt. Due to this ancestry, and the frequent need to retain water in hot, arid climates, a cats kidneys work very efficiently. However, this also leaves them vulnerable if they do develop kidney problems. Given that the kidneys naturally deteriorate with age, older cats can often suffer from kidney disease and chronic kidney failure.

Water Needs Depends On Diet

Cats’ body tissues consist of about 67 percent water. Coincidentally, that is approximately the percentage of water in the prey they catch and eat in the wild. In contrast, dry cat food contains around 10 percent water and canned cat food has at least a 75 percent moisture content, making it a good source of water. Therefore, a cat on an all-dry food diet would require more supplemental drinking water than a cat on an exclusive raw or canned food diet. Likewise, a cat on a combination of dry and canned cat food also needs more drinking water.

Dr. Jennifer Coates, in an article for PetMd.com, created a formula suggesting that a 10-pound adult cat on a dry food diet needs about a cup of water a day. The same cat on a canned diet needs about a two-thirds cup of water daily.

Medial Issues That May Cause Your Cat To Drink More

There are several health problems that can make your cat drink more than usual. These can include:

  • Kidney disease: this is most common in older cats but can also affect younger cats. This issue is caused by kidneys that are no longer functioning as normal. This leads to increased urination and causes the cat to become thirstier than normal. Treatment involves management of the progression of this disease. Treatment may include a kidney-safe diet, antacids, treatment of high blood pressure and other issues.
  • Hyperthyroidism: this is caused by the thyroid gland, which begins producing too much thyroid hormone. This condition is most common in cats that are in their middle years or older. Treatment involves giving the cat oral medicines or radioactive iodine treatments.
  • UTI : is usually caused by a bacterial infection of the bladder and/or other parts of the urinary tract. These are common in cats of all ages, though it does tend females more than male cats. A UTI is usually treated with a round of antibiotics, though a cat may require subcutaneous injections of fluid under the skin if shes become dehydrated.

So, if your fur baby is showing signs of any of these medical conditions, along with drinking more water than normal, then its definitely time to call the vet.

Speaking Of Bacteria Is It Ok To Let Your Dog Drink From The Toilet

The age-old question besides being a little gross, you might be wondering, is it ok to let your cat or dog drink out of the toilet? Well, we asked our Veterinarians for you.

The answer is, if your pet takes a sip from the porcelain throne, its probably not going to lead to any major health issues as long as there is no waste or cleaners within the bowl or water. However, because even visibly clean toilets can harbor organisms , its best to prevent or discourage drinking from the toilet.

An easy solution? Put the toilet seat and cover down. If you have any cleaners or additives DO NOT allow your pet to have access to that water.

Keep their water bowl fresh, clean, and accessible and your pets will be less likely to seek out the toilet bowl as a watering hole.

How Much Water Should My Cat Drink Each Day

We adopted our female cat last month from Cats Protection, she has wet food for all her meals and is quite a hungry girl! We think shes a year-and-a-half old and shes an indoor cat. Do you have any tips to encourage her to drink more water, or will she just take it when she needs it? Her water is always left out. Thanks!

Cats are notoriously fussy when it comes to drinking water, but will drink different amounts depending on their diet.

As your cat is eating wet food, it is likely she is getting much of her water intake from her diet, whereas cats that mainly have a dry diet will often drink more water.

Heres a good guide to how much water a cat should drink each day:

  • Kitten up to three months 70ml
  • Six-month-old kitten 135ml
  • Medium cat 200ml
  • Large cat 300ml

You can encourage your cat to drink more water by separating her water bowl from her food bowl and using a wide, ceramic or plastic bowl which cats prefer.

When To Call The Vet And What To Expect From A Visit

How Do I Get My Cat to Drink Water | Chewy

If you suspect your cat’s water intake has increased or are unsure, a thorough check over by your veterinarian is highly recommended as the sooner a disease is identified, the better the prognosis. Your vet will most likely also recommend some pathology tests requiring a blood and/ or urine sample to help determine the cause of the polydipsia .

A general blood profile can provide information on kidney and liver enzymes, glucose levels and also assess the health of the red and white blood cells. Further blood tests can be run, when indicated, to assess thyroid hormone levels.

A great deal of information can also be obtained from a urine sample from your cat – including the presence of glucose, blood, protein and the concentration of the urine sample. You may be requested to collect a sample from home not an easy task but achievable if your cat uses a litter tray.

How to collect a urine sample from your cat at home

  • Empty your cats litter tray of litter
  • Clean it with soap and water
  • Place some non-absorbable litter material such as Catrine crystals or a plastic bag cut up into strips into the clean kitty litter tray
  • When your cat urinates, place the urine in a clean glass jar or a urine collection container
  • If possible, get the urine sample to the clinic within 1 hour from collection or place it in the fridge and get it to the clinic within 12 hours.

Water Needs Depend On Diet

If your cat isn’t drinking the water you set out for her but otherwise seems healthy and has no litter box problems it may be because you’re feeding her canned food. Canned food is very moist being almost 80% water. Cats who eat wet cat food just aren’t thirsty because they’re getting all the hydration they need from food.

Cats that eat dry cat food need a dish of water, preferably not too close to the food because cats like their water very clean. If Kitty has been getting into salty or sweet foods, she might be a little thirstier than usual.

Kittens being weaned might not drink as much as they should because they’re still getting used to this whole eating on their own thing. They may only drink if they see Mama drinking and if Mama is eating canned food, it may take them awhile to catch on.

If Baby shows signs of dehydration, you might need to feed her water with a syringe or spoon until she gets the idea to drink on her own. You can also try moistening the kitten chow a little, soaked but not stirred.

What If My Kitten Is Poorly

Most of the time you shouldnt have to worry too much about your cats fluid intake unless they are showing signs of ill-health. If your kitten or adult cat becomes unwell they may stop drinking and might be losing fluids through diarrhoea and vomiting. If this occurs you should speak to your veterinarian as dehydration could occur, particularly in very young animals.

Signs of severe dehydration include lethargy, sunken eyes, loss of skin elasticity , decreased urination and inappetence. Cats can also on occasion go the other way and drink to excess if there are underlying health conditions. Particularly those affecting the kidneys and blood sugar levels.

At the other end of the spectrum, if you often notice your cat at the water bowl or they seem to be drinking a particularly large volume of water or showing a lot of interest in the water itself, this is often indicative of an underlying health problem. Some cats actively enjoy playing in water and splashing about, but if your cat is actually drinking or trying to drink rather than just playing, it is important to look a little more closely to discern if they are maybe drinking too much.Drinking too much water, especially when accompanied by a corresponding increase in their urine output can indicate the onset of a range of potentially serious health conditions, including diabetes, kidney and renal problems, thyroid problems and bladder infections. Monitor your cats water intake for a few days if you suddenly start to notice that they may be drinking a lot but are in otherwise good health. But dont leave it too long to get your cat checked out by your vet if you suspect a problem, as by the time dehydration and increased water intake manifest within cats, the underlying cause of this symptom can often be quite advanced.
