  • Growth/lump On A Cats Eyelid

Unlike in dogs, lumps and bumps on the eyelids are not common in cats. These are most commonly benign and slow growing.

However, you should still take your cat to the vet within a few daysparticularly if the bump grows/changes, causes inflammation in the eye, has any pigment to it, or seems to bother your cat.

    Why The Eyes Are Green

Human eyes reflect red because the light is hitting the retina’s blood vessels. The eyes of animals, on the other hand, reflect green, blue, white, or yellow light because of their night vision.

Many animals have a membrane called the tapetum lucidum in their eyes. In animals that have this membrane, the light is blocked from striking the blood-rich retina that would show up as red-eye. Different light spectrums are reflected from this membrane based on its chemical makeup and it can vary from one animal to the next.

Blue-eyed cats do not have the same membrane in their eyes so they actually show red eye instead.

Feline Herpesvirus : Its Not Just A Cold

Most cats have at one time or another been exposed to Feline Herpesvirus. Some cats will show symptoms for the virus. Other cats will be carriers and show no symptoms because the virus lies dormant in their systems.

The virus can activate at any time, especially when a cat is stressed. Unfortunately, theres no cure, but FHV-1 can be managed to make the cat more comfortable and minimize flare-ups.

    Symptoms:

    • Upper respiratory symptoms coughing, runny nose, or sneezing
    • Conjunctivitis swelling or inflammation of the outer lining of the eye
    • Corneal ulcerations these are serious eye issues that need immediate vet attention to maintain vision in your kitty

    Diagnosis & Treatment:

    • Fluorescein eye stain test todetectif an ulcer or injury is present
    • Eye drops or a topical ointment to ease symptoms and heal infections
    • Oral antibiotics or antiviral medications to treat an upper respiratory infection if present
    • Lowering stress asstress can activate the virus
    • Lysine vitamin supplements may help reduce or eliminate virus flares

    Discoloration Of The Iris

    Cats Eyes Make Up Glamroz

The iris is the colored rim of tissue that surrounds the dark pupil at the center of a cats eye. Normally, a cats eye color doesnt change in adulthood . However, a condition called iris melanosis can result in the development of brown freckles or patches of pigment on the iris, usually in middle-aged to older cats. Iris melanosis typically does not cause any problems, but severe cases may result in dysfunction of the iris and sometimes glaucoma .

While iris melanosis is usually not a serious condition, it can be confused with iris melanoma, a potentially serious type of cancer. If you see a new patch of dark pigment on your cats iris, bring it to your veterinarians attention. He or she should be able to tell you whether it is anything to worry about after performing an eye exam.

    How To Take Cat Pictures

Taking cat pictures is certainly more complicated than taking dog pictures because a dog will listen to you. Its also more challenging than taking pictures of slower animals that wont run away at the slightest distraction. Still, it can be done. I definitely recommend using a long focal length. Imagine you are a photographer in the jungle photographing jaguars. Only this time youre creeping around the living room carpet hoping your cat isnt more interested in you than the bird at the window.

I take cat pictures on my 80-200mm lens and I find this to be the perfect lens size for maintaining the right amount of distance. You can always use a shorter focal length. If your cat is a bit calmer and lets you, try macro photography of your cats eyes, ideally from the side. Cats move a lot so be sure to use a short shutter speed.

We also recommend using treats to get your cat to go where you want. More tips on cat photography can be found in the article, How to Take Cat Photos That Will Attract and Amuse.

    Prognosis For Cats With Conjunctivitis

If your cat was diagnosed with the infectious type of conjunctivitis, it will still carry the virus in its system. That only means your cat is prone to relapses.

If your cat has either type of conjunctivitis but it hasn’t been treated or it has not cleared up on its own, it could lead to many future problems, including damage to the eye and blindness.

    Watch Out For Side Effects

Certain eye medication can cause side effects, which you need to recognize. Inform the vet if you observe symptoms such as swollen eye lids, sneezing or lethargy.

If the eye irritation persists and an at home treatment doesnt prove to be effective, you will need to get veterinary help.

The cat may require oral antibiotics, which can be prescribed only by a specialist.

The cat may have something in his eyes causing the irritation and this needs to be extracted.

    What Causes Green Eye

Green eye occurs when light enters the eye of an animal at the same level as the eye. If your pet looks up at your camera when the flash goes off, the light from the flash can reflect from the back of their retina and this can cause a colored glow over their pupils.

When light reflects off an object it does so in a sort of “V” shape . If your pet is looking directly at the camera and the flash is at the same level as their eye, the light enters their eye and is directed right back to the camera, causing the glow.

Quite often, this happens when the pupil of an eye is dilated such as in a dark room or when outside at night. The animal’s pupil is naturally larger so they can see better at night and this also allows more reflected light to enter and exit the eye.

  • 1Keep up to date with your cat’s vaccination. It may be surprising but vaccinations can prevent some eye infections. Cat flu and chlamydia are two common causes of eye infections that vaccination can prevent.XResearch source
  • 2Take your cat to the veterinarian so the infection can be assessed and treated. Eye infections are commonly caused either by bacteria or viruses. Viral infections are self-limiting and the cat’s own immune system will fight the infection. Bacterial infections are treated with topical eye ointments or drops that contain antibiotic.
  • Viruses which affect the eye include herpesvirus and calicivirus. Some veterinarians will supply topical antibiotics even if a viral infection is suspected, this is because these infections could be mixed with complicating bacteria that cause secondary infections.XResearch sourceBSAVA Manual of Small Animal Ophthalmology. • The bacteria that may colonize the eye and cause infection include Staphylococci, E.coli, Proteus, and Pseudomonas. It is very important to always wash your hands thoroughly after handling a cat with sticky eyes, as these infections can spread.
  • 3Apply medicine as directed. Depending on the formulation antibiotic treatments are applied anywhere from twice a day to hourly. Oral antibiotics are not usually given for eye infections unless it is not possible to use an ointment because of the cat’s temperament.
  • Use Retouching For Final Touch

Retouching usually isnt necessary on the cat itself, but rather for its surroundings. For example, remove a toy or treat you used to attract the cat or get its attention. For this purpose, youll want to use Retouching Tools . To remove objects you dont want, the Clone Stamp or Healing Brush should be more than enough.
