Every morning when I make the bed, Norman the Tonkinese jumps up and follows me around the bed as I try to work around him. He is persistent in his demand for attention, knowing my attention is focused on the bed, and by default him. Some days I will rub his belly, and he enjoys it, other times he will claw me. What is interesting is he displays inhibited behaviour, if he wanted to hurt me he could, but his claws are soft, and he is sending a message without actually causing any harm. I just roll with it, if he doesnt want his belly rubbed, I stop, if he is enjoying it, I carry on.
All we can do is read our cats body language, adjust our behaviour accordingly and feel flattered that our cat trusts us.

The whole movement is called indenting and its leftover behavior from cats having to live in the wild. Theyd plop down into plants or brush to hide themselves, to keep warm, and for comfort.
The behavior can be mistaken as affection when done to humans but its still a survival instinct through and through. Its not really an act of dominance or aggression, but a cat will do it to mostly anyone for his own comfort and well-being.
If kitty is precise enough, hell hit the same spot each time and the human will eventually flatten and find himself with a permanent cat-dent in his body. The cat eventually wont even have to get up if the human goes to the fridge, hell be wedged into his dent comfortably, just riding around. If he indented over any part of the central nervous system, he can also pilot the human using electrical signals from his whiskers.

Any time I do approach Thomas or Taras bellies, Im constantly aware of subtle signs of discomfort, like a twitching tail tip or a glance toward my hand, and I stop as soon as I see it.
Have I gone in for the belly rub, even though I knew better? Yes, of course I have. Havent we all? But Ive only done it with cats Ive known for many years. I still got a paw-smack or two while doing so.
