What Is A Pet Year

Dogs and cats age more rapidly than humans. At one time or another weve all heard the expression dog years, but most of us are unaware of how the relative age and weight of our pets is calculated by veterinarians and others in the pet health field.

For dogs,;its slightly more complicated, as size and weight also has an impact. Generally, the heavier and larger the dog, the more swiftly they age.

Physical And Mental Development

No doubt, youve noticed your cat is slowing down. That process will only continue and become more noticeable as he ages. Older cats frequently develop arthritis in their joints, making it harder to jump up on the back of the couch, climb the cat condo or get into and out of the litterbox. Vision and hearing loss are also common. Youve probably already noticed an increase in catnaps, another indication that your cat is getting a little older. Like most senior animals, aging cats can develop dementia, and from this point on, your cat is at increased risk. It is harder for him to learn new things and adjust to change now, and he may get confused more easily. Always report these physical and mental changes to your veterinarian since they may be the first signs of disease. While elderly cats may tend to have more problems, many of these complications of old age can be successfully managed. For example, cats suffering with joint pain have more pain management options than in the past.

It’s common to see a cat reach 20 years old these days, Becker says, so it’s safe to assume a healthy cat will make it within a few years of that. Recently, the world’s oldest a cat made it all the way to 31 years old.;

We can’t guarantee your feline pal will make it into a third decade, but there are a few things you can do to elongate your cat’s life. Becker lists three main factors that determine your cat’s longevity: heredity, environment, and nutrition.

There’s not much you can do about heredity once you bring home your cat, Becker says. But you can do your best to make her environment safe. That means limiting time outsidewhere dangers like predators, vehicles, and parasites could injure your cat. That’s why outdoor cats generally don’t live as long as their indoor counterparts.;

The third factor is nutrition, so you’ll want to work with your veterinarian to make sure your kitty stays as close to her healthy weight as possible. Cats at or near their ideal body weight will live longer than those who aren’t, Becker says.

As with people over the years and advances in medicine, cats have almost doubled their life expectancy. Now each cat is different and your health, care, and nutrition will be essential to determine the years you will live.

Another important factor is whether it is a domestic cat or a cat that lives on the street. The more exposed you are to the dangers of the street the less life expectancy you will have.

In general, a stray cat can live for 2-3 years without castrating and about 5-6 if it is neutered. But their conditions and health will be fundamental to their life expectancy. In the case of domestic cats the average life is 15 to 21 years.

  • ;A cat has a relatively short childhood. A cat with an expected lifespan of 15 years would be sexually and physically mature within 18 months. Do Indoor And Outdoor Cats Age The Same Way

Another factor that may play a role in how cats age is whether theyre indoor or indoor-outdoor cats. In fact, the AAHA actually states that this is a controversial topic and there is valid rationale behind both sides of the argument.

According to the AAHA, indoor cats are less likely to experience trauma and exposure to certain infectious diseases which may result in longer lifespans. On the other hand, indoor cats may be at a greater risk for illness due to environmental limitations.

For outdoor cats, the reverse is true. Although outdoor cats can benefit from a natural and stimulating environment, theyre at a much greater risk for trauma and exposure to disease.

Ultimately, its up to each cat parent to decide which of these lifestyle options works best for their cat, but its worth noting that this decision may contribute to the way your cat ages.

According to the site icatcare.org, there are 6 life stages for cats:

  • Kitten the young cat is growing rapidly and is usually not quite sexually mature
  • the cat reaches full size and learns about life and how to survive it
  • Prime the cat is mature physically and behaviourally, and is still usually healthy and active, looking sleek and shiny and making the best of life
  • Mature the cat is what we call ‘Mature’, equivalent to humans in their mid-40s to mid-50s
