Cutting The Carpeting To Size

How to Repair a Carpet Damaged by a Cat : Carpet & Rugs

The next thing that you now need to do is to cut the carpet down to size. This is probably the hardest part of this whole project. Depending on the type, size, and complexity of cat tree you have, this can be quite a task. At the very least, you will have the base, a couple of platforms, and a pillar or two that will need to be fitted with carpet.

Therefore, it is time to bust out your measuring tape and carpet knife. Remember to always measure twice and cut once, plus also leave an inch or two extra in terms of length and width. You can always cut more carpet off if the pieces are too large, but you definitely cannot repair it if you happen to cut it too small.

Before you begin attaching it, make sure that it is the right size. You dont want to start gluing, nailing, or stapling the carpet onto the cat tree frame before you have double-checked the size of the pieces and the cat tree.

Staples Flaps And Loose Seams

Some carpet installers join carpet under the stair nose, or at the top of the riser in back. If the seam is at 90 degrees, hot-melt tape won’t work. In this instance, staples work better for flaps or loose seams caused by cats. Staples also work better than nails or tacks, which can pull loose. Use a staple gun that shoots staples with at least a 3/4-inch leg and 1/4-inch crown. This type of staple will never pull loose. Press the carpet back into place with your hand. Shoot a row of staples along the seam 1/2 inch from the edge.

If the carpet is loose under the rounded front of the bullnose, bend the carpet as needed, and hold the staple gun on the back side of the bullnose or under it vertically. Lean to one side and wear safety glasses when stapling the carpet back into place if you’re shooting staples at an odd angle. If you can see the staples and that bothers you, use a stiff brush to work the fibers over the staples to cover them.

Is It Cheaper To Repair Or Replace Carpet

A carpet repair professional can put a patch over a tear, dye a problem area, or remove a stubborn spot for less than the installation cost of new carpeting. With a national average cost of $500-$2,000 to install a new carpet, a professional carpet repair or cleaning can save you hundreds on this type of flooring.A

Remove The Old Carpet:

HELP: Repairing cat scratched carpet damage in a rental : DIY

The first step is to remove the old carpet pinned to the old cat tree. Removing the old carpet is the toughest part of the entire process, and one needs serious strength to tear it down.

The difficulty of removing the carpet entirely depends on the type of material used to cover the main structure and how firmly manufacturers attached it to the underlying structure.

While it is easy to remove the carpet from an old and loose cat tree, it can be a tough step if one has purchased the cat tree recently.

Most cat owners, who re-carpet the cat trees themselves, have mentioned that the easiest way to remove the old carpeting is by cutting the old carpet using a utility knife.

However, one should be very careful with the depth of cuts, as it can ruin the underlying structure.

When one has cut the old carpet at several places and made it loosened sufficiently, use a plier or any staple removal tool to take the nails out of the matting.

This step requires muscle, and it can be tedious if one is doing this for the first time. Repeating these two processes repeatedly, one can remove the old carpet entirely.

How Do I Fix Where Cat Scratched And Tore Carpet From Threshold

My cat got trapped in my home office overnight and made the mess as shown in the picture trying to dig her way out. The sharp tack strip is exposed. There is not enough carpet to stretch. Is there a threshold cover big enough to cover it? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

A typical way to fix this type of damage depends upon having a remnant available. Repair consists of cutting back from the door to good solid carpet material using nice straight edges. A replacement piece is cut from the remnant to fit and then joined to the original carpet using a hot melt carpet splicing tape. .

If no remnant is available then your choices become a bit more drastic including the following:

  • The possibility to borrow a chunk of carpet from another part of the existing installation. Possibility could be to remove carpet from a closet for the repair and then re-do the closet in tile.

  • Full up replacement of the carpet in the office with something new. A new spring time update may be just what is in store anyway.

  • Conversion of the office space from a carpeted floor to some other style. One possible style could be a laminate floor.

  • Prevent Habits From Forming

If youve recently adopted a new cat, be sure to provide plenty of scratching surfaces and encourage your cat to use them. If your feline gets used to scratching on a scratching post, they will likely not suddenly switch to scratching on the carpet unless anxiety is involved. Habits can be hard to kick, but they can also be your best friend if they are good habits.

Prevention is often the best medicine in this case, so we highly recommend encouraging your cat to scratch on appropriate places from day one. While little kittens have little nails and cant do much damage, they will one day be a big cat that can.

    Downsides Of Nail Caps

However, soft plastic caps arent a one-size-fits-all solution. Many of the downsides of declawing apply to nail caps. For example, a cat with nail caps will not defend itself and may become insecure and aggressive. This isnt always true and may be less common than declawing, but it is still possible.

Nail caps can be pulled off and eaten, which can be potentially deadly for cats. Some cats dont like them and will figure out a way to get them off. Furthermore, cats are unable to take care of their claws properly with nail caps on. This can cause discomfort and may result in your feline attempting to scratch more or pull the caps off.

They are not a permanent solution, as they will come off in time. They will need to be replaced every 4-6 weeks. This can be difficult to do with some cats and may warrant a vet visit. Proper application is a must, or it can cause serious problems.

Soft caps also affect how cats walk and balance. They will need a period of adjustment, though some cats never quite figure out how to walk with them on. It isnt entirely unusual for some cats to refuse to walk with them on.

Choosing A Scratching Post For Your Cat

Cats need to scratch to keep their claws sharp, exercise and stretch their muscles and mark their territory.

If you fail to provide an acceptable area to scratch then your carpets, furniture and wallpaper may get damaged. Once a cat finds an attractive area to scratch they will always return to it! Scratching posts come in all shapes and sizes and are an essential addition to your home. They often include upright wooden posts covered with thick sisal twine or carpet together with platforms, beds, hiding boxes and dangling toys for the more energetic individuals. Scratching posts can be free-standing or designed to fix to a wall or floor.

Before you choose one for your cat you may want to consider these criteria:

    • Ensure the post is rigid cats need resistance when they scratch to do the best job
    • Make sure its tall enough for your cat to scratch at full stretch. If you buy one for your kitten you will need to change it when it grows up
    • Make sure you offer opportunities for your cat to scratch both horizontal and vertical surfaces
    • If it is a tall modular scratching post with various platforms and bed attachments it must be stable. There is nothing worse than a tall scratching post that falls over when your cat launches itself at full speed
    • If you purchase a tall scratching unit that, once assembled, seems unstable, you may get a more rigid unit if you attach it via a bracket to the wall

This is done by cutting out that portion of the carpet and using it as a template to cut a new patch. These kinds of repairs are why it is so important to keep any remnants of your carpet when the carpet is initially installed in your home.

Scratching Is Good For A Cat’s Health

Scratching is perfectly natural and actually good for your cat’s health. Scratching helps your kitty fully stretch her body and release the tension in her back muscles.1

Scratching also lets cats shed the outer layers of their claws, revealing sharper layers beneath. This is why you sometimes find pieces of claws around the house.2

    Remove The Old Carpet

The first step is to remove the old carpet from the old cat tree. Depending on how the cat tree is built will determine how hard and long it will take to remove the old carpet. Cat trees with carpet glue will require some serious strength to disassemble.

However, if you are lucky some cat trees like this one, the fabric is glued down with hot glue, so its not that much of a chore to get off.

Whatever you do, however you do it, you need to remove the old carpet. Here are two different videos of re-carpeting a cat tree to see the difference between how hard it is based on how your old cat tree is assembled.

Its important to try to keep the carpet you take off, preferably in larger sections so that you can use it for measurements.

Most people will choose to start with a box- or carpet-cutting knife to remove the old carpet in strips or large swaths. Just be careful that you do not cut too deeply because you dont want to end up damaging the frame of the actual cat tree underneath.

Depending on how your cat tree is built, you may need to use a claw hammer and other tools to remove nails, or various tools to remove staples. Different cat trees are built in different ways, so this is something that you will need to account for.

While you’re working on methods to stop your cat’s carpet scratching, you’ll want to minimize the damage to your home in the meantime. Trim your cat’s claws regularly, using a sharp claw-trimming tool. This will help keep the damage to a minimum.

You may also wish to try a product like nail caps. These should only be applied to cats that allow you to handle and manipulate their paws. If you’ve never used nail caps before, many veterinarians and most large pet supply stores offer installation and training for a small fee. Your cat probably won’t mind them, and they’ll prevent the shredding-type of damage your cat sometimes inflicts on your rugs.

Should I Punish My Cat For Scratching

No. Punishment is effective only if you catch your cat in the act of scratching unacceptable objects and have provided her with acceptable scratching objects. Punishment after the fact, wont change the behavior, may cause her to be afraid of you or the environment and may elicit defensive aggression. Used by itself, punishment wont resolve scratching problems because it doesnt teach your cat where to scratch instead.

If you do catch her in the act of scratching inappropriate objects, remote punishment is best, in which you do not directly interact with her. Ideas for remote punishment include making a loud noise , throwing a pillow at her or using a water-filled squirt bottle. If punishment is interactive, shell learn to refrain from scratching in your presence but will continue to scratch when youre not around.

Would a piece of molding covering the damage do the job for now?Hopefully someone has a good idea before I start hacking at the floor! Thanks,Chris
