Kittens Abandoned On Staten Island Roadside Available For Adoption

Rescued kittens arrive at local adoption center

NEW YORK – Thirteen kittens abandoned inside a cardboard box on a Staten Island roadside are doing fine and looking to find homes.

The tiny felines were rescued on Saturday by Tracy Parisi, a volunteer for the Staten Island Council for Animal Welfare.

Parisi said she didn’t expect the overwhelming response from people wanting to adopt the kittens.

“I received over 70 emails which just recently crashed my server,” Parisi told 1010 WINS. “We definitely have enough homes to choose from.”

Two kittens already have found homes.

Parisi said the kittens are friendly and range in age from 7 weeks old to 10-12 weeks old and are possibly from three litters. All the kittens are being examined by a veterinarian.

“They were all extremely clean and very friendly, which means that they were definitely born in a house,” Parisi said.

Parisi told the Staten Island Advance that she rescued the animals after a friend walking his dog near Glen Street and South Avenue came upon the box.

Q: Why Is It Important That I Foster

A: Some studies show that as much as 84% of people just dont know about the problems of homeless pet population, overcrowding in shelters, or how fostering fits into saving lives. We believe that fostering is the critical link between rescuing a pet from a shelter and matching them with a wonderful adopter. A loving foster home is simply the best environment for their health and wellbeing, far better than a shelter.

Q: How Long Will I Keep My Foster Pet

A: Some fosters can be adopted quickly, while some take longer to find that right family. All fosters first need to decompress during their quarantine period. While some are scooped up right away, fosters can typically expect ranges from 2-4 weeks. Some animals do take longer to be matched with a great adopter.

Q: What If I Dont Have Enough Time To Foster

There are a number of ways you can become involved! Sure, a litter of puppies isnt the best fit for you, but maybe consider fostering an older cat or dog who just wants a nice, warm place to sleep. Or, if dont think you can commit to a longer period, we frequently need shorter-term fosters. For example, you can help for just a weekend or when a pets regular foster goes on vacation. We are also always looking for pet lovers to join our volunteer team. If that suits your schedule better, please visit

Q: What Do I Do If My Foster Pet Needs Veterinary Care

A: Louies Legacy has an experienced Medical Team to help you with medical questions or concerns. Youll contact them first. Very frequently, they can help you navigate common situations. If the Medical Team does determine veterinary care is necessary, youll visit one of our highly respected, local veterinarians. They work closely with us and have earned our trust by providing excellent care for our animals.

Q: I Already Have A Pet Can I Still Foster

Absolutely! Socialization is great for both your foster and for your existing pets! Keep in mind that its very important your foster pet be quarantined for a specified time period in order to reduce the risk of illness. Once our team lets you know the quarantine is done, you can slowly introduce your own pets to your foster pets. The Foster Team will give you help throughout the process. Its a good idea to make sure your own pets are up to date on their vaccinations.

Why Should You Adopt

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.

Q: I Hear You But Does Fostering Really Make A Difference

A: Absolutely, positively, without a doubt, 100%, yes! You literally save a life every time you foster. Unfortunately, thousands of animals still die in shelters across the country. Were doing our very best to solve that problem, and we know exactly how to do it fostering to adoption.

And not only will it make a difference for your foster pet, it will make a difference for you! The experience is incredibly rewarding. In fact, numerous scientific studies have shown that both caring for animals and donating your time or service measurably influences your own health and happiness!

Q: Can I Adopt My Foster Pet

A: At some point in your fostering career you may fall in love. Maybe youll even be ready to commit to a lifetime together. How exciting! Some call that a fosterfail but we consider it a fosterwin!. Youll have the chance, within a certain window, to let our team know youd like to adopt your foster. Please keep in mind that there is a time limit we have to respect and that youll still go through the same matchmaking process as other applicants.

Q: How Does The Foster Program Work

A: We work with a number of shelters and partners to rescue animals in need and place them into temporary, loving homes like yours! We focus on helping our local community, as well as areas that are in extremely high need of our help. Since we are a completely foster based organization, every animal has the opportunity to decompress from the stress of the shelter and start to develop into their real selves. While in foster, youll help us gather information about your foster pets personality, which helps us find them a wonderful adoption match. Once that match is found, it will be time to give them a big hug and maybe just one more treat!

During the weeks following the storm our organization also assisted residents in hurricane hit areas to spay/neuter feral cats, and find placement for feral cats at Happy Cats sanctuary in NY that were unable to continue residing at locations deemed to dangerous. Thanks to another generous grant by ASPCA specifically for hurricane Sandy residents we were able to cover veterinarian care to a select number of residents that needed assistance with feral cats.
