The brand relies on other companies to make its pet food products. Natural Balance is large enough to build and manufacture its own pet food products, but they choose to outsource this process.
After reviewing the recall history of Natural Balance, we believe that many of the recalls could have been avoided if Natural Balance made its own pet food.
For example, Natural Balance said inside an official press release that the April, 2007 melamine contamination was a result of manufacturing deviation by American Nutrition. An issue that would have never happened if Natural Balance controlled the manufacturing process. American Nutrition was adding a contaminated rice protein concentrate into Natural Balance products when rice protein concentrate was not even listed on the label.
We’d like to mention that after the 2007 melamine recall, Natural Balance invested hundreds of thousands of dollars to build a testing laboratory. Today, every batch of food or treats manufactured for Natural Balance are tested for the following 9 substances.

Don’t Stress But Here’s What To Do
Cat owners who use Natural Balance pet foods should check the back of their bags.
Natural Balance Pet Foods, Inc., just issued a recall of 5- and 10-pound bags of their Natural Balance L.I.D. limited ingredient diets green pea & chicken formula dry cat food due to possible Salmonella contamination.
If you have a bag, you can check the codes on the back to see if your bag is affected. The affected bags have an expiration date of March 10, 2022, and retail codes of 2363306234 or 2363300235. See the photo below for an example of what that looks like:
If you do have a bag and even if you’ve already fed some to your cat don’t stress! According to Natural Balance, no cats have been reported sick so far, but the company is issuing the recall out of an abundance of caution.

When it was recalled: June 18, 2022
Why it was recalled: Freshpet recalled 4.5-pound bags of the Fresh From The Kitchen Home Cooked Chicken Recipe for possible salmonella contamination. The good news is that Freshpet hadnt gotten any reports from customers about adverse reactions at the time of the recall.
The recall is only limited to food from a single lot. Your pups food is only affected if its got the UPC code 627975011673, the lot code 10/29/22 and the expiration date 10/29/22 L3.
Freshpet had been aware of the contamination and had planned to destroy the lot, but some of the affected food was accidentally sent to Walmarts in Alabama and Georgia, some Target locations and other retailers in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia.
