What Makes Us Special

For more than 55 years, The Hermitage No-Kill Cat Shelter and Sanctuary has been dedicated to the shelter, protection, and care of homeless cats. We believe every cat is adoptable and deserves a chance at a happy, healthy life. Our 9000-sq-ft, cage-free shelter houses 200+ cats at a time and we rescue about 700 cats annually. All of our cats roam freely in their designated sections of the shelter, including outdoor, enclosed catios. We are one of a very small number of accredited sanctuaries in the entire United States which shelters cats with FIV and FeLV . Our goal is to find the perfect adopter for every cat, but, following a no-kill philosophy, we provide cats with a safe home for as long as they need it. At The Hermitage, we ensure that every cat who enters our shelter is given the best in medical and physical care, including affection. Here, each cat is treated as an amazing, individual being.

HSSET asks for a $25 surrender fee for single animals and a $10 surrender feeper animal for a litter of 2 or more animals to to help offset the cost of their first vaccines and exam. Animals who are current on vaccinations with documentation will have their surrender fees waived.

We receive an average of 7 surrender forms a day but we will contact you as soon as possible. How To Contact Orange County Florida Animal Control

People often find a litter of kittens, or hear cats fighting or mating at night. If you have problems like these, call the county animal control number at 407-836-3111. However, if you have a problem with a wild animal, such as a raccoon or opossum, the orange county animal services in Florida will not help you.

Schedule Your Visit To Our Facility

We are no longer scheduling meetings with specific pets. Animals may be met with on a first-come, first-served basis. We are asking everyone to make an appointment to visit our facility and view pets on our adoption floor and potentially meet with those that are available. If you are interested in scheduling a time to visit, please call 919-942-7387, option 3, to speak with a staff member at our adoption desk. If the staff is unable to answer right away, please leave a clear message with your full name and contact number. Our staff responds to messages in the order they are received. Every effort will be made to respond to messages the same day, but it is possible that you may not receive a callback until the next business day due to the high volume of calls we often receive. If you have already left a clear message, please do not leave multiple messages as checking extra messages makes it more difficult for our staff to respond in a timely manner. Appointments end an hour before closing on any business day. See our hours on this page.

MASKS ARE REQUIRED AT ANIMAL SERVICES. All visitors and employees accessing Orange County facilities will be required to wear a face covering indoors regardless of vaccination status. We also ask that everyone practice social distancing while conducting any business at our facility.

Please Read Carefully Before Determining Which Shelter To Contact

    LA Animal Shelters Approaching No

The shelter system in Orange County can be confusing. Surprisingly, the shelter closest to you may not service your area.

Whether looking to adopt an animal, searching for a lost pet or in need of other Animal Control Services such as reporting animal cruelty or reporting a stray/loose animal, it is important to carefully read which shelter you will need to visit or call. For instance, there is a shelter in Huntington Beach on Newland Ave. However, if a lost animal gets picked up in Huntington Beach, the lost animal is housed at the shelter in the City of Orange on the City Drive and not the shelter in Huntington Beach.

Please keep in mind that it is always important to check not only the shelter that services your area but also the shelter in your immediate area and shelters in surrounding areas as well. For instance, a cat may jump in a delivery truck and get relocated out of the area or a person may pick up your lost pet and take them out of your area. Animals can travel far from your home because they can run long distances. It is also important to physically check local animal shelters because your pet may look different in his or her picture or may be listed incorrectly as a different breed on the shelter website.

In addition, most shelters have a Lost Pets registry or bulletin board. And, check with each shelters record of animals dead on arrival.

Please see the list of shelters below and pay close attention to the services each shelter provides.

So You Found A Stray Animal What Next

If you have found a stray animal, there are a couple of steps you can take to make sure the animal is returned to its owner. First, bring the animal to your veterinarian or the Humane Society where they will be scanned for a microchip. This does not mean HSSET can accept the animal, but can assist you in locating the family. The next step we highly recommend is posting a photo of the pet to the Facebook pages Lost and Found Pets of SE Texas, and your local animal control. And finally, complete a stray surrender form for the Humane Society of Southeast Texas.

    Adopting An Animal From Aaloc

AALOC is a no-kill, nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing dogs and cats from shelters, the streets and neglectful or abusive situations. We assist all animals that we have room for and have no preconditions. We rescue all ages, all breeds, including animals with medical conditions. We commit to care for them as if they were our own pets, with the best food, veterinary care, training and love until they find a family and a home that is safe, loving, and forever. We are not “in a hurry to get rid of them” and we select homes that will continue to care for them as we have. We do everything possible to ensure that their lives will only get better once they come through our doors, into our hearts, and eventually yours.

    Adoption Requirements

Application will be processed once potential adopter has met the dog or cat.

Adoption application, veterinary reference, and home visit is required.

The Adoption Application assists us in finding a pet that is a good match for you, your family, your other pets, and your lifestyle.

The Home Visit is done in or near Orange County by a volunteer member of the Kennel Committee who will bring the dog or cat you want to adopt to your home when all family members are present. You will have time to spend with the pet in your home before making a final decision to adopt. Pets are checked for compatibility. Pets are not adopted on home visits.
