I feel good that chicken is the first ingredient and I appreciate all the natural ingredients in the dog food including pea protein, brown rice, oatmeal, carrots, blueberries, kelp, cranberries, and more.

This product also comes with a 100% money-back guarantee, so if your pet doesnt like it, you can take it back for a full refund.

Open Nature Animal Testing

We have no information on what type of testing Open Nature or Safeway does to test its dog or cat food products.

There has been a strong increase in interest about animal testing, feeding trials, and other related areas. Many pet owners are concerned about if there is sufficient testing done by smaller pet food brands and if their food is safe for long-term consumption.

However, we strongly believe that Open Nature outsources its Open Nature product to a third-party manufacturer. Due to this, the testing of these products is likely carried out by this third party.

We strongly believe that invasive or laboratory-style testing of animals is a cruel and outdated practice and one which we hope will be eliminated in the coming years.

Kitten Adult Or Senior

Cats are roughly divided into three age groups kitten, adult and senior when it comes to cat food.

While you might have a good idea of which bucket your cat falls into, Julien recommends consulting your veterinarian about your cats specific dietary needs in conjunction with age, and to get an expert read on what needs or restrictions your cat might be exhibiting. Kittens need more energy-producing nutrients like proteins and fats and more vitamins, minerals and water than adult cats, says Ferris. Formulas made specifically for kittens provide these nutrients in the right amounts.

Most cats will move from kitten kibbles to adult food on their first birthday. Ferris tells pet owners its important to gradually work in new food over a week to help avoid upsetting your feline friends stomach. Adult cat food likely has less calories than kitten cuisine, while senior food will likely be geared toward the specific health of your cat they might have trouble chewing or a reduced ability to smell and taste.

Wet Cat Food Is Usually Low In Carbohydrates

Theres absolutely no nutritionally-based rationale behind the high carbohydrate content of dry cat food. These high-carb ingredients exist to bind the kibble, allowing the extrusion process to work. They dont do anything good for your cats health and, indeed, they could make your cats health worse by contributing to obesity and diabetes.

Whether its grain-free or contains grains, dry cat food is typically high in carbohydrates. Across the price spectrum and all varieties, wet food is almost universally lower in unnecessary plant ingredients, starches, and sugars.

Adult Chicken & Chickpea Recipe Review

Based on our research, the best recipe from Open Natures limited cat food range is the above Chicken & Chickpea recipe.

Its primary ingredients of the recipe are Chicken and Chicken Meal which are both reputable animal-based ingredients.

Many consumers are cautious about pet food recipes with Meat Meals like Chicken Meal, but they shouldnt be. Meat Meals have simply had their moisture removed in advance, which means they are a more dense source of nutrition thanks to their lack of moisture.

This combination of Chicken and Chicken Meal provides a reasonable proportion of protein and fat that is suitable for the average cat.

The recipe then uses a mix of Potatoes, Chickpeas, and Peas to provide carbohydrates and fiber. Cats do not need a proportion of carbohydrates this high, but it is a necessary evil to ensure that the price of cat food is not high.

Dry Cat Food Versus Wet Or Canned Cat Food

Stop & Shop’s Cheapest Healthy Canned Cat Food – Nature’s Promise Cat Food Review

Dry cat food is a popular choice partly because it is more convenient than wet cat food. Dry food is cost-effective, odorless, and it can be stored for long periods of time without spoiling, says Ferris.

But Julien notes that dry cat food can also be higher in carbohydrates than wet cat food. Just as you think about all the sourdough youve been eating while baking at home, you should also consider the amount of carbs your cat is eating. An active cat can absolutely use carbohydrates as an energy source, says Julien, adding that a sedentary aka indoor cat will store extra carbs as fat.

Wet food requires a bit more effort it has to be refrigerated once the can or pouch is opened and can be more expensive. But it may also help cats get more water in their diet . Canned or wet food has higher levels of protein and fat, making it a great option for cats of various lifestyles and ages, says Kornreich.

Avoid Carrageenan Approach Xanthan Gum And Guar Gum With Caution

The most notorious cat food binder is carrageenan. While the carrageenan used in cat food is food-grade and theoretically wont cause inflammation or cancer, theres substantial evidence suggesting that food-grade carrageenan isnt as safe as it should be.

Xanthan gum is generally considered safe but might not be right for every cat. Its the product of simple sugar fermentation and may carry traces of the fermentation medium. Cats who are allergic to the soy, wheat, dairy, or corn used to make xanthan gum may have an allergic reaction. Some non-allergic cats experience diarrhea or GI discomfort after eating xanthan gum due to its high fiber content.

Why Does Any Of This Matter

New Open Nature Grain Pet Food Line & Coupons

Your cats are doing just fine on TV-ad-running garbage food, you say? They just love it, you say? Thats equivalent to saying that a toddler loves having Lucky Charms three meals a day. Of course they love it! Its sugary, nutritionally-barren filler laced with chemicals and artificial flavors.

Cats have evolved to subsist on animal protein, period. In fact, they need 5 times more protein in their diets than dogs do, making careful meal-planning on our parts even more crucial. Their bodies were simply not made to digest carbs like grains, corn, soy, or rice, and forcing them to do so inevitably leads to:

Cat Food Breakdown: The Good The Bad & The Heinous

The pet food industry and I have always had a bit of a rocky relationship. We dont call, we dont write. We definitely dont send Christmas cards. We have what you might call a dark and storied history.

Stick it where the sun dont shine, big pet food brands.

Why so much angst, you ask? My childhood dog and best friend of 13 years died from canine leukemia, caused in no small part by the various bits of garbage that pet food manufacturers are shoveling into our furry family members. After his death, I spent months researching pet food, going on mini-crusades against the pet food industry, and annoying the crap out of my family and friends.

The fruits of that labor, I present to you below.

Basic cat food rules:
  • Before you buy anything, check the ingredients on the back. By law, ingredients must be listed according to content, with the most prevalent ingredient listed first. The first 5 ingredients should always be a protein of some sort, and ideally not a by-product
  • No more than 10% of calories should come from carbohydrates . Grain-free is best, if you can swing it.
  • Wet food will generally be better for your cats than dry foods, since dry foods tend to be heavily processed, have high carb content and very little water content.
*Ill go more in-depth into why these things are important at the end of this post

What About Taurine Deficiency

Taurine is an essential amino acid and deficiency in this nutrient is a well-documented potential cause for DCM. In conducting their analysis, the FDA tested for taurine deficiency, but the majority of dogs diagnosed with DCM in relationship with grain-free diets were not found to be deficient.

Furthermore, taurine is derived from animal sources and not grains, so the concern that grain-free diets might contribute to taurine deficiency is unfounded.

Ultimately, when it comes to the subject of grain-free diets for cats there is no one-size-fits-all answer.

Its important to remember that grain-free diets are primarily a marketing tool used by pet food manufacturers the incidence of grain allergies in cats is actually fairly low. Though cats require animal-based sources for the majority of their nutrition, they have some ability to metabolize high-quality carbohydrates like whole grains and vegetables.

Remember as well that many grain-free diets are actually higher in carbohydrates than their grain-inclusive counterparts.

Wet Food Provides The Hydration Your Cat Needs

Its important to understand that cats dont naturally drink a lot of water. They instinctively prefer to get water from their food. Though cats who eat dry food do drink more water than those on moist diets, they nevertheless get less hydration than a wet food-fed cat.

Because they take in so much less water, these cats are prone to chronic dehydration and, consequently, feline lower urinary tract disease . FLUTD is a blanket term referring to the full spectrum of feline lower urinary tract disease. These conditions include urinary tract infections, urethral blockage, cystitis, and urinary crystals.

If your cat is a kibble addict, you might try to remedy the water deprivation problem by adding warm water to your cats bowl of kibble. Unfortunately, moistened kibble is prone to aflatoxin mold growth, so when you put water in it, youre creating a little terrarium of toxic fungus.

Alternatively, you could mix in a little bit of wet cat food with the dry food and see how your cat likes it. You could also try a water fountain for cats, which provides a running stream of fresh water for your cat.

Caru Classic Stews Product Review – Wet Cat Food – Natural Cat Food

Wet cat food or canned cat food are those cat food recipes that contain a high percentage of moisture. This moisture is an important aspect of a cats diet as it helps prevent chronic dehydration, which is commonplace among cats who only consume Dry Cat Food.

The nutrition of wet cat food varies significantly but tends to be somewhat better than Dry Cat Food on average. Unnecessary carbohydrates are less commonplace as they are not needed to create kibble. Despite this, some wet cat food does contain a significant proportion of carbohydrates.
