How To Get Your Cat To Eat

How to Give Catnip to Your Cat – Feeding Cats

There are several different options for trying to entice your cat to eat. You know your cat better than anyone, and based on their personality, you know the best option to start with. Additionally, you may need to combine different options. But dont try combinations until you have tried several individually first.

Is Catnip Healthy For Cats

Im asked that question quite often and its a very goodquestion and one that needs to be addressed if you want to know the answer.

The answer is YES! Catnipis safe for cats to eat. I will say that in the wild, cats love to take a nipfrom wildflowers. I would like to explain why cats take to catnip in the homeenvironment.

Catnip plants come from a perennial species and arecharacterized by the presence of two dark leaves on the stem of the plant. Inthe wild, catnip grows tall and is found growing along pathways. The branchesof these perennial flowers are twisted and bent as they grow up the sides offences and walls.

As to why your pet finds catnip so attractive, well, lets go with a few reasons, shall we?

To start, catnip is known to have calming effects on your cats nervous system.

You should feel some of that effect yourself when you give your cat its first dose of catnip.

But where does catnip come from? Its actually a native plant found in many parts of the world and can be found growing wild in the United States.

It was introduced into Europe in the nineteenth century and by the end of the century had been discovered and grown in many European countries.

In the United States, catnip is mainly grown as a recreationalplant, however, has also become a source of a variety of stimulants, which areused for both medicinal and recreational purposes.

Catnip grows from the same root as the related herb, which in turn is commonly called meows or meowth.

Why Does Catnip Make Some Cats Urinate Outside The Litter Box

It seems like the catnip somehow releases some hormonal response making cats male or female spray. Catnip has a strong effect on the cats body and this is some of the responses to that stimulus. Some cats dont even experience any effect with catnip, while others experience like being high similar to the influence of marijuana or LSD in people. This is due to the stimulant called nepetalactone that catnip contains.

I learned that kittens dont get very affected with catnip but as they get adult some cats react like this, they simply urinate right after the catnip use.

Some cats even urinate right on top of the catnip, others do huge urine next to where they eat the catnip. I read stories of some cat owners describing how the kitchen floor looked like a lagoon with pee right after they gave their cats some catnip. Thats was it! It was the catnip that made my cat do this unusual behavior.

Unfortunately I didnt get to record my cat when this happened, but I share with you this video of a cat peeing after consuming Catnip. This behavior is not so uncommon in cats.

My Cat Is Indifferent To Catnip

BMC Veterinary Research claims that around two-thirds of cats respond to this herb. However, Behavioral Processes dispute this data, claiming that all cats react and not just not visibly. Either way, it is undeniable that some cats react more than others. Heres why:

  • Recent exposure
  • Lack of smell
  • Genetic immunity

This herb produces different responses in cats. Some felines may just become notably more relaxed. This is known as a passive response to catnip. Examples include:

  • Lethargy
  • Lack of vocalization
  • Adopting the Sphinx pose

A cat that appears to be indifferent to catnip may just be enjoying some quiet inner harmony. As with active responses to catnip, this reaction will pass in about 10 minutes.

When I Found Out That Catnip Causes Litter Box Accidents

Catnip Full Nutrition Candy (2pcs)

About 3 months after this event I saw my cat playing with her catnip toy and decided to give her a little catnip herb so I did. She started rubbing her face onto it and eating a little bit. Then she got a little crazy playing and running so I thought this was the catnip effect . After seeing my kitty going crazy over the catnip I went to my bedroom to finish some work so I stayed there for about 30 minutes and after that, I decided to get a glass of water so I went back to the kitchen. Oh, boy, did I get surprised Sophie had used the carpet as a litter box and did a big pee, I couldnt believe it. My Sophie doing this? Urinating on the carpet? Really? The only connection to this behavior was the catnip so I started researching and I found several cat owners commenting on forums that their cats pee right in front of them after having catnip!

The Effects Of Catnip On Your Cat

tags

Cats love catnip. And it’s perfectly safe – there’s nothing in it that can harm your cat. If by some chance your cat was to eat a large amount of catnip, it could cause a mild tummy upset, but that’s not likely to happen.

What is Catnip?

Catnip is a perennial herb of the mint family. It originated in Northern Africa and the Mediterranean but now commonly grows wild throughout Europe and North America. The plant’s nicknames, catnip, catmint or catwort are no doubt inspired by cat’s well-known taste for the plants.

Why do cats love it?

The active compound in catnip is nepetalactone. Cats detect this compound by smell. It’s generally thought that the nepetalactone mimics the effect of a cat pheromone, possibly associated with mating.

Catnip acts as a natural mood enhancer. It might make your cat act quite unusually she may become more kittenish or particularly affectionate. She may also roll, paw or rub her face in the source of the catnip. Or she may jump about and become frisky, running from room to room appearing to chase invisible prey.

Some cats will just become very relaxed and stare into space. All of this behaviour may be marked by a lot of mewing or growling. The effects of catnip are short, usually lasting between 5 to 15 minutes. After that it will be a couple of hours before a cat will demonstrate the effects of catnip again.

Catnip: Toys And Training

How to use CatNip for your Pets!

Because cats do respond to catnip again and again, the herb can be a powerful training aid.

Want to keep kitty from clawing furniture? Rub a scratching post with catnip to make it more appealing. Bought a new cat bed? Sprinkle a little of the herb on kitty’s cushion to make it more attractive to your feline friend.

You can also provide enrichment for an indoor kitty by creating catnip toys. Sprinkle a bit of the herb into an old sock, then knot the top. Or put a big pinch of catnip in a small paper bag and crush the bag into a tight ball.

Continued

The intensity of kitty’s response to toys and training will be affected by the type of catnip you use. While most cats enjoy the herb dried or fresh, they’re usually less interested in catnip sprays, which generally don’t contain enough nepetalactone to appeal to most felines.

Fortunately for kitty, catnip — which is non-addictive and safe to eat — is easy to grow in a sunny window. You can even go so far as to create your own kitty garden with one pot of catnip and one of wheat, oat, rye, or barley grass. Not only will kitty enjoy both, but having its own house plants may keep kitty out of yours. If you plant catnip directly in the garden, remember that, like most mints, it’s a vigorous, sometimes invasive, grower.

Catnip’s potency doesn’t last forever the essential oils quickly dissipate. So if you buy dried catnip for your feline friend, store what you don’t use in the freezer.

Not All Cats Respond To Catnip

The literature states that up to half of cats do not respond or react to catnip. This ability to smell or not smell catnip is hereditary.

Kittens do not respond to catnip until they are at least 9 weeks old. Some cats need to be older before they get pleasure from catnip.

In some cats, catnip is found to be a depressant rather than a stimulant. Its possible that more cats respond to catnip than previously thought.

In a recent study, researchers hypothesized that the cats who were exposed to catnip and simply reclined or maintained a sphinx-like position may have actually been in a hallucinogenic state.

Interestingly, one study found that cats who did not pick up on the catnip scent responded positively to silver vine or Tatarian honeysuckle . These plants also contain nepetalactone.

Does Catnip Make Cats Hallucinate

If you have catnip and you are giving it to your cat you might be wondering if its crazy behavior is making it hallucinate or not, right?

Yes, it is believed that catnip does make cats hallucinate. This hallucinogenic experience is believed to be a visual and sonic experience for your cat. However, after several minutes this hallucinating stops, and then your cat is expected to become sleepy and relaxed.

So as you can see catnip does having a hallucinogenic effect but is closely followed by relaxation. So you may be wondering if this is regarded as cruelty, right?

How To Prepare Catnip For Cats

Catnip comes into two major forms, leaves and spray. The former is much more effective for almost all cats. This can be inhaled or consumed. The method of obtaining catnip will influence the results.

How your pet enjoys catnip influences the reaction. The traditional response to catnip rolling, playing, and verbalizing before relaxing comes from the scent. The smell of nepetalactone induces this reaction.

Catnip is also safe to swallow. This will likely amend the reaction, though. The cat will become drowsy and immediately relaxed. Eating catnip bypasses the playful stage and skips straight to bliss.

    Giving Your Cat Catnip Toys

  • 1Buy refillable toys. Instead of buying toys that are already filled or scented with catnip, purchase refillable toys at a pet store or online. Pre-filled toys may contain low-quality catnip that will lose its effectiveness quickly. You can fill refillable toys with good quality, organic catnip and continually replace it to make sure that the herb is always potent enough to have an effect on your cat.XResearch source
  • 2Make a simple sock toy. Make a simple catnip toy using a clean, stray sock. Add a pinch or two of catnip to the sock and seal it tightly with a knot. Replace catnip every week or so to ensure that it is potent.XResearch source
  • Alternatively, sew the top shut with a needle and thread.
  • 3Roll up a simple paper ball. Cats often amuse themselves by playing with everyday household items, so stick to the basics when giving catnip toys to your cat. Put a pinch of catnip into a small paper bag. Crush it into a tight ball for your cat to play with.XResearch source
  • Crush the bag into a tight enough ball that it can’t be opened up by your cat.

    What Exactly Is Catnip

Catnip, or nepeta cataria, is an herbaceous perennial. Dried catnip resembles oregano but is actually a member of the mint family. Native to Europe, Africa, and Asia, it was imported to North America and now grows like a wild weed in every region. It can even grow to be two or three feet high!

Fresh catnip has stems with heart-shaped leaves and can sprout small white, blue, pink, or lavender blooms. It does well in full sunlight and grows rather easily.

That means even people like me without a green thumb can probably manage it. You can clip the leaves and hang them to dry in a dark space to have your own stash of catnip on hand. Store it in a baggie in the fridge so it stays potent longer.

Just be sure to keep any catnip plants out of paws reach. While a little nibbling on the leaves probably wont harm your cat, the plant might not fair so well. Your cat could also knock the plant over and get hurt or dig around in the dirt and make a big mess that youll be left to clean up.
