New cat rescue to open in Grand Rapids

Several members from Zeta Theta Omega spent a few hours assisting with chores at the MMCR Albion House. We each got a chance to utilize our skills in order to help out together we cleaned cages, did laundry, performed office and clerical work, sorted cat treats, administered medications, and of course socialized the cats and kittens! While volunteering, we were able to interact with the wonderful cats at the Albion House, while learning all about their personalities and the MMCR organization as a whole. Our members had a great time being involved in such a great cause, and are excitedly planning a donation drive for the kitties!

Cat Rescue Acquires Physical Space

Courtesy Next Chapter Pet Rescue

A local women-owned nonprofit that rescues cats now has a physical location to help meet more needs.

The Next Chapter Pet Rescue recently acquired a space in a plaza at 6570 S. Division Ave. in Grand Rapids.

Led by an all-women board of directors, the organization opened in September 2021, and co-founders Amanda Mayville and Trina Davis-Dukes previously took care of cats in their own homes.

My co-founder has 20, I have six, and we have a foster/volunteer that has one, Mayville said. We will continue to have in-home foster volunteers in addition to our facility and more than likely still have some in our home as well that need more round-the-clock care.

The new space will give The Next Chapter Pet Rescue more capacity to take in cats, provide care and recruit volunteers.

Mayville said the physical location also will help with outreach and education.

With the new space, we hope to be able to do more fundraising and also educate people on spaying and neutering and the damaging effects of declawing, Mayville said.

Mayville said her interest in animal rescue sparked after connecting with a pet group on Facebook and doing some volunteer work.

Mayville said she hopes more people will appreciate the hard work animal care workers do.

Be kind to animal care workers, Mayville said. Showing kindness and compassion will help get more of this important work done.

Renovations of the new space are underway, with a grand opening planned for May 1.

Reuben’s Room Cat Rescue Grand Rapids Mi

Cat for adoption

Grand Rapids is home to Reuben’s Room Cat Rescue, a no-kill animal sanctuary that’s got an edge to it in that it deals with cats, and nothing but. That makes it very unique. While there are no shortage of stray and feral cats in Michigan, there’s also no denying that it’s hard to find places for these cats. Dating back to 2003, however, Reuben’s Room is ready to take them in hand. Online listings show who’s available for adoption right now, allowing users to scout the landscape before going in.

New Cat Rescue To Open In Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. A new cat rescue is opening on Aug. 1 in West Michigan with the goal of giving local cats a second chance at life.

Second Chance Cats of West Michigan is a newly found nonprofit that aims to help cats find their forever homes. Its located near the corner of Knapp Street and Fuller Avenue in Grand Rapids.

The owners say they saw a need for an adoption center in the area after a couple of local cat rescues ended their programs.

Were willing to take on the tougher cases because we truly believe that all these cats deserve a home, whatever their past is were willing to work with them to get them to the point where they can be happy in a loving home, said co-founder Laura Moody.

Cat Rescue Grand Rapids

Second Chance Cats of West Michigan opening adoption center in Grand Rapids

Please note that we do not take cats in from the public.

Here at Second Chance Cats , our mission is to help cats at municipal shelters who are at risk for euthanasia, or cats who have special/medical needs that shelters have a hard time managing. Because we are primarily working with area shelters and rescues, we, unfortunately, are not able to take stray cats off the streets or cats that need to be re-homed. We are a small, volunteer-based facility, and we simply dont have the space to quarantine new arrivals at our adoption center. We ask that people please do not bring outside cats into our adoption center this facility is for cats who are ready to be adopted into their forever homes. We wish that we were able to help every cat in need, but it simply is not possible and we are doing our best to stick to our mission of giving second chances to at-risk cats. If you have found a stray or have a cat that needs to be re-homed, please contact Kent County Animal Shelter or Humane Society of West Michigan both wonderful resources in our community that can help with these kinds of needs.

Footsteps In The Sand: Remembering The Life Of Sarah Vicary

Sarah has given her life so selflessly to the work she’s done and it means so much to her family to see so many who care so deeply about her. It is with a broken heart that I write to you to say that Sarah passed over the rainbow bridge to heaven on 10/29/19. She fought hard throughout the last four years of illness and is at rest now.

In the last 16 years Sarah built MMCR with her blood, sweat & tears. Over 10,000 cats have been saved, loved, cared for and had a chance because of her. The cats that no one else wanted, the ones that no one else would take a chance on. Sarah devoted her life to them and she loved them dearly. Every single one of you that showed up through the years to help–with your time, your money and your heart–you meant the world to Sarah. As Sarah would’ve said it “you rock!”

*footsteps in the sand* Sarah left deep footsteps through this world. She still needs us, we can still lift her up & let her work carry on through us. “To save a life is the most amazing thing you can do.” Sarah was always making a plan, always chasing the next dream on how she could do more good work, make more of a difference, save more lives. Rest in peace Sarah. We love you.

Please take a minute … light a candle, remember Sarah and all that she’s done, maybe ask her to watch over any loved furbabies you have lost over the rainbow bridge, hug your loved ones tight and of course kiss your kitties. Continue to keep Sarah’s family in your prayers and thoughts.

Mosh Pit Rescue Mission Statement

Cat-based rescue, focused on adoption, opening in Grand Rapids

#rescuelocal #adoptlocal #dosomething #petsarefamily #NOMV #adoptdontshop #pittiekitties

Mosh Pit Rescue was founded in 2017 with the goal of fostering and adopting out older male pit bulls and pit bull advocacy. That mission quickly expanded and MPR now works with all kinds of dogs, kittens, cats, and rarely even a bunny. We had no idea the unbelievable need for cat rescue in Grand Rapids. As of 2021 our focus has shifted almost entirely to cats and extreme medical cases pulled out of shelters.

We are a Grand Rapids/West Michigan 5013. We pull the majority of our adoptable dogs and cats out of local West Michigan shelters and prefer the major medical cases the shelters cannot handle without rescue transfer.

Once pulled, we focus on animal rehab, recovery, rehoming, fostering, adopting, training and other shelter support.

We believe in spay/neuter – period. With rare exception, all other pets in the household must be fixed for an adoption application to be considered . Reach out to us if true financial need is preventing you from fixing your pets and we will assist to the best of our ability.

Our adoption bios are written honestly without a lot of fluff as we intend to match our adoptables with the best home, not the first one we can find with flowery language. Bios are written with deliberate care and with honesty.

We are not here to make it easier for owners to abandon animals.

Mission Statement

Here at Second Chance Cats, our mission is to help cats at municipal shelters who are at risk for euthanasia, or cats who have special/medical needs that shelters have a hard time managing.

Description

Welcome to Second Chance Cats of West Michigan! We are a new nonprofit cat rescue based in Grand Rapids. Our goal is to give cats in need of a little more time, patience, care, and understanding, a second chance at living a full and healthy life. Whether this is medical attention or the time and space to learn to trust again. We will not give up on these living souls. We have an all-volunteer staff, and we work closely within the community to reach all cats at risk. We are advocates for felines. Help us give these kitties a second chance for a happy and meaningful life!

Why Should You Adopt

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
