Was Your Pet Food Recalled

Hill’s Science Diet Sensitive Stomach & Skin Cat Food | Chewy

That year marked another important milestone, the launch of the first Science Diet recipe: Hills Science Diet Adult Maintenance Dog Food.

Originally, Science Diet was developed as optimal nutrition for research animals. Science Diet was great for periods of stress in this unique animal population, according to a magazine ad from 1973, which announced that the dog food was being released to the general public on a limited basis.

Here is that ad:

Animal Cavalcade

Hills Science Diet has long been positioned as a science-based, clinically proven, vet-recommended diet. Jen Wrye, PhD, a sociologist with expertise in food studies and animalhuman relations, described the marketing strategy this way in her 2012 doctoral thesis:

The prominence of science in the name and the sterile-looking bags conjure up images of white-coated scientists working in laboratories to unlock secrets of animal nutrition.

Colgate-Palmolive Acquisition

In 1976, Colgate-Palmolive purchased Riviana Foods, which included its highly profitable Hills Pet Nutrition subsidiary, in a deal valued at about $180 million.

The new parent corporation set about expanding Hills product reach into 86 countries. By 1999, Hills Pet Nutrition had cleared over $1 billion in sales.

It was, for decades, an excellent investment for Colgate-Palmolive. Although that corporation is better known for dish soap and toothpaste, one-seventh of the companys profits came from the sale of pet food.

Who Produces Hills Cat Food

Hills has undergone a massive metamorphosis since its humble beginnings as a rendering service in Kansas. Theyve become an international corporation with products being sold in 86 countries around the globe.

Today, Hills is owned by the Colgate-Palmolive company a purchase that took place in 1976. Despite being owned by such a massive corporation, Hills still produces all of its food in company-owned manufacturing plants in the United States.

Different Types Of Sensitive Stomach Dog Food: Pros And Cons

There are a lot of misconceptions about feeding dry vs. wet food diets. One is that wet food is worse for your pets teeth. Dry or wet food doesnt have any effect on dental health.

Wet food for sensitive stomach diets that work for your pet wont worsen your pets diarrhea just because of the moisture. The ingredients in wet food still help gut health and firm stool.

What Is Sensitive Stomach In Cats

Cats can have problems with their stomachs that includes sensitivities to certain food or additives in the food. It can cause them to get sick after they eat, experience discomfort, or stop eating because they don’t want to feel sick. Common causes of a sensitive stomach in cats include but are not limited to:

  • Allergies – Cats can have food allergies just like humans can, and eating the foods that cause the allergic reaction can cause sensitivities. It can cause itching, a dull coat, vomiting, gas, bloating, and pain.
  • Diet Changes – Younger cats can have sensitive stomach due to the fact that they’re still developing, and diet changes can cause an upset stomach for a few weeks. This is why you’re supposed to gradually transition your cat from one food to the next over the course of a week.
  • Feeding Behavior – As your cat gets outside and hunts like cats naturally do, they can eat a lot of things that can upset their stomachs. This can make them more sensitive to the food they eat, and you can find it difficult to feed them something that won’t cause them to throw up.
  • Hairball – If cats tend to eat a lot of hair from grooming, it can actually shift how their system digests food. This can result in more throwing up because it’s easier for the cat’s system to get rid of the hairball this way rather than passing it.

Hills Science Diet For Adults With Sensitive Stomach & Skin

Chicken and Rice Recipe for Sensitive Stomach and Skin is another unquestionable hit on Hill’s lineup. Prebiotic fiber is one factor of success that helps your kitty develop a healthy gut microflora. The kibble is full of healthy ingredients that promote easy digestion and omega acids invaluable for a lustrous fur coat.

Keep in mind that most recipes in this Hill’s Science Diet review contain rice, corn, wheat, and other grain-based sources of carbs along with soy for increased protein content. If your tabby has a proven history of sensitivity towards these products, or you believe carnivores should not eat grains, look for alternatives, which I’ll talk about in the last section of this overview.

Which Cats And Owners Might Do Better With A Different Brand

Even though Hills makes food to fit any feline, they arent the perfect fit for everyone. In reality, theres no accounting for a cats preferences. Some picky eaters might not be interested in Hills, even if you try several varieties. That said, weve also had good luck getting picky eaters to eat Hills when they wouldnt eat other foods, so it can go either way.

The other thing that might turn you off from Hills cat food is the price. These are marketed as premium pet foods and theyre accompanied by a premium price tag. Expect to pay quite a bit more to feed your cat Hills than youd spend on other brands of food.

Has Hills Science Diet Ever Been Recalled

Yes. Hills Science Diet has been recalled a number of times in recent years.

Most recently, in , Hills Pet Nutrition issued a massive, worldwide recall of 33 different varieties of its canned dog foods 22 million cans recalled in all because of toxic levels of Vitamin D, which Hills blamed on a supplier error.

The recall included both the Hills Science Diet and Hills Prescription Diet brand lines. However, no dry foods, cat foods or pet treats were included in the recall.

Reportedly hundreds of dogs died after eating the affected dog food. Families who spoke with Petful told us their dogs had been in good health, but then, within a matter of days, their pets well-being took a severe downturn, ending in kidney problems, kidney failure and, in some cases, death.

We believe that hundreds, if not thousands, of pets have died or become seriously ill as a result of eating Hills foods with toxic levels of Vitamin D, attorney Nyran Rose Rasche told CBS News.

Following an investigation into that recall, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration published a warning letter stating that Hills had failed to follow its own procedures. A systematic failure of your food safety plan occurred that resulted in the recall of canned dog food, the FDA said.

The FDA ordered Hills to take corrective actions and put the company on notice of future inspections.

Hills Science Diet Feline Adult Sensitive Stomach & Skin ...

While seemingly boring and basic, Chicken Recipe is a beloved best-seller for a reason. It’s great in any form, wet or dry, and formulated for any age, kitten, grown-up, or senior. I’ve read hundreds of positive Hill’s Science Diet reviews, and I wouldn’t mind feeding this to my cat. However, I always urge you to start with the smallest packaging available to let your kitty taste-test the new food before making the final switch.

Surprisingly, Hill’s no wheat, soy, and corn line, Chicken and Brown Rice Recipe, is universally hated by felines and pet owners. Most picky eaters steer clear of this kibble, regardless of their age. Some tabbies even develop digestive problems after partaking in this formula. Youthful Vitality Chicken & Vegetable Entrée is another formula that would go up in flames if it were up to cat owners. The thing is too dry for many kitties, and the carrot turns them away in most cases. There are much better options in Hill’s selection for senior tabbies.

If you’re looking for the same benefits Hill’s Science cat food possesses, like scientifically based component selection, but want more variety when it comes to taste selection, Royal Canin is your answer. With over a hundred feline-centric products, it’s a brand for my own heart despite the claims its ingredients list is not suited for a carnivore diet. Check out my analytical and personal take on this brand.

One of the customer reviews that we have found, Maddie, spoke about her beloved Goldens struggle with having diarrhea for months. Maddie had put her dog on a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice and was in and out of the Vets office, unable to resolve her GI upset. Maddies golden became lethargic over time and would sleep all day. She said on the last visit that she had almost reached a sum of over 600 dollars. Her Veterinarian had recommended Hills Sensitive Stomach and Skin diet, and within days of starting it, her stool became firm. She was back to her bright and happy Golen self. Maddie wrote, I will keep her on only Hills Diets. For now, it will save me the hefty Vet bills.

Hills Science Diet Adult Perfect Digestion is nonprescription dog food, that customers rave about. This customer said in their review that they had a year old Goldendoodle who had recurrent loose stool and occasional episodes of vomiting bile. Like the sensitive stomach and skin diet, this Hills science diet is not a prescription food, which means its less costly than most of the previously listed diets for sensitive stomachs. In theory, its in the same price range as the sensitive skin diet. It deserves the most budget-friendly diet for all of its added value. To help form stool, it contains prebiotics, whole grain oats, and pumpkin. Hills Perfect Digestion dry food contains Vitamin C to help boost your pets energy and immune system. The antioxidant is also great for reducing inflammation. Vitamin E is in this food as well. Hills said that when wild-caught salmon is accessible, they use that in the food as the primary protein source. There are still chicken products in the ingredients. To be safe, you might want to steer clear of this product for pets with chicken food sensitivity.

You might wonder why this food is not the best overall diet due to its ingredients and affordability? Its a new product. This food has only been on the market for a little over a year. There are just client reviews, and most of them have discovered it on their own. So far, though, all of the reviews have been great!
