Dental And Health Issues
Did you know that about 70 percent of cats suffer from periodontal disease by the time they’re three years old? Dental problems are very common with felines. Tooth decay can drive your kitty nuts!
The constant pain is unbearable. So, they start chewing away to get some relief. If this is the case, take your cat to a vet for proper dental treatment!
Some health issues can also cause chewing. Metabolic conditions like hyperthyroidism increase your cat’s activity level. They get a bit hyperactive and start looking for things to chew. Again, this issue requires some medical attention to resolve.
Spray The Cord With Bitter Apple Spray
Putting bitter apple spray, hot sauce, or even some sort of citrus scent on electrical cords may help deter your cat from chewing on them. Cats don’t like these tastes and smells.
Approach this technique with caution, however. You want to be careful that you do not put too much substance on the cord.
Your Kitten Is Stressed And Needs To Chew On Things
Maybe your kitten just had a rough day and needs to chew or suck on things. Your fur baby needs an outlet for the stress and will sometimes chew on your cords or cables.
Normally, when kittens who are still with their mothers are stressed, they find her and start nursing and kneading their mama. This behavior is a stress reliever, and if they dont have that, they will find something that reminds them of mom and start nursing.
You might want to buy some soft chew toys for your kitten to help it deal with stressful situations, such as a catnip-infused mouse toy or a string-like toy that wont come apart when chewed on. Dangling feathers might also distract your kitten enough to stop it from chewing on the cords.

I know it will seem silly but to learn how to get a kitten to stop chewing cords, you really need to see what your kitten sees. And how do you do that? Get down on all fours just like your kitten. Doing so may even help you find other risks you were not aware of.
While you crawl around, remember your kitten is most likely 1/10th your size, which means it can squeeze through tight places and bite cords. Can you see any spaces like that? If so, then it is important to block and cover those spaces.

Is Chewing Normal For Cats
Chewing is a common behavior in cats, but that doesnt mean its something that can or should be ignored.
Whether chewing is normal is all relative to the cat, his health, and his level of activity, Gouge says. It becomes excessive when it interferes with other activities or is self-injurious.
Its important to rule out an underlying medical problem, such as gum disease or gastrointestinal problems, that could be causing your cats chewing, Jones adds. They could be trying to relieve themselves of pain or discomfort, or theyre calling to you, trying to bring your attention to problems like these, she says. Redness of the gums can be a sign of a dental problem, while Jones says excessive salivating or licking may indicate that your cats stomach is acting up.
Behavioral problems can also be associated with destructive chewing, says Dr. Jennifer Coates, veterinary advisor for petMD and author of Dictionary of Veterinary Terms: Vet-speak Deciphered for the Non-Veterinarian. Cats need mental stimulation and physical exercise to keep them from becoming bored, anxious, frustrated, or stressed. If they dont have enough to do, theyll find an outlet for all that mental and physical energy themselvesand you may not like the results.
In any of these cases, you should consult with your vet to treat the underlying problem. When the issue clears up, the chewing should either go away or lessen in frequency.

Improve Your Cats Diet
Improving your cats diet by adding foods rich in digestible fiber can reduce the chewing activity of cats with nutritional deficiencies. Healthy foods include:
- Cat greens
- Lettuce
- Peas
Cats rarely eat these foods freely, so mix them into your pets regular food to mask the taste and smell, enabling it to consume these essential nutrients.
If you have a long-haired cat, hairball formula diets or supplements can help uncomfortable hairballs sweep through the system instead of getting stuck. Hairballs can also drive the urge to chew on inedible objects, and cats sometimes need a helping hand getting rid of them.
How To Get Your Cat To Stop Biting Cords
Cats should never bite electrical cords, but some felines develop a problematic chewing habit. Not only can cats get electrocuted and endure painful burns, but high voltage electric shocks can result in cardiac arrest and death. If your cat chews a live cord, it could even start a house fire. Its a dangerous habit that needs to be stopped.
To prevent cats from biting electrical cords, cover them with a PVC or rubber tube. Cats hate the smell of citrus fruits, lavender, and foods such as cayenne pepper, garlic, and mint. Create a paste and spread it on the cords, or dilute these ingredients in water and lightly spray them underneath the wires. Play with your cat more often, and provide other chew toys and accessories. Another tactic is to hide the cords so that your cat cant reach them.
Cats chew cords out of boredom, stress, pica, OCD, and dental issues. Providing a healthy living environment and making sure that your petts happy can also deter your cat from biting cords.
- Cardiac arrest
- Sudden death
The severity of the electric shock your cat receives depends on the voltage and how long the electrocution lasts. A mild shock will cause pain or discomfort, but a severe shock from a high voltage may cause cardiac arrest.
Your cats also at risk of burns to the mouth, lips, and tongue, making it difficult for the animal to eat and drink. The affected tissues could even die, affecting your cat long-term.

Stopping Unwanted Chewing Behaviors
Sometimes, the simplest idea is the best. If you want to prevent your cat from chewing on your personal items, put them out of reach.
Make sure string, yarn, and twine is not left out, Gouge says. Protect your plants with wire fencing.
You can also use furniture and carpets to block off access to wires and certain corners of your house where you may keep something thats tempting to your cats chewing instinct, Jones says. If thats not possible, she suggests using lemon, cayenne, rosemary, or another scent that cats find unappealing to deter them.
Jones says clicker training is a great way to teach your cat that it pays to walk away from something rather than chew it. That said, it can be a time-consuming process because you may need to train for multiple objects.
An easier way to modify chewing behavior is to simply provide your cat with ample exercise and enrichment, including appropriate objects to chew on.
Especially when it comes to indoor-only cats, it’s important to provide them outlets to expend their energy in healthy, interactive ways each day, Gouge says. This can include grooming them, letting them chase stuffed mice or balls, and giving them access to perches to watch birds or squirrels outside, among other things. Cat toys and treats designed for chewing are available through many retailers. Cat grass is another good option, since many cats who like to chew also like to graze.
Nutrient Poor Or Nutrient Deficient Diet
In some cases, cats will chew on things because they are not getting enough nutrients from the food they eat.
For example, an insufficient amount of vitamins, minerals, protein, and other nutrients can increase your cat’s risk of dental problems. This may contribute to a dental health issue, as discussed above.
A nutrient deficient diet may also impair your cat’s physical, cognitive, and immune health, all of which may trigger chewing behaviors.

My Cat Wont Stop Chewing Cords
If youve tried all the prevention methods and your cat still chews through cords, its time to take it to the vet. Thats because your cat likely has a health condition, whether mental or physical. If so, no amount of prevention will stop your cat from biting cords.
Also, if you cant find a way to hide them or keep them out of your cats reach, it will chew them while your backs turned or when youre away from home. This creates a fire hazard and a significant health risk to your cat.
Biting cables is a bad habit for your cat to get into. Not only does it destroy your items, but your cats at risk of getting seriously hurt. To stop this, divert its attention away from cables and do everything you can to hide cables away. If you leave no chance for your cat to get to them, theres no way your cat can get hurt.

Cats are adorable animals, and they make great pets. Cats are great because they are very independent animals. They clean and groom themselves, and they use a litter box, so cats don’t need to be walked regularly the way that dogs do. While cats make excellent pets, they tend to be mischievous at times. Kittens are very mischievous, and many cats can be as well.
Cats get into plenty of things, and many like to chew on electrical cords. Unfortunately, this can be very dangerous. Chewing on wires can be a choking hazard and can cause oral burns or electrocution, which can be deadly.
