If a bacterial infection is discovered, your veterinarian may prescribe antibiotics. As kittens are still building up their immune systems, it is essential to give the antibiotics exactly as prescribed in order to adequately treat the infection. Otherwise, an infection may return, or your kitten may become resistant to that particular antibiotic.
Medication for Parasites
The signs of a parasite are not always specific, but once discovered, treatment should be prompt in order to present worsening of a kitten’s condition or the spread to others including fellow kittens and even humans. Your veterinarian will order specific medication to treat the parasite, and this medication, like antibiotics, must be used as prescribed. Inadequate mothering by the feline mother is a leading risk factor for fading kitten syndrome. Most foster kittens are subject to this risk factor in the extreme, since they were orphaned or abandoned by their mothers. Even kittens with mothers in the picture may be at risk if the mother is inexperienced, unable to produce sufficient milk, unwilling to let the kittens nurse, stressed, malnourished or, paradoxically, obese.

Usually, kitten bottles are hard to find at a regular store. If one can’t find a kitten bottle, it’s best to look for a child’s syringe. Look for a syringe that goes up to 10 MLS. If the kitten survives and gets olds, it will be able to suck on the syringe itself without one having to push on the depressor portion. Some kittens don’t do well with bottles, so syringes are a great alternative. Enter the syringe from the side of a kittenâs mouth. An active kitten may try to push the syringe away. There are many factors that contribute to fading puppy syndrome. Some of the more common factors include:

- lack of milk production or poor-quality milk

- congenital defects in the puppy, which may not be immediately apparent
- low birth weight
- infectious causes
One or more of these factors can contribute to fading puppy syndrome. For example, a lack of mothering instinct coupled with poor hygiene can often result in neonatal septicemia in a very short time. Although some maternal immunity is conferred to the puppy while it is developing in the mother’s uterus, the majority of this immunity is acquired via the colostrum or ‘first milk’. If the puppy does not drink an adequate amount of this first milk, it is more vulnerable to infection. 1. Assess the situation.
Dont assume that a litter of kittens is orphaned just because you dont see the mom. Its common for the mother to leave her babies, so give the kittens a bit of distance and see if the mom returns. If she does great! The mom is the best suited to care for them, so leave them with her If the mom does not return within an hour or two, it is time for you to step in and help.
2. Dont take the kittens to a shelter.
Unless your local shelter specifically has a program for neonatal kittens, bringing an orphaned kitten to a shelter is a death sentence. The majority of shelters do not provide care to unweaned kittens, so if you want them to have a shot, its going to be your responsibility to help them yourself, or to find someone who can.
3. Dont panic but do act quickly.
4. Gather the appropriate supplies.
