Distinguishing Males From Females Is Tricky

Kittens: How to know if it’s a boy or girl
  • Email

Kitten genitals are not as developed as adult cats, making gender determination a crapshoot. At first glance, even professionals find it tricky to distinguish a female kitten from a male. However, a few characteristic differences can be observed in kittens as young as five weeks oldgenital spacing, coat color, and behaviorindicating their sex.

I Have Just Adopted A Second Cat And I Want To Maximize The Chance Of Successful Integration What Should I Do

Integration should always be done slowly and with care. Set up a separate area of the house for the new cat, and provide bedding, feeding and elimination stations, and exercise stations.

First, watch for signs of stress:

  • Hiding
  • Walking crouched and hugging walls
  • Moving away/avoidance
  • Hair standing up along the back
  • Puffed tail

Are Males More Aggressive

No, the gender of the ladybug has nothing to do with how aggressive or harmful the insect it. In fact, Ladybugs are pretty harmless creatures and dont usually leave any lasting effects on humans. They mostly prey on insects, mites, and aphids. There is no difference between the two genders in how they locate or eat prey.

How To Tell If A Cat Is Male Or Female

If you have a newborn kitten or if you find a cat in the street and adopt it, it is common to want to know what gender it is. For cubs, pups and other young litters, it is not as easy to tell as it is in fully grown cats or other animals, such as dogs. Therefore, it’s useful to know how to tell for both mature and immature animals. On OneHowTo.com we’ll explain how to tell if a cat is male or female.

The first step we must follow to tell if a cat is male or female is to pick up the cat and put it on its back with its bottom facing towards you so that you can check its genitals, which are close to this area.

For female cats, it’s easy to recognize because the vulva is located just behind the anus. Although they are separate, there is no gap between them. You’ll see a small line that is not swollen, like the one seen in the picture. You’ll notice that it looks a little bit like a punctuation mark.

For male cats, the genitals are also behind the anus, but they are separated from the anus by the testicles followed by the penis which stands out. However, in newborn kittens the penis is very small and is inside the foreskin, so you might identify it from two small holes that looks a little bit like this punctuation mark:

Male and female cats and kittens look and act similarly, so it can be difficult to tell what sex they are just by watching their behavior. If you know what to look for, however, there are several key differences that will allow you to differentiate between the sexes. Newborn kittens will have immature genitalia, so wait until the cats are a few weeks old to determine their sex.

How To Tell The Sex Of A Ladybug

Male and female ladybugs both have a lot of similarities between them. Its a bit difficult to tell them apart just by looking at them in your garden .

Of course, an obvious time would be whilst they are actually mating. But otherwise, one way you can usually tell between the two is by looking at their sizes. This is easier when you see a male and a female side by side.

The female ladybug tends to be slightly larger than its male counterpart. Further, in certain species, the male ladybugs have slightly longer antennae. An example of this kind of species is the Asian Lady Beetle also called the orange ladybug. You can read more on this species of ladybugs in my article Orange Ladybugs What They Are. They May Not Even Be Ladybugs.

Although its difficult to differentiate between a male and a female ladybug just by looking at it, it becomes much easier to do under a microscope. Here are a few characteristics which show up in the two genders once you put the ladybugs under a microscope.

In fact, sometimes it helps to be an Entomologist orColeopterologist to understand the differences, but try the exercise anyway and you should be able to spot some of the differences in certain areas.

Male Vs Female Cat: What Are The Differences

For new cat parents, there are many choices to make before bringing your new feline friend into your home, one of which is deciding whether to get a male or female cat. Both male and female cats make great companions, but there can be some differences between the two. Many cat parents may develop a preference for one or the other. In this article we will explore the differences between male and female cats to help new cat parents make an informed decision about which one they might prefer.

More specifically, we will be exploring the differences between neutered male cats and spayed female cats. It is important to note that cats that are not spayed or neutered may have very different and more problematic behaviors. According to the ASPCA, unaltered male cats can be more aggressive, more likely to urine mark in the house, and more likely to escape from the house in order to find female cats in heat and defend their territory. Unaltered female cats are more likely to vocalize excessively and will attract male cats from all over the neighborhood when they are in heat. For these reasons, along with pet overpopulation issues, it is recommended to get your cat spayed or neutered. Spaying and neutering often reduces the behavioral differences between male and female cats, and it will make your life much easier while having cats in your house . Now, lets discuss the differences between fixed male and female cats.

  • Place the kitten on its front on a soft non-slip surface like a towel.
  • Lift up the kittens tail so that you can visually inspect the perineal area .
  • Both male and female kittens have two orifices in the perineal area. The top opening is the anus, and the lower opening is the genital opening: penis or the vulva . The key characteristic to note is the shape of the genital opening.

How To Tell The Sex Of A Kitten: Examining The Genitals

How to tell male and female kittens apart

Many breeders describe the appearance of male and female kittens genitals as punctuation marks. We know this sounds a bit odd, but bear with us!

A male kittens genitals look a little like a colon. The round anus sits at the top, with a gap between the anus and another rounded opening for the penis. Between the two sits the scrotal sac. This will be very small in young kittens, but its still possible to feel the testicles if you palpate this area gently. You should feel two small oval-shaped testes underneath the skin.

As a male kitten develops, it becomes easier to see and feel the testes as they grow in size.

Female kittens genitals look more like an upside-down exclamation mark. The round anus sits at the top and is closely followed by the vaginal slit.

The gap between the genital opening and the anus is more pronounced in male kittens than females. You may find that as you examine different kittens, it becomes easier to tell the difference between males and females.

How Do You Tell If A Kitten Is A Boy Or Girl

Answer:

It takes a few weeks at least for the kitten’s genitals to develop enough so you can tell the sex. Check the distance between the anus and the genital opening- close together for a girl and further apart for a boy. Also the boy will have more a round genital opening and the girl more slit like. As they get older it gets easier as testicles will appear between the anus and the gentials in the boys. If you are unsure, get a vet to check.

Answer:

Hold the kitten so its back end is facing you. Its tail will go up this is just what you want to happen so you can make a determination.

See if you can make the determination by using what is called the “colon or semicolon” rule. If the animal is a male, the area below its tail should resemble a colon if it is a female, the area should represent a semi-colon .

See if the urinary area and anus are close together if so, it is a female. In male kittens, the urinary area and anus are not close together, and an undeveloped scrotum may be visible.

Fun fact: calico and tortoiseshell cats are almost always females because those color patterns are caused by sex-linked genes. Similarly, about 3 in 4 orange tabby cats are always male.

Leave The Kittens Alone For The First Few Weeks

When kittens are under a month old, its best to leave them with their mother. Taking a kitten away for too long can be distressing for the kitten and their mother cat. Some mother cats may abandon their kittens if theyre handled too often.

As kittens get used to your presence, you may be able to start handling them at 2 weeks old, but its safer to wait until theyre 4 weeks old, if possible. Its also extremely difficult to tell the gender of a kitten under 4 weeks old, so you may be putting both the mother cat and the kittens under unnecessary distress.

Sexing Cats Based On Genitals

The only really reliable way to determine a cats sex is to look at the genitals. This is easier in older cats. In very young kittens, the males and females can be quite hard to distinguish if you dont know what youre looking for.

To see the cats genitals, youll need to gently lift up the tail. If the cat is relaxed and amenable to being handled, this is easy enough. Its a good idea to sit down with the cat on your lap, so you wont drop the animal if things dont go well. If the cat doesnt co-operate with you lifting the tail, try scratching the animals back at the base of the tail. This often causes the cat to lift up its tail instinctively.

A more nervous or hostile cat can be tricky to handle its better to have someone else hold the cat while you perform the examination. It might be necessary to wrap the cat in a towel or blanket.

A male cat will have a scrotum and penis located just below the anus. In an entire tom, the testicles will also be visible. Neutered toms still have scrota, but theyre smaller and less pronounced. A female cat will only have an anus and vagina.

Whatever the cats sex, its important that the cat be spayed or neutered as soon as possible. Your vet can advise you on whether the cat is old enough for the procedure. Its usually carried out at around five months, but may be performed earlier in some cases. De-sexing cats makes them happier and easier to care for, as well as protecting them against various diseases.
