She Goes In Estrus Or Heat
Although, this may not be the most pleasant way to tell if your cat is fixed, it is reliable in the results. However, the estrus of a cat has many factors that can determine when and if she will come into heat. These include;
- Time of year. Most females are more likely to come into heat from the spring to autumn months when theres more daylight.
- House Cats. Your indoor-only cat under intermittent lighting will have an unpredictable heat-cycle.
- Artificial Lighting & Estrus. Females left under artificial lighting can begin estrus at any time.
How long does estrus last and how many times will she go through it?
Again this greatly depends on the age, health and environment of your cat. Generally females will go in and out of heat several times during the breeding season. The estrus itself can last anywhere from 1 day to 7 days and she can go back into heat every 1 to 2 weeks after her cycle has finished.
What are the signs of Estrus?
There are many common signs of your cat beginning a heat. These include;
- Long drawn out calls many times each day
- She moves her tail to the side with her rear end in the air
- Rolling on the ground and wailing
- Excessive licking of her private parts
- Swelling of vulva
- Trying to escape the home
What To Expect After The Spay
Some veterinarians choose to keep a newly spayed cat overnight, to minimize their movement. If the spay is done in the morning, the cat may be ready to go home the same day. In either case, your cat may be a little groggy the first night, and may not be interested in eating. This is a normal reaction. They should be more alert the next day. Their appetite should also return to normal within a day or two.
Some cats experience some soreness the first few days after the procedure, so pain medication is typically sent home. It is not unusual for owners to see discharge coming from the incision site. When this is noted, it is important to have this assessed by your veterinarian. Some cats may require additional treatments like antibiotics. An Elizabethan collar may be sent home, to keep them from licking which may cause irritation, infection, and sometimes opening of the incision site.
Additional Costs To Consider
If your cat is fully up to date on shots and healthy, you might only have to pay for the surgeryand possibly a sitting fee if you go to a vet.
However, if your cat isnt up to date on shots, all places will generally want you to receive boosters at that time. Booster shots for cats can range quite a bit, depending on the ones they need. Your cat should be up to date once every 3 years.
- Rabies $15 to $20
- Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis $30 to $60
- Feline Calicivirus $15 to $20
- Distemper $20 to $30
If your cat is already fully vaccinated, it wont be an issue for the surgery. However, you can accrue up to $130 in additional charges just for vaccine boosters.

Why Do Cats Urine Mark
Animal species who live in social groups in which the members depend on each other for survival have sophisticated interpersonal communication. Particularly animals who can cause significant harm to each otherlike dogshave developed a social mechanism for preventing conflict through interpersonal ranking. They are prepared to assume either a leadership or deference position, and they can read another animals body language to interpret his intentions and react accordingly. But cats have a somewhat unique social structure in that they do not hunt, eat or sleep in groups like dogs.
Given the opportunity, cats go off on their own when they mature and claim certain areas or territories for themselves. They might share a territory with other cats, but its a time-share approachthey avoid each other whenever possible. They havent developed a social system or a communication system like dogs. Socially, cats who greet often handle things like two neighbors in an argumentalthough one might back down if he thinks he might get injuredneither individual will ever perceive himself as having lower status than the other. Cats have no system for working out face-to-face disputes, so face-to-face disputes can be dangerous for them. To avoid disputes, cats communicate indirectlythey leave messages.

Causes Of Breast Cancer In Cats
Breast cancer is a multifactorial disease, meaning it has many causes- and many of them are not fully understood. Studies have shown that hormones are partially to blame- as with dogs, neutering at a young age rather than allowing heat cycles massively reduces the risk of mammary neoplasia in cats.
Some medications that mimic or include hormones have the same effect on;breast tissue;as natural hormones do. These medications are rarely used in modern medicine but may have had an effect in the past.
Retroviruses have also been isolated from tumors, but its not been proven that infection with these viruses causes a tumor to occur.
Lastly, genetics definitely play a role, as evidenced by the higher risk in certain breeds .

The mammary development that comes with nursing can make the spay surgery more difficult. Ideally, a month after weaning allows for regression of this tissue and spaying can proceed. Unfortunately, it is possible for a female cat to become pregnant during this waiting period if her owner is not careful.

How Is Ovarian Remnant Syndrome Diagnosed
Your veterinarian will diagnose the presence of ovarian remnant syndrome using one or more of the following diagnostic tests.
1. ;;Vaginal Cytology This test involves taking a swab from your pets vagina while she is showing signs of heat. Your veterinarian will assess the sample under the microscope for the presence of a specific type of cell called cornified cells. If these cornified cells are found, this indicates that your pet is under the influence of estrogen. Possible sources of estrogen include an ovarian remnant, estrogen from external sources , or other hormonal imbalances. This test is often used as a preliminary screening test for the presence of an ovarian remnant, though it is not specific for an ovarian remnant.
2.;;; Baseline Hormone Levels A variety of studies have examined the use of baseline hormone testing in diagnosing ovarian remnant syndrome. However, these tests are not frequently recommended, due to low reliability. While abnormal hormone levels can indicate the presence of an ovarian remnant, normal hormone levels do not rule out the presence of an ovarian remnant.
3.;;; Ultrasound Ultrasound may be used to visualize ovarian tissue, if it is performed while the pet is in heat. The accuracy of this test, however, is influenced by the size of the ovarian remnant, the stage of the heat cycle during which the test is performed, and the skill of the ultrasonographer. Again, this test is not frequently used.
How Does Spaying A Cat Work
âSpecifically, spaying is when a female cat has a ovariohysterectomy, when the entire uterus and ovaries are removed from the body,â explains Dr. Mar. âThey can also be considered spayed with just an ovariectomy, when solely the ovaries and uterine horns are removed, but the uterus itself remains. The latter is less commonly performed and not generally advised,â she says.

What If She Is Pregnant At The Time Of Spay
Cat spaying can be performed at any time during the course of pregnancy. Often, the owner is unaware that the cat is pregnant. If there is any question, make it clear to your veterinarian what your wishes are should your cat be found pregnant. The incision can be closed and the pregnancy can proceed or the spay can proceed and the developing kittens will be removed along with the rest of the uterus. Due to extra work and surgery time, most veterinarians will charge an extra fee for spaying a pregnant animal. Some veterinarians will not knowingly spay a pregnant animal after a certain stage of pregnancy. At my hospital, we are commonly asked what to do about newly adopted stray cats thought to be pregnant. As we work with numerous rescue groups, we are keenly aware of the pet over-population problem. We encourage spaying of strays or newly adopted female cats regardless of pregnancy. There are simply too many kittens without homes as it is.

What Does A Spaying Scar Look Like
A healing cat spaying scar appears clean, the edges of the incision should be touching each other and it will look more reddish in color for the first few days and inflamed around the altered tissue. Some incisions might present external sutures but most of the slits are closed from the inside. When its healed a spaying scar from a traditional spaying procedure will look like a slightly pink vertical clean line on the cats abdomen, about 2-3 inches long that feels bumpier to the touch than the rest of the cats skin. A laser spay surgery should leave behind a similar-looking mark, but with less scar tissue visible because of the cauterization of the slit by the laser, making this scar harder to find. The third method of spaying, the laparoscopic spay, uses a small camera to see inside the cats abdomen and will leave you looking for one to three small incision scars across the abdomen, about 0.19 inches . These scars are almost impossible to find with time.
