Major Dust Problem = Bad Choice For Cat Owners
I’d used this product for years based on it’s advertising as being scoopable. I have about 5 indoor cats and have 3 litter boxes in a back room. The major problem with this litter is that all of the shelves in this back room are now covered with a film of dust produced when cats use these litter boxes the floor in this room and all of the shelves are completely covered with a film of dust. I will be spending a lot of time cleaning off all of these shelves and items in this room. I’m now trying to decide how to clean the floor in this room because the wood cleaning product I’ll be using on these shelves will not be good to also use on the floors as it will get on my cats’ paws. If I’d only been aware of this problem with this specific brand of litter I’ve not have been buying it. Unfortunately I wasn’t aware of how bad this litter is due to its’ dust problem.

What The Ingredients Really Say
Chicken is the first ingredient. More specifically which is probably more chicken carcass in powder form rather than the succulent chicken breast on the front of the bag.
Dont be fooled into thinking Special Kitty is mostly chicken though. Far from it.
The next FOUR ingredients are probably included in the same amount of the chicken, and none of them are ingredients you would associate with a cat as an obligate carnivore.
So what are they?
Corn gluten meal to cheaply ramp up the protein, despite a cats digestive system geared to digest meat protein not vegetable protein.
It gets worse from there, as you shouldnt be feeding your cat soybean meal, wheat, and brewers rice. So many cats get sick these days from dry kibble, and my guess is ingredients such as these are the most harmful.

Wheat is such a problematic grain for cats and dogs. Its hard for them to digest, and also one of the root causes of intolerances, itchy skin, obesity, and likely organ failure down the track .
When we look at the guaranteed analysis we find 38% protein which appears good, but this is more from the corn gluten meal and grains than chicken. 13% fat isnt great either.
Special Kitty can barely be considered cat food, and my recommendation is you avoid it and find something more species appropriate.
Special Kitty Cat Food Recalls
There are no exact details when Walmart had started to introduced Special Kitty, but the brand has a number of recalls in the past. In 2008, the brand has been recalled for a number of products that were affected by melamine. The brand also has records of being recalled because of possible contamination of salmonella in their products.
However, the most recent one is in 2018. The J.M. Smucker Company had issued a voluntary recall of a lot of their products from 9Lives, EverPet and Special Kitty. This is because the products have low levels of thiamine. This problem was discovered by the Qualitys Assurance of the company at the facility where it was manufactured.
This recall is a precautionary measure done by the company and it includes numerous variety of Special Kitty including Beef and Liver Dinner, Classic Tuna Dinner, Mixed Grill with Printed Wrap, Mixed Grill Without Printed Wrap and Super Supper.

Fortunately, there have not been any recalls of the Special Kitty brand of cat food at this time.
However, there was a recall of Fancy Feast pate three years ago due to inadequate nutritional levels.
This was just one minor issue that wasnt even directly related to the wet cat food itself! That being said, you should take the time to read other customer reviews about this brand before deciding whether or not its right for your feline friend.
Which Types Of Cats Is Special Kitty Best Suited For
Its difficult to honestly review budget foods like Special Kitty without sounding elitist. We understand that not everyone can afford to give their cat top-of-the-line foods, and we also believe that everyone should be able to experience the joys of pet ownership, regardless of their financial situation.
That said, the only reason to buy Special Kitty is if youre strapped for cash. It has a poor nutritional profile, and theres little reason to believe that the manufacturer is strict about quality control.
If this is the best food that you can afford, then by all means, buy it. Wed much rather you feed your cat Special Kitty than leave them languishing in a shelter. However, if you can afford anything else, you should probably buy that instead.

Do Not Buy This Cat Food
My cat will basically eat ANY food. Special Kitty Cat Food is one she will NOT eat though. She refuses to eat it and just walks away from her dish. I only bought it for her once. I didn’t think much of it until I read the ingredient list and then looked at some reviews online.Special Kitty Cat Food is extremely cheap. It’s cheap for a reason. The ingredients are awful quality. If you have a bag of this around, go look at the ingredients. There is basically no nutritional value to this food. Also look at the color of the food compared to other brands. The dye they use has got to be horrible. My cat turned down this food. She doesn’t turn down any food. Eating is her favorite hobby. At first I thought she wasn’t feeling well but that wasn’t the case. I went and got a different food and she ate it right away. I do NOT recommend this horrible quality food. There is no nutritional value and the ingredients are horrible. Even my “eat anything in the world” cat refused to eat it. You know there is something weird with the food if that occurs.
