Why Rescue A Shelter Dog
Because shelter dogs are full of love!
Is it because they know you saved them and love you harder for it?
I can’t say for certain, but yes.
Jokes aside, there are three things all shelter dogs need to thrive in their new home:
- Most Rescues are foster-based organizations that don’t have physical facilities.
- They usually have websites and contact emails, but not all of them have phone numbers.
- Because they don’t have a physical facility, you need to view animals in their foster network online, usually on their website but sometimes on their member pages on either PetFinder or Adopt-a-Pet.
- If you see an animal you’d like to meet, contact the rescue using the process listed on their website or via email. They’ll help you through the application process and set up a time for you to meet the animal at the foster’s home.
- Adopting from a rescue generally is the most expensive option here and takes the longest, but you get an animal that’s been cared for in a loving home environment and their foster can tell you a lot about their personality.

About Larimer County Humane Society
Larimer County Humane Society has been serving the people and pets of Northern Colorado since 1969. The vision, passion, and fortitude of their small group of 30 founders is still evident in the work the society does today. It’s their belief that all animals deserve a safe haven from neglect, abuse, hunger, discomfort, pain, and distress. The society is guided in their work by the Five Freedoms:
- Freedom from hunger and thirst
- Freedom from discomfort
- Freedom from pain, injury, and disease
- Freedom to express normal behavior
- Freedom from fear and distress
As an open-admission shelter, they strive to work by these principles, by giving any animal in need, no matter their age or health, a second chance at happiness. The shelter takes in a wide variety of animals including dogs, cats, small mammals, exotics, and barnyard animals. Every year thousands of animals come through their doors in need of care, shelter, and medical attention. Around 2,000 animals are reunited with their grateful owners, while close to 3,000 are found new, loving forever homes.
Larimer County Humane Society also runs the countys only Animal Protection & Control unit. They’re contracted to uphold local and state animal protection and control laws within the cities of Loveland, Fort Collins, and unincorporated areas of Larimer County.
Why Should You Adopt
Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.
What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?
When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.
So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.

Fort Collins Cat Rescue & Spay/neuter Clinic Says Kittens And Puppies Can Go Into Heat As Early As 4 And 5 Months Old
They may be just babies, but kittens as young as 4 months and puppies as young as 5 months are old enough to get pregnant and have their first litter just two months later. These precious babies shouldnt be parents at 5 and 6 months old, says Dr. Gloria Matsushita, staff veterinarian at Fort Collins Cat Rescue & Spay/Neuter Clinic.
Thats whyFort Collins Cat Rescue & Spay/Neuter Clinic, with funding provided byPetSmart Charities, the largest funder of animal welfare efforts in North America, is introducing thePrecious, Not Parentscampaign. Through the Precious, Not Parents campaign, FCCRSNC will provide $20 spay and neuter surgeries for up to 140 puppies and kittens under 6 months of age during the month of June.
Some pet parents may worry that their pet is too young for this procedure, but spaying and neutering is safe and easy for kittens and puppies as young as 8 to 10 weeks old, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association. In fact, Fort Collins Cat Rescue & Spay/Neuter Clinic has performed thousands of pediatric spay/neuter surgeries since 2007.
Many owners put off the procedure and wait until the puppy or kitten is 6 to 8 months old, says Matsushita. But by then, a litter of puppies or kittens can be born.
