While waiting until this age is important for a kitten’s behavioral and social development, kittens sometimes can be separated from their mothers at an earlier age. As an average, breeders and/or catteries will offer kittens for sale at about 3 months old.

Norwegian Forest Cat Overview

These big, beautiful cats are the perfect pets for families that love companionship but don’t need constant physical contact with their cats. Norwegian forest cats are eager to be close and interact by playing or just observing, but they prefer not to be picked up all the time. Their dense coats require more care than shorter-haired breeds, and they are prone to certain health conditions, but these cats are well worth the effort.

  • Friendly with people and pets

  • Can tolerate cold temperatures

  • Coat needs brushing at least weekly

  • Doesnt like being left alone for long

The Temperament Of A Norwegian Forest Cat

Wedgies are known for being affectionate and loving companions, thanks to their gentle and calm nature. They love to stay close to their owners, and as they are pretty quiet, youll often turn around to find your kitty right there, simply relaxing in your presence. Therefore, they certainly have an undemanding nature. Still, when you start to pet them, youll immediately notice their eyes light up and will hear an instant purr.

Norwegian Forest cats are a very intelligent breed, and they can have a lot of energy. Therefore, with this feline, youll need to have a bunch of games up your sleeve as they require plenty of playtime. They also love to climb, so bookshelves and cat trees are ideal to have with one of these kitties around.

Challenging puzzle games are great for them, too, as they will occupy their mind and allow them to release their energy. Youll know if they are not feeling challenged or stimulated enough, as they will start acting particularly lazy and sleepy.

Because of their high energy, they are not massive lap cats, although they are not immune to sleeping on their owners either. However, most times, they prefer to receive love through petting and stroking. Moreover, they generally only get very vocal when they are hungry or need something.

Norwegian Forest Cat Care

Norwegian Forest Cat Kittens For Sale Michigan

Brush or comb the Norwegian Forest Cats long coat once or twice a week, using a bristle brush, wire slicker brush or stainless steel comb. If you run across tangles, work them out gently so you dont hurt the cat. A bath is rarely necessary, which is a good thing. With the Wegies practically waterproof coat, it can be very difficult to get him wet enough for a bath.

Brush the teeth to prevent periodontal disease. Daily dental hygiene is best, but weekly brushing is better than nothing. Wipe the corners of the eyes daily with a soft, damp cloth to remove any discharge. Use a separate area of the cloth for each eye so you dont run the risk of spreading any infection. Check the ears weekly. If they look dirty, wipe them out with a cotton ball or soft damp cloth moistened with a 50-50 mixture of cider vinegar and warm water. Avoid using cotton swabs, which can damage the interior of the ear.

Keep the litter box spotlessly clean. Like all cats, Wegies are very particular about bathroom hygiene. A clean litter box will also help to keep their fur clean.

Temperament

This breed is typically described as friendly, calm, and gentle. Norwegian forest cats are adaptable to different families and lifestyles, and are generally good with children and other animals.

Both DAM Bridget and SIRE Blue Frost are registered pedigreed Norwegian Forest Cats with The Cat Fanciers Association and The International Cat Association . About The Norwegian Forest Cat

Known as the Skogkatt in its native Norway, the Norwegian Forest Cat is a large, semi-longhaired cat whose rugged appearance fits its name. Despite the hardy facade, this breed is very much a homebody that enjoys the company of other pets and particularly their human companions. Their relationship with you can best be described as on their own terms. Yes, Forest Cats can be lap cats, but THEY will decide when to get on or off that lap. At a minimum, Forest Cats insist on being near their people in a place of their choosing: chair, bed, or desktop. A scratching post and a cat tree, preferably tall, are musts for the Norwegian Forest Cat home. These are moderatley active cats there will be bursts of energy followed by long naps. Sensitive yet social, you will find them to be intelligent cats that adapt readily to change. Breeders are often asked if these cats need to be outside. As with all cats, inside the home is quite suitable and is certainly the safest environment. Providing interesting toys, perches with outside views, and most importantly, regular one-on-one time will result in a well-adjusted cat.

Often identified by their brown tabby and white coats, Norwegian Forest Cats actually come in most colors, from pure white to deepest coal black, with every possible coat pattern and color combination in between, with the exception of the colorpoint colors as seen in the Siamese or Persian-Himalayan, such as seal point or chocolate point.

Reasons To Add A Norwegian Forest To Your Family

  • They love to be involved in family life – Norwegian Forest cats want to feel like they are part of the family. They adore when they are cuddled, played with, and involved in family events.
  • They have British ancestors – It is thought that this breeds ancestors may include British shorthairs brought to Norway from Great Britain by the Vikings around 1000 AD.
  • They love children – Wedgies like receiving attention from all humans, including the smallest ones. They will even tolerate a child dressing them up or carrying them around.
  • Even their meow is cute – They tend to have a very high-pitched meow that sounds more like a cute chirp rather than a demanding call.
  • They will keep pests away – Norwegian Forest cats are natural hunters. They can catch any rodent or insect that enters the house, keeping it clean and pest-free!
  • Each one has a unique appearance – Their coats can come in almost every colour and pattern, so you know that your Wedgie will look different to all the others.
  • They take five years to mature – Being so slow to develop your Norwegian Forest will possess that cute innocence of a playful kitten for years to come.

Norwegian Forest cats are calm and adaptable, so they will generally find happiness in any household, providing they receive plenty of love and care. If you have young children or existing pets, Wedgies are a fab choice as they are so easygoing.

One important thing to note about Norwegian Forest cats is that they crave human attention but never demand it. Unfortunately, this hidden trait can make people think they will do fine if left alone frequently. But, in reality, prolonged periods of solitude will make a Norwegian Forest an unhappy kitty. Therefore, if you work full time, be sure to shower them with love in the morning, evening, and weekend.
