Pensacola Hotel For Cats And Dogs

A Decade Of Helping Animals

Pensacola Hotel for Dogs and Cats

To celebrate this prosperity, the Hotel for Dogs and Cats is hosting its 10th Anniversary Pawty on Saturday.

The organization encourages those who have adopted to bring their pets along for the party, too. The event includes food vendors, wading pools for pets, face painting and raffles, with all the proceeds going directly back into the hotel.

Additionally, guests may bring items from the organizations wish list to donate. Right now, there is a specific need for leashes, food, paper towels and garbage bags, Kinkead said.

The Hotel for Dogs and Cats is always looking for more volunteers to give a few hours of their day to walking, feeding and cleaning up after the animals. The organization is open every day of the week except Wednesday, but the care never ends, and with the constant welcoming of animals, it is always needed.

“Saving lives does not take a break,” Bell said.

Volunteers Play Key Role

Pensacola Hotel For Dogs and Cats needs help finding new ...

Kinkead and a team of nearly 25 volunteers give time each day to the Hotel for Dogs and Cats, doing everything they can to assist the animals brought into their care. If there is no space in the facility, they instantly place the animal on a waitlist.

Volunteers stick with the animals through the whole process from welcoming them to the shelter to administering treatments to completing the adoption process.

We do what needs to be done, Bell said.

When an animal enters the Hotel for Dogs and Cats, it is immediately assessed. With the help of local veterinarians including Gull Point Animal Hospital, Dr. Liz Tringas of Spanish Trail Veterinary Hospital and Dr. David Perrett of Pine Forest Animal Clinic the animals are vaccinated, neutered or spayed, and checked for possible complications such as feline leukemia and AIDS, Bell said.

Once adopted, the animal is sent home with all of their hotel belongings toys, clothes, food and their own bed. These care packages provide familiarity for the animals as they enter their forever homes, said Patty Cohagan, kennel technician at the Hotel for Dogs and Cats.

A Home For Every Animal

Every animal finds their forever home, even if home is the hotel.

Bama, a permanent resident of the Hotel for Dogs and Cats, was a feral dog when the organization found him in a nearby landfill 12 years ago. After undergoing care and treatment, Bama was adopted. A few years later his owner passed away and volunteers brought him back to the hotel, where he has lived ever since.

They are loved no matter how long they stay, Cohagan said.

Bama and his feline roommate, Bayliss, occupy the kitchen in the back of the hotel. The rest of the space is used based on the animals and their needs.

In the hotel’s isolation room, two dogs are in the midst of their 12-week heartworm treatment. Heartworm disease requires costly medication, totaling $500 to $600 per animal, Bell said.

Hotel For Dogs And Cats In Pensacola Has Vacancy For New Pet Owners

Pensacola Hotel For Dogs And Cats Adoption And Rescue Shelter Service

Theres plenty of vacancy at the Hotel for Dogs and Cats in northeast Pensacola. Vacancy, that is, for someone to adopt their next best friend. The animal rescue and adoption service recently celebrated its eighth anniversary and it’s still going strong.

Everybody said it wasnt going to work, said Pam Bell, the hotels energetic owner. But its worked out great.

A recent party for the hotels birthday doubled as a reunion for past adopters who provided new homes for more than 50 dogs. A local pastor came to give a blessing of the pets as they splashed around in wading pools.

Shes done advanced canine good citizenship, said Kirk Klawitter, referring to a behavioral course completed by Ziva, his black lab-Australian shepherd mix. He adopted her from the hotel three years ago.

Weve also had several friends adopt from here, said Klawitter.

Word of mouth is what draws most visitors to the hotel, a nonprofit shelter funded by adoption fees and donations. Kim Greenfield, the facilitys office manager, checks out potential owners from when they first walk through the door and confirms their residency status and vaccination records since the majority of them already own a pet.

While recovering from a family tragedy, Greenfield first came to the hotel after seeing the 2009 Pensacola News Journal article that broke the news of its inception.
