Adopting From A Rehome Private Owner

What Is the Best Age to Adopt a Kitten?

If you see Im Being Cared for by Private Owner on the top of a pets page, it means that they were listed by their owner through Adopt-a-Pet.coms Rehome program, so you will be adopting the pet directly from the pets private owner. Read all about the pet. If youre interested in speaking to the owner and meeting the pet, click Apply To Adopt and apply. The owner will be notified of your application, so they can review it and call you if theyre interested.

Rehome asks private owners to reply to you promptly, and most do within a few days. However some owners are in difficult situations, so please allow up to 14 days for an owner to respond to you. Rehome is only the listing website. It is up to the owner to choose who to contact and who will adopt their pet. It is up to you the adopter to ask lots of questions about the pet on the phone with the owner, then meet the pet in person before paying safely through the Rehome website to adopt a private owner pet.

The Right Match For You And Your Family

Cats can live up to 20 years or more and very actively at that so even a cat who is five years old or older still has many years ahead of them.

Are you ready to take on a 20-year responsibility? If so, a kitten might be great choice for you. If you arent, then an adult cat who might be five or 10 may be a better choice.

Get The Goods You Need

Before you bring home a cat, get your place ready for its arrival. In addition to food and litter , you’ll need to create a happy, safe environment for your new furry friend. Put away precarious tchotchkes cats love to knock things off ledges. Look for exposed wires, poisonous plants, or unsecured furniture that could injure a curious kitty if they topple it. Equip your space with at least one scratching post and a cat tree for climbing, especially if you don’t want to find a kitten on top of your kitchen cabinets. You’ll also want to get them cat toys to keep them occupied, or DIY it for a fun weekend project.

Also make sure you get a veterinarian lined up. The shelter or rescue organization may already have a relationship with one, or be able to make a recommendation.

Preparing To Welcome Your Kitten

There are 8 things you need to prepare before bringing your kittens home.

  • Kitten proof your home Kittens are so tiny but full of energy, curiosity and are likely to hide in narrow open spaces and can get away through small holes easily. So, it would be good to kitten proof your home by closing off any open holes or gaps where kittens can get stuck, put a mesh in your balcony/windows and take steps to make sure they do not run outside. Also, make sure there are no tiny artifacts lying around that they might swallow, cats are extremely curious creatures. Anything dangling is a cat toy for them, so be careful to secure all your wires/cables to create a safe and healthy living space for your kittens.
  • A cardboard box/basket to carry the kittens. You could either buy a pet carrier or like me, simply use an available basket/cardboard box to bring them home.
  • Litter tray any plastic tray of medium size is enough. Decide a permanent location for the tray, preferably ventilated areas. I use around 20X25 cm sized plastic tray for my kittens.
  • Pet food I would suggest you to check with the foster family and confirm what they eat before buying the food. Or you can buy in small quantities or dry and wet food, make sure they are eating it before buying larger quantity. My kittens love Whiskas tuna in jelly, chicken in gravy and dry food.
  • Those Amazon package boxes As you might be already aware, cats love boxes. So do not throw away those amazon parcel boxes as they might come handy.

    Want to adopt a kitten

There are several NGOs, shelter homes and Facebook groups from where you can get information about kittens that are up for adoption. A simple web search will give you this information. I reached out to an NGO named iadopt.in for adopting my kittens. They had visited my work campus for a pet adoption drive from where I took their contact and reached out to them after deciding to adopt kittens.

We decided to adopt two kittens because both of us are working and we did not want them to feel lonely when we are not around. Through iadopt.in we got couple of options and we decided to go meet a foster family having a litter of 5 kittens to choose our kittens. We visited them and there was this cute little ginger kitten who came near us and just never left our side. We fell in love with him instantly. We named him Simba. Apparently Simba was very close with another kitty from the same litter, who is also ginger and looks like an identical twin of Simba. We decided not to seperate them and chose her and named her Nala. They were 6 weeks old when we met them and were perfectly healthy and litter trained.

Our Sweet Old Lady Josefina Has Been Adopted By Her Two Favorite Volunteers Phillip And Kim

Josefina was used as a photo prop for tourists before she came to AmaZOOnico. Luckily, a group of AmaZOOnico volunteers reported this to the authorities, so she can be rescued. Now she lives with us where she loves to eat and sleep in high branches. She is a fine old lady waiting to find someone to adopt her. She is very used to humans and her name in Spanish is Coatà Amazónico, tejón o cuchucho Amazónico. Her species is unfortanetly hunted for meat or for the pet trade. With your contributions, we will continue to educate the community on how to report animals that are being used for tourist pictures, illegal trafficking, etc. in order to protect the wild life.

    Get Used To Scooping Litter

Cats can be picky about their litter box style and location, so it might take a little trial and error to find one they like. Place it in a quiet, low-traffic area of your home so they can potty in peace. You may also want to choose a covered or partially covered style so you don’t end up with litter all over the place when they bury their mess. Wang advises scooping it at least daily, to keep your pet’s toilet clean and cut down on that smell. Cats sometimes do their business outside of their box if they don’t like their litter, its style or location, or if they’re feeling stressed out or unhappy. Scooping it regularly will eliminate at least one of those factors, so set a schedule and stick to it.

Life Is Better With A Furry Friend Come Meet Our Brood

We have hundreds of animals waiting eagerly to find their forever homes. Many of them have been rescued from the streets and each of them is deserving of a loving, caring family they can call their own.

Its a lot easier to adopt than you think. We promise. And were here to guide you every step of the way.

    Why Should You Adopt

Adopt a Cat – How to Choose a Cat

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.

    Set Them Up For Success

When you first bring your cat home, give them time and space to get used to their new digs. “Especially true for kittens and timider adult cats, it is important to help them transition into a new environment by giving them a dedicated area to relax and adjust to their new surroundings,” Wang says. That goes double if you have other cats or dogs in the home. Set up a spare room or a corner of the bathroom with their litter box, food and water, and some of those toys, and then let them come to you. Most cats will get curious after a few days, but it can take some time for them to warm up.

And even though cats have the reputation of being aloof, don’t forget daily playtime, Wang says. An afternoon game of chase that squeaker will help them maintain a healthy weight, stay mentally sharp, and best of all, help form the bond that children’s movies are made of.

    Compile A List Of Agencies

If you’re like many pet lovers, you may already have a few of your local adoption agencies bookmarked for midnight scrolling. But if not, compile a list of a few handfuls nearby. Look for reputable organizations that are registered as 501 nonprofits, and do a little background research on their website, social media, and any local media to make sure you’re working with someone who treats their animals well and sources them ethically. Websites like PetFinder and Adopt-a-Pet can help you find pets at shelters and rescue organizations near you.

    Other Pets In The Household

Lots of adopters come to us for a kitten because they have a dog, and want to raise the kitten to be best friends with it. The truth is, some kittens are destined to be cats who dont like dogs or possibly not even like other cats. Just like people, cats are born with certain personality traits that are unavoidable regardless of a kittens environment during formative months. However, many of our adult cats have lived successfully with dogs in their previous or foster homes. If you currently have a dog in your household, we can pair you up with a cat who will fit right in.

A Group Of Crazy Squirrel Monkeys

    Alley Cat Allies

When amaZOOnico was founded, it was located in the territory of a group of squirrel monkeys. After some time, they started to steal the food of other animals, so the amaZOOnico-Team decided to feed them to avoid the unnessesary conflict. Unfortunately, the squirrel monkeys gained a lot of trust and started to sleep every night under the roof of the main house. Reproduction rates have also increased, since their predators tend to avoid the center. Nowadays there are 3 groups and in total 200-300 individuals. We are feeding them outside of the center and would like to increase the amount of food, to prevent them from stealing so much.

Do You Really Need Kitten Food

Until theyre 1 year old, kittens need up to three times the calories as adult cats. So look for food made especially for kittens and feed your kitten the amount recommended on the label. Talk to your vet about using canned food, dry kibbles, or a mixture of both. Be sure to put the food somewhere the dog can’t get to, as kitty food can upset a dog’s stomach and add unwanted pounds.

Pick The Right Food And Feeding Setup

Look for wide, shallow feeding bowls that won’t disturb their highly sensitive whiskers at meal time, advises Lambert Wang, co-founder of Cat Person. And because cats are obligate carnivores, meat is the name of the game. “Feed your new friend a high-quality diet that has high amounts of animal protein, moderate amounts of fat, and a limited amount of carbohydrates,” Wang says. While dry food can be more convenient, wet food helps your cat get enough water, since cats often prefer to play with water over actually drinking it. A mix of protein flavors and formats will give their diet a little variety, as well as cultivate a more varied palate in kittens, in particular. Besides, you wouldn’t want to eat the same thing every day. Neither will they.

    Time To Spay Or Neuter

With an estimated 6 million dogs and cats entering shelters every year, there are not enough loving families for all of them. Thats why groups like the Humane Society and the American Veterinary Medical Association recommend spaying or neutering your cat, which can be done as early as 8 weeks old. Some groups can help with the cost of surgery.

    The Scoop On Litter Boxes

Cats have an instinct to poop in soil or sand, so your kitten will likely use a litter box right away. Put it in a quiet spot, and show them where it is. Kitty litter choices include regular and clumping clay litter, crystal litter, as well as litter made from wood chips, grains, and newspapers. Some cat boxes are too high for kittens to get in and out easily, so you may need to start with a low-sided box until your kitten grows.

The Tapir Mom: Navidad Has Been Adopted By Johanna A Golden Oldie Volunteer Who Used To Babysit Her

Navidad arrived as a baby on the 26th of December, 2011. This is the reason she has such a festive name! As a baby, she required close care and became very used to people. Therefore, if she were to be releseased into the wild she could be easily hunted.

Over the last ten years, Navidad has had a lot of experiences! She has fallen in love, enjoyed swimming, basked in the sun, tried a great variety of fruits and leaves… and in 2016 she became a mom! Her sons are Pumpkin and Poppy, two strong males. We already released one of them – Pumpkin – back into the jungle. We want to release Poppy as well so that he can contribute to the conservation of this vulnerable species. If we are successful, it would be without a doubt thanks to Navidad!

This mom, like all moms, deserves to be well taken care of and pampered, right?

Are There Regular Checks After Adoption

Yes. We want to make sure that our pets are well taken care of. We will phone to make sure all is going OK. We would also like to know the name and number of the vet to which you regularly take him/her or you can take him/her to our shelter vets for their care. And we require that the pet is not allowed to breed and will be altered if not already done so at our shelter.
