Why does my CAT have DILATED PUPILS? – Common Causes
USA- North-East

“Round pupils are characteristic of “big cats” and many oriental breeds of domestic cat. They seem to be associated with “canine-like” behaviours compared with the typical feline behaviour patterns of a small European moggie. IIRC the slit pupil makes kittens very sensitive to horizontal movement but requires exceptional retinal sensitivity for night hunting, whereas the round-pupil cats tend to hunt by day and by pouncing on static prey rather than swiping moving objects.”

Ocular Cancers And Tumors

When a cat develops a tumor behind the eye, it will often be malignant. This tumor can spread throughout a cats body. This will be painful for your cat, leading to dilated pupils. Other symptoms include:

  • Discoloration
  • Misshapen iris
  • Cloudy eyes

The diagnosis of eye tumors is completed using an ophthalmoscope. Biopsies will then be taken to determine the severity of the tumor.

If the tumor is small, it may be treatable by laser. In most cases, full removal of the eye will be needed to prevent the tumor from spreading.

Anticholinergic Drugs And Plants

Drugs or plants with anticholinergic effects are substances that block acetylcholine from binding to its receptors on certain nerve cells, inhibiting parasympathetic nerve impulses. These nerve impulses are part of the autonomic nervous system responsible for several functions not consciously controlled, which includes pupil dilation and constriction). Several prescription and over the counter drugs in the following classes have anticholinergic effects, which include:

  • Tricyclic antidepressants

Gastrointestinal decontamination if ingestion is recent, followed by activated charcoal to bind to any remaining toxins in the gastrointestinal tract.

The antidote for anticholinergic toxicity is Physostigmine, which works by increasing extracellular levels of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which counteracts the effects of the anticholinergics.

Supportive care may include intravenous fluids to correct pH disturbances or electrolyte imbalances, oxygen therapy, pilocarpine to reduce pupil dilation, diazepam to control seizures.

What Is Unequal Pupil Size

Normally, the pupils expand and contract in unison. When unequal pupils occur, the abnormal eye can be either be the smaller pupil or the larger pupil. There may or may not be other symptoms present. If unequal pupils occur suddenly, bring your cat to a veterinary clinic or animal hospital immediately as eyesight can be permanently damaged if the problem is not rectified. Certain underlying causes of unequal pupils can be life threatening.

Unequal pupils, or anisocoria as it is called in the medical community, occurs when one of a cats pupils is either too far open or too far closed in relation to the other pupil. This gives the appearance of a small black dot in the center of one eye and a larger black dot in the center of the other. This condition is often the result of a more serious complication within the cat.

When Is It An Albino Cat Or Just A White Cat With Blue Eyes

Why Do Some Cats Have Round Pupils?

An albino cat will rarely have the pink eyes associated with most animals with albinism. Rather, the eyes will be a very pale blue or a faint lilac tone. As an albino has no melanin, this is not so much an eye color as light reflecting the blood flow in the back of the retina. A white cat with sapphire or cornflower blue eyes may not be an albino.

Do remember that deafness is only associated with the dominant white gene rather than the white spotting gene.

Albino cats are technically not white, they simply have no melanin meaning they have no color at all. Thus, an albino may not have the hearing problems of the typical white cat, though she may have some vision problems.

Why Cats Have Vertical Pupils

07 August 2015

Have you ever wondered why your cat’s eyes have those creepy vertical slits for pupils? A new study suggests the reason may lie in cats’ preferred mode of hunting.

Vertical-slit pupils are most common among nocturnal predators that ambush their prey, according to the new research, published today in the journal Science Advances. Most likely, this pupil shape provides the sharpest way to gauge distance for a prey-snatching leap, the study found.

The new research doesn’t only demystify the housecat, however it also reveals that the bizarre horizontal, rectangular pupils sported by goats and sheep likely help these prey animals scan the horizon for predators and watch the terrain when sprinting from danger. Moreover, circular pupils tend to be found on tall, active predators that are awake during the day.

Cat’s eye

The observation that predators tend to have vertical pupils and prey horizontal ones dates back to the 1940s, but no one had ever quantified that difference, said Martin Banks, a vision researcher at the University of California, Berkeley. To find out if there was truth behind the casual observations, Banks and his team assembled a database of 214 land-based species. Then, they analyzed the pupil shape of each species in relation to the animal’s foraging habits and day or nighttime activity.

The other method, blur, takes advantage of the fuzziness of objects behind and in front of the spot on which you’re focusing.

Today were looking at the meaning of cats non-verbal communication: the eyes. Read on for facts about cats eyes as a way of understanding what theyre thinking.

Have you ever been innocently petting a cat when all of a sudden WAP they get you with their claws? What was that all about? You think as you dab the blood with a tissue. With their impassive faces and ability to hide pain, cats are famously hard to read, unlike dogs who are pretty transparent. Whens the last time you wondered if a dog was happy, sad or scared? Probably never.

Cats do not have expressive faces like dogs, and it all comes down to the fact that they dont have eyebrows. That makes it a lot harder to tell the meaning behind your cats eyes. Like humans, dogs use eyebrows as a communication device. Call a dogs name and up go their eyebrows. Call a cats name and they look at you as if to say, Ugh, what do you want? They arent really thinking this its just that their faces dont demonstrate emotion. It is theorized that cats have a small capacity for facial recognition, meaning they dont really read our expressions. So while we cant read their faces, they cant read ours, either.

Why Are My Cat’s Eyes Dilated

Why Does Your Cat Have Strange Eyes?

It is important to note that the dilation of the pupils can be due to other factors, other than light entry. The answers to why your cat has dilated pupils are numerous and can be related to reactions to health problems. Round pupils in cats can also express:

  • Excitation: when the animal is very excited and/or nervous, for example, during a game session, it is usual to see it with round or elliptical pupils. However, excitement does not always happen because of positive stimuli, since it can also occur due to stress or anxiety.
  • Satisfaction: in situations that produce happiness, the cat also dilates its pupils as a reflex. An example may be when we fill its bowl with food.
  • Fear: if the cat has dilated pupils and their eyes wide open it is a clear sign of fear.
  • Aggression: cats dilate their pupils when they stare at their prey and prepare to attack.

Although some of the causes that explain why a cat has round pupils are positive, it is important to note that this is sometimes not healthy. If we notice dilated pupils while playing there is nothing to worry about. However, if your cats pupils are dilated because of stress or discomfort, the situation should be assessed. If your animal is feeling anxious, it is your our duty to find the reason why your animal is disturbed and treat it in order to restore emotional stability.

Narrow Pupils Signal An Aroused Cat

Arousal can be caused by many things anger, fear and pleasure, primarily. These emotions can result in the sudden contraction of pupils so that they become narrow slits. You might see this if your cat encounters a catnip mouse and prepares to attack it. Even the smell of catnip itself can cause arousal in a cat that likes the stuff.

You may also see the pupils contract suddenly if shes about to kill her favorite toy . Anger can also cause pupils to contract into slits this is usually accompanied by growling or hissing, though.

If the cat eyes are narrow and the eyes are squinted, thats a sign of aggression. The squint helps to protect her eyes from an opponents claws.

However, if the cat pupils are narrow and your cat is relaxing on your lap and purring, you can probably guess that shes experiencing great pleasure.

Why Do Cats Have Vertical Pupils The Hunts The Thing

My mother is a Cat Lady in training. Because she has severe allergies and asthma, the last and only cat she lived with in my lifetime was nine lives ago way back when I was in high school. That changed three years ago when my sister rescued a tiny, tailless, longhaired black kitten who was malnourished and had broken and missing teeth. Mom and Blue have developed a routine and bonded in the comfort of a favorite chair. Learning to live with her new feline housemate, Mom often asks why do cats questions. One of her questions after closely observing Blue as she sat on the chair arm was, Why do cats have vertical pupils? Good question, Mom.

Recently a group of scientists were also curious about the significance of pupil shapes in terrestrial species. Pupils come in a variety of different shapes, but why? In their analysis of 214 land animals, the scientists looked at the animals lifestyle , eye placement on the head, and three pupil shapesround, horizontal, and vertical. Martin Banks, a University of California at Berkeley professor of optometry, and co-author Gordon Love, a professor of physics at Durham University, found a striking correlation between pupil shape and ecological niche in the animal kingdom that is, their foraging mode and time of the day they are active.

If The Pupil Remains Dilated For An Extended Period Of Time It Is Important To Rule Out Any Underlying Problems

Persistently dilated pupils could be a clue that your cat is experiencing pain somewhere in its body. If the eye itself is painful it would usually only be the affected eye that is different. The pupil would likely be constricted rather than dilated.

If your cats eyes are persistently dilated and there doesnt appear to be an obvious cause, then it would be prudent to arrange a check-up with your veterinary surgeon. Your vet will perform a physical examination of your cat. They will look not only at the eye but looking to rule out any other potential causes of large pupils.

You wont find horizontal pupils on any cats, but lots of grazing animals goats, sheep, cattle, horses, kangaroos, hippopotamuses have them so they can see big cats sneaking up on them. Yes, its true: wide cat eyes can mean both excitement and fear, so youll have to suss out the meaning of your cats wide eyes by looking at whats going on around her and her other body language cues. For example, when my cat, Bella, gets surprised, her pupils go wide and she jumps up in the air with the classic bottle brush tail. Wide cat pupils can also indicate excitement. When you pull out your cats favorite treats, her pupils may get wide in anticipation.

On the other hand, wide cat pupils may indicate anxiety. If your cat is sitting there, looking tense , and her pupils are also wide, you can assume that shes anxious about something. Youve probably seen this when you take your cat to the vet and she really doesnt want to be there.

Wide cat eyes can also indicate abject terror. Maybe youve seen this if youve been in a huge thunderstorm, just before your cat runs for the smallest and darkest place she can find.

At What Age Do Kittens Change The Color Of Their Eyes

When kittens are first born, the eyes are sealed shut. They are blind and deaf, relying completely on their mother to live. Seven to ten days later, the eyes will start to open and will be a cloudy shade of blue. At around six weeks, this color may start to change.

Anywhere from three to eight weeks, some kittens may develop flecks of color in their eyes. At the age of ten weeks, the kitten’s eyes will have vision as good as an adult cat.

The Meaning Of Wide Dilated Pupils

At the other extreme, your cats eyes might be close to fully consumed by their dilated pupils, this can mean a couple things too

    • Excited
    • Scared

As these are completely different emotions you should look for some other body language before trying to play if they have these eyes – startling your cat when they are anxious you might scare them even more. Sometimes cats can give this look when theyre feeling guilty or have just been cheeky.

Again, consider your cats posture and what is going on around them, if they are backed into a corner with wide eyes and dilated pupils, you should try not to intimidate them further. On the other hand, if youve just brought out a toy, treat or meal and their pupils expand theyre probably showing some anticipation and excitement.
