Why Does My Cat Have Runny Poop

Don't Miss

Can I Change My Cats Poop Schedule

What causes Blood in cats stool and how to stop it

You can change your cats poop schedule by changing their eating times. But, it is not advisable and, arguably, not an efficient way to deal with it. If you feel that the cat poop timing is a problem, then it is likely to be more of an issue of the cat litter location or the system you are using, which is easier to adjust.

For example, you could move the cat litter into another room, or location in your home, that does not cause as much interference.

Alternatively, the actual cat litter box could be replaced with a hooded litter box, or even a self-cleaning litter box .

Cat Diarrhea Cat Constipation And Pooping Outside Of The Litter Box

How about pooping outside of the litter box? Cat diarrhea is a common cause of this behavior, so if your cat has an abnormally soft stool outside of the box, then what you really need to focus on is the diarrhea.

Conversely, constipation also can cause cats to defecate in inappropriate places. This appears to occur because cats grow weary of going back and forth to the litter box without success, and begin trying to eliminate the contents of their bowels wherever they may be. Constipated cats may posture and strain unproductively in or out of the box, and if they produce stool it may be hard and dry.

Constipation isnt just miserable. Its also potentially life-threatening, and I have encountered several unfortunate cats who died from the stress of trying to defecate while hopelessly constipated. Cats with urinary obstructions can also sometimes look constipated or pass feces outside of the box while they are straining to urinate, and urinary obstruction is urgently life-threatening. Some cats with masses or tumors in their rectums or near their anuses will defecate outside of the box often with signs of discomfort.

Why Does My Cat Poop In His Food Bowl

If your cat has pooped, or continually pooping in its food bowel this indicates a problem that needs your urgent attention. It could suggest that your cat is not happy with its current liter tray, or whatever you have provided for it to poop in.

There are a few things you can try if this is the case such as:

  • Switch the litter box location
  • Try another litter box
  • Keep the litter box clean
  • Try using a self-cleaning litter box
  • Replace it with a hooded litter box
  • If its a hooded litter box, replace it with a regular one

The idea is to try each one and see what impact it has on the cat. Once it stops pooping in the food bowl then you need to stick with that setup.

Acute Versus Chronic Diarrhea In Cats

Acute diarrhea is quite a common occurrence in cats. It has a fairly sudden onset and lasts a week or less. The most frequently seen causes of acute diarrhea in cats include dietary intolerance, viral infections, and intestinal parasites. An abrupt diet change can easily give a kitty the runs. So can dairy products because, contrary to popular opinion, many cats are lactose intolerant. Because a cat’s emotions can easily translate into physical problems, a stressful event such as a change in your schedule or a move to a new home can trigger diarrhea.

Diarrhea is considered chronic if it persists for three weeks or longer despite treatment or repeatedly recurs over time. Chronic diarrhea can be associated with certain parasites, food allergies, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatic disorders, and systemic conditions such as hyperthyroidism.

Chicken Has Runny Poop

Passing runny poop can be an acute medical condition that only lasts a few days. Or, watery diarrhea can become chronic when it lasts for longer than 4 weeks and your symptoms of loose poop can come and go.

Cat diarrhea is a common cause of this behavior, so if your cat has an abnormally soft stool outside of the box, then what you really need to focus on is the diarrhea. Conversely, constipation also can cause cats to defecate in inappropriate places.

Soft poop usually isnt as urgent in its arrival, so your cat should have no trouble making it to his box. Regardless of whether you diagnose your cats poop problems as just soft or full-blown diarrhea, the causes are usually the same. In some cases, your cat may have caught a simple tummy bug which just needs to run its course.

Details For Your Veterinarian

Please be as detailed as possible about the color, consistency, and odor of the stool because this is helpful information for your veterinarian. Dont be afraid to take a photo. A picture in this case can really be worth a thousand words. Your cats veterinarian will want to know whether your cat is having more frequent bowel movements, if the volumes are larger or smaller than normal, if your cat is straining while passing the stool, and whether you have observed fresh blood or mucus.

When you are calling to make your appointment for your cat, ask if they would like a stool sample and request specific directions on how they would like this collected and stored in advance of the appointment. Having a stool sample can simplify the diagnostic process and lead to a targeted treatment for your cats specific issue. Since your veterinarian may also wish to do blood work, ask if your cat needs to fast in advance of the appointment.

Chronic Diarrhea In Cats

Causes of chronic diarrhea include:

  • Resistant infections

  • Poorly managed metabolic or endocrine disease

  • Congenital disease

  • Cancer

Chronic diarrhea is of particular concern because it can cause life-threatening complications. Long-lasting diarrhea that is resistant to treatment can often be multifactorial, with multiple treatments needed for complete resolution.

If no improvement is seen in your cats diarrhea within two to three days of initiating therapy, you should contact your veterinarian to check for potential complicating factors.

What Is Cat Diarrhea

Diarrhea is defined as stool that is softer, looser or more watery than it should be. Cats with diarrhea may defecate more frequently than usual, have accidents in the house, and may pass blood, mucus or even parasites in their feces.

Though most cases of cat diarrhea resolve in a matter of hours or days without intervention, cats who have it for more than a few days, or that show more severe signs , should be seen by a veterinarian immediately.

It’s important to note that smaller cats and kittens with diarrhea are especially susceptible to dehydration, so they should always be evaluated by a vet.

Change Your Cats Food

Yellow stool causes | 7 Causes of Yellowish Stool

There is no need to withhold food from cats who have diarrhea. In fact, doing so can hinder the intestinal tracts ability to heal itself and put cats at risk for a potentially fatal type of liver disease called hepatic lipidosis. It is best to simplify your cats diet, however. Eliminate any treats or table scraps and focus only on the core, nutritionally-complete cat food that you offer every day.

If you have recently changed your cats diet, go back to what you were previously feeding and see if your cats diarrhea resolves. One or more of the ingredients in the new food may not agree with your cat. Even if you are feeding the same brand and type of food as before but have just opened up a new batch, it might be worth buying a new bag or case from a different lot number to rule out the possibility of contamination.

More chronic adverse reactions to food can develop at any timea cat may have been eating the same food for years or recently been switched to something new. Many cats with food intolerances or allergies will experience relief from their symptoms when they eat a hypoallergenic or low-antigen diet. The best low-antigen foods are only available through veterinarians, but over-the-counter options do work for some cats. Look for diets that are made from novel protein sources .

When To Call The Vet

If your cat has diarrhea for two days or more, call your veterinarian. Cat diarrhea is an emergency if the feces are black or bloody, or accompanied by other signs of illnesslike fever, vomiting, lethargy or sluggishness, or lack of appetite. If those symptoms occur along with diarrhea, call your veterinarian immediately.

During an appointment, your veterinarian will ask you detailed questions about when you first noticed the diarrhea, how your cat’s diet or eating has changed recently, and what your cat’s stool looks like. Your veterinarian may ask you to bring a stool sample for testing , but also don’t hesitate to take a picture of stool in the litter box . Some conditions can be aggravated by stress, so be sure to tell your veterinarian about any household changes that might have rattled your feline friend.

Honesty is important here, even if you’re a little embarrassed about the topic at hand, or how long you waited to bring the cat to the veterinarian. Renee Rucinsky, DVM, DABVP , who owns a cat hospital in Maryland, understands that life happens, and time goes by quicklyso dont be shy.

“The veterinarian really needs to know how long has been going on,” Rucinsky says. “Telling us that it’s only been happening for a few days when it’s actually been much longer can really change the way we approach the problem. We need all of the information to treat the cat appropriately.”

Depending on the cause of your cat’s diarrhea, your veterinarian may also prescribe:

Diarrhea Is A Symptom Not A Disease Or A Diagnosis

Diarrhea is a common symptom of many feline issues and illnesses. Stress, diet change, gastrointestinal infection, feline immunodeficiency virus, inflammatory bowel disease, and even certain types of cancer can cause a cat to have loose stools. Not all of these situations require immediate attention.

Sometimes we can recognize clues to what might be causing the loose stools, such as, for instance, situational stresses. You may have just brought your cat home from the vet where she was boarding or being examined, or you just had houseguests that your cat isnt used to. Any such stressors can result in a bout of diarrhea. In the wild, cats experiencing stressful situations send chemical signals to their gut to empty everything out so that they can run away faster. Stressors such as these may have just put your kittys gastrointestinal tract into overdrive.

Mild diarrhea is also common in cats with gut disease when their diet is changed. Of course, diet change should not cause diarrhea, any more than you would get diarrhea if you ate chicken tonight and beef tomorrow night. A healthy gut should not be challenged by such variations however, most cats eating most commercial cat foods do not have healthy intestinal tracts. For those cats, diet change often induces mild diarrhea that usually self-corrects in a few days.

Can Cat Poop Be Dangerous

Handling cat poop may have an eww factor, but it isnt typically dangerous. That said, there is a concern that cat poop can contain a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii, which causes Toxoplasmosis. You can also get Toxoplasmosis from eating raw or undercooked meat. Toxoplasmosis isnt a big deal for most people who either wont get sick or show only mild flu-like symptoms. However, it is of particular concern to pregnant women who can pass the parasites along to the unborn child and cause birth defects or even fetal death.

While this sounds scary, its good to know that contracting these parasites from the litter box is not a common occurrence. Cats infected with the parasite only excrete it for a short amount of time, and the parasites arent infective for at least 48 hours. That means if youre scooping out the litter box daily, you greatly reduce the risk of infection.

Just to be safe, pregnant women should hand over litter box duties until the baby is born. If thats not possible, scoop and clean the box wearing rubber gloves and thoroughly wash your hands after youre done. Keeping your cat insidewhich is recommended by our strategic partner The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® for all catscan also help prevent them from contracting this parasite.

What Should The Color Of My Cats Poop Be

Hard And Runny Poop At The Same Time?

Either which way, a veterinarian will be the one who, after examining your cat, will diagnose and treat the condition accordingly. As we have already mentioned, normal cat poop should be brown in color. But, you may notice your cat releases green cat poop or even yellow cat poop. Different color cat poops will indicate different things, such as:

What To Do If Your Cat Has Diarrhea

Treatment for diarrhea should not be attempted at home. Always talk with your veterinarian to ensure your cat receives proper treatment. Over-the-counter medications and so-called natural substances used by humans with diarrhea may actually be toxic or dangerous for your cat. It might be tempting to try to change your cats diet as a way to resolve the diarrhea, but this is not recommended. Even if a food change resolves the current issue, it does not mean that the underlying problem has gone away. You could be delaying a diagnosis and proper treatment for your cat.

Your veterinarian will need to work through a list of possible causes by examining your cat and pursuing various diagnostic tests. The earlier that this process is started, the better the outcome for your cat.
