Many think of dogs as loyal, love-filled companions, and cats as cute beasts that tolerate us – but we might have to rethink that a little. According to new research, cats can get just as bonded to their human friends as dogs do.
This may not come as a huge surprise to those who live with cat companions, but it suggests two important things. Firstly, it looks like we’ve underestimated the depth of the bond cats can form with their people. Additionally, it shows that dogs don’t have a monopoly on secure social bonding with Homo sapiens.
“Like dogs, cats display social flexibility in regard to their attachments with humans,” said animal scientist Kristyn Vitale of Oregon State University. “The majority of cats are securely attached to their owner and use them as a source of security in a novel environment.”
In their behavioural experiment, the research team observed how cats respond to their owners in a strange environment. Previous research on rhesus monkeys and dogs had shown that both species form secure and insecure attachments.
In a secure attachment, a dog in a strange environment will, upon being reunited with their humans, relax and continue to explore. An insecure attachment, on the other hand, will see the dog continue exhibiting stress behaviour, either clinging excessively to the human, or avoiding them as much as possible.
Vitale and her team conducted a test of these two attachment types on 79 kittens and 38 adult cats.

The present study investigated the behaviours of cats and dogs living together as perceived by the owner. The perception of the owner is an important aspect for understanding the human-animal relationships as it could influence the owner’s approach to the two species. Moreover, the questionnaire is a widely used methodological approach to study behaviour and temperament of pets as owners can observe them in a variety of situations and over an extended period . However, the questionnaire inevitably involves a degree of subjectivity and some biases in the owners’ responses. The voluntary participation in the questionnaire and the imbalance in the gender of participants could further aggravate these expected biases. For example, owners who are experiencing a peaceful coexistence of their animals may be more willing to fill in a questionnaire in addition, women spend more time with their pets and generally tend to show more affective and empathic relationships . Further sources of bias could be the popular breed stereotypes, owners personality, sensibility, and expectations as well as cultural aspects . On the other hand, though, the large sample of owners and the possibility of examining the perception of a single owner on two paired animals supports the reliability of our results. Indeed, they agreed with most of the previous observational studies.

Cats have developed a bad reputation for acting aloof, independent and unaffectionate to their owners.
However, a ground-breaking new experiment has proved otherwise, with researchers calling the belief that feline pets are distant an unfair myth.
Researchers from Oregon State University say they have found that, just like children and dogs, cats form emotional attachments to their caregivers including something known as secure attachment when the presence of a caregiver helps them to feel secure and calm.
Dr Kristyn Vitale, lead author of the study, said: Cats that are insecure can be likely to run and hide or seem to act aloof.
