    Vaginal Bleeding In Cats

Cats in heat should not bleed from their vulva. For this reason, if we observe vaginal bleeding in cats we should understand that it is not part of the natural menstruation process and implies there is an issue which needs to be dealt with. Although we mentioned spontaneous cases of ovulation, these are relatively rare. If you spot your cat bleeding from the vulva, then you should take them to the vet for an appropriate diagnosis. Unfortunately, vaginal bleeding in cats could be due to a number of reasons, including:

    • Uterine infection

    Do cats have periods?

For years I’ve asked myself, is my cat in pain? And for years I have answered, no. She doesn’t have periods, so of course there’s no pain. That sense of certainty doesn’t explain why, after years when I thought she was doing fine, she suddenly refused to get out of bed, refusing to move at all except for food. It certainly doesn’t explain why, when I took her to the vet, he diagnosed her with kidney failure and prescribed antibiotics.

And it doesn’t explain why, for weeks after she started taking the antibiotics, she was as cheerful and alert as ever, but on the last day she perked up and looked around, like a cat who suddenly gets the idea of chasing a chipmunk.

    What Is A Heat

A heat is part of your kittys estrus, or reproductive, cycle. Its the time when she is fertile and looking for a mate.

However, in cats, that doesnt necessarily mean ovulation occurs. Cats are induced ovulators, meaning, ovulation happens during the heat only if a female cat has mated the act of breeding stimulates the release of eggs.

How Can I Prevent My Cat From Becoming Pregnant

The best way to prevent your cat from becoming pregnant is to have her surgically sterilized before she has her first estrous cycle. Since it can be difficult to predict when this first cycle will occur, most veterinarians recommend performing an ovariohysterectomy when a cat reaches six months of age.

Does A Heat Mean My Cat Will Get Pregnant

Ask The Vet, (Dogs getting their period.) Dr Yalda Motavali

If your cat mates during her heat, yes, pregnancy is a possibility, even during their first heat.

To prevent pregnancy, separate your female kitty from any male cats in the household .

Also, be sure doors and windows are secure. This will prevent your kitty from escaping to look for a mate, which will avoid not only pregnancy, but also the risks of getting lost or injured while outside.

Is There A Way To Prevent Heats

There are injectable medications that can stop a heat cycle. However, because of the high risk of serious side effects , most veterinarians dont recommend them unless the benefit clearly outweighs the risks.

Plus, these medications dont last forever. Cats will come into heat again, and thus need additional injections, further increasing the risk of side effects, and making this method fairly inefficient for controlling heats.

The best, safest way to prevent heats is with a spay.

What Does It Mean When A Cat Has A Period

Other female mammals of reproductive age have a period-like cycle, points out BBC Discover Wildlife, but they reabsorb the old womb-lining rather than bleed it out. This reproductive process, called estrus but more commonly referred to as being in heat, is what a cat undergoes in a monthly cycle when she isnt spayed.

How Often Do Cats Come On Heat

Do Female Cats Get Periods? What Are The Signs? â CatTime

Cats are known as a polyoestrus species. This means they can come on heat multiple times in a calendar year .

Female cats will generally continue to come on heat until they are mated and become pregnant. Oestrus lasts for 7 to 10 days and there are 3 possible outcomes:

  • The cat mates and becomes pregnant. She will generally come back in to season approximately 8 weeks after the birth of the kittens . This usually coincides with the time the kittens are weaned.
  • The cat mates, but does not become pregnant and has what is called a pseudo or false pregnancy. In this situation she can show all the signs of being pregnant but wont actually have any kittens. She will return to being on heat approximately 4-6 weeks later.
  • The cat does not mate. She will come back in to season 1 day to 2 weeks later and this cycle may continue multiple times unless she is mated or the breeding season ends.

Five Stages Of The Feline Heat Cycle:

    Proestrus

Not many signs are seen in the cat for this stage. The female is attractive to the male, but unwilling to mate. Length: 1-2 days.

    Estrus

This is when the female cat is receptive to the male. External signs such as a swollen vulva or bloody discharge, are not as obvious in the cat as they are in the dog. The main signs seen are behavioral — loud vocalizing, rolling on the floor, elevating the hindquarters and possibly a decrease in appetite. Many people have confused the signs of the feline estrus phase as signs of being in pain. Length: 3-14 days . If the female is not mated, she may go back into heat within several days.

    Interestrus

The period between estrus cycles if the female isn’t bred. Length: 2-3 weeks.

    Metestrus

The period after estrus or mating. Length: 30-40 days. If pregnant, pregnancy lasts on average 60-64 days in the cat.

    Anestrus

The period of inactivity between estrus phases. Length: 2-3 months.

Some general “rules of thumb” for feline estrus

The first estrus cycle usually occurs by age 4-12 months.

Cats are considered to be seasonal breeders most often showing signs of mating behavior in the spring and fall.

Cats are induced ovulators, meaning that they only ovulate if mated.

If not mated , the estrus phase of the cycle will return in 1 – 3 weeks.

Multiple matings produce more ovulations more than one male can be the sire of a litter.

    Do Female Cats Get Periods

Female cats do not have menstrual periods and bleed like humans and some primates. Just like people, the lining of the uterus does develop in preparation for pregnancy, however, it is not shed in the way the uterine lining of females does. Cats have a different reproductive cycle to us.

The signs of oestrus are mainly behavioural and can include:

    • Increase in vocalisation- this is often described as a yowl and is louder than your cats normal meow. It can sometimes be confused with an expression of pain or anxiety.
    • Increase in affection- towards people and cats alike. Rubbing against or weaving between your legs and rolling around on the floor. Although contrary to this some female cats can become aggressive towards their owners and other cats.
    • Change in mannerisms – when you stroke your cat along her back she will lower her front half, raise her bottom in the air, start to tread up and down and move her tail from side to side.
    • Increased attention to the genital region .
    • Reduced appetite

When a dog goes into heat – which is her period of estrus – she has a lot of hormones surging around her body, which can cause some changes in mood or behavior.

The average adult female dog goes into heat twice each year.

It’s generally advisable to get your dog spayed to avoid this.

Unspayed cats and dogs will have a period or more correctly come into heat.

How Long Does Pregnancy Last In The Cat And What Are The Signs

After the female cat becomes pregnant, her body slowly changes over the next 63 days as the fetuses grow. However, theres very little outward change in the first weeks of the pregnancy, and the first sign owners may see is a pinking of the nipples, which also become more visible. Shell then gradually put on weight, and as the day of birth approaches the milk glands begin to fill.

The females hormones also bring about changes in her behaviour and shell start to look for a good nest site in which to hide her kittens. Without the protection of a human home, the safety of her kittens is far less certain. In the wild, the site needs to be dry and well hidden, as it will be vital to the kittens survival. The female may even select several nests so that she has safe alternatives should any danger threaten her original site.

In a home environment owners may notice nesting behaviour . The cat will look for a quiet, safe and often dark place to have her kittens. Owners may want to provide her with a cardboard box or bed with bedding if it becomes clear that this is the cats choice of site to have her kittens. The bed should be suitable for snuggling into but should not be able to wrap the kittens within pockets or folds. Cats choose to have kittens in all sorts of places cupboards, under beds, in sheds etc some even on their owners bed.

    Do Cats Get Their Period

A few years ago, the New England Journal of Medicine published a study that confirmed that cats have periods. The study followed 1,149 cats for an average of 3.6 years. The cats were 6 weeks old when they were spayed or neutered. The study found that 91 cats had uterine infections, 55 developed uterine tumours, and two cats died. These rates were higher than in the control population of 8,304 dogs.

The study also showed that 9.6 per cent of cats were spayed before they were 12 weeks old, so their periods started early. The age of 12 weeks was arbitrarily chosen, and it is almost certainly too late to do anything about it.But the study raises a very different question: Do cats have periods? For an animal, periods are unusual. In birds, only the female contains the eggs. In mammals, only the female makes the babies. The male does nothing more than provide sperm. Periods are the female’s way of reconciling her reproductive role with her reproductive independence. They allow her to make babies without giving up her freedom. In other animals, such as reptiles and fish, the reproductive roles are reversed. The males make babies and the females are independent.Although mammals are the dominant animals on Earth, their reproductive roles are unusual. Other animals, such as fish, amphibians, or reptiles, do not distinguish between males and females. Periods, therefore, are unusual in mammals. We can see this by going back to our dog study.
