Keeping Sphynx Cats Clean

Owning a Sphynx Cat Part 2

While diet does help control a Sphynx cats overall greasiness, they will occasionally need baths to remove accumulated dirt and grime. Choose gentle cat shampoos that are soap-free and made with natural ingredients like coconut oil, like Earthbath Oatmeal and Aloe dog and cat shampoo.

Kranz adds that bathing a Sphynx is a bit like bathing an infant with claws. She says, I oftentimes use wet washclothsone with a bit of shampoo and another with just water. That way they dont have to be fully immersed.

When youre done bathing a Sphynx, its important to dry them off quickly with a soft, warm towel to prevent their skin from getting chapped. You also dont want to bathe a Sphynx too often because that will dry out their skin.

As Kranz noted, Sphynx cats are prone to ear infections, so owners must be diligent about keeping ears clean and removing excess wax. They should also pay close attention to their kittys paws, as grime can accumulate between toes and cause infections.

I clean my cats paws at least once or twice a week, says Dr. Verrilli. Unlike regular domestic shorthairs, theres a lot of active work that goes into keeping Sphynx cats clean.

Are Sphynx Cats Suitable For Allergy Sufferers

Some people who have found themselves to be allergic to ‘normal’ cats have successfully shared their home with a Sphynx. However, the breed cannot be described as ‘hypo-allergenic’ since it is skin dander that most people react to, and Sphynx do still shed dead skin – in just the same way that humans do.

Introducing A Sphynx To A New Territory Or To A New Cat

It is said that it can take up to a year for cats to develop a friendship. As an owner, you can play a vital role in making sure unfamiliar cats can turn into best friends.

  • Have both cats fixed. Cats that are not spayed or neutered tend to be more aggressive. To help curb those behaviors, have both cats fixed.
  • Introduce scents first. Before your cats meet face to face, let them get used to each others scents. Take an item with each cats scent and leave it with the other. Before they meet face to face, they will already know each other.
  • Let them meet from afar. Also before they meet face to face, it is a good idea to let your cats interact at a distance for at least a few days. The easiest way to do this is to have your cats meet on opposite sides of a closed door. They can sniff and paw at each other through the doors bottom gap.
  • Give both cats a safe space. Meeting a new cat can be stressful. It is important to have a familiar area where both cats can retreat and feel comfortable.
  • Allow your cats to share in fun activities. Positive bonds are built through positive experiences. If your cats play around one another, are given treats together, and are groomed around one another, odds are they will become buddies.
  • Make sure their territorial needs are met. When you introduce a new cat into your home, it is crucial to have separate litter boxes, food bowls, and water bowls. This helps your cats to feel more like roommates and less like competitors.

Another issue that stems from Sphynx cats hairlessness is that these kitties get cold more easily than their fuzzy cousins. Kranz says that if youre cold, your Sphynx cat is also cold. There are plenty of options for keeping these kitties warm.

Cat apparel made from soft fabrics can keep your cat warm without irritating her skin. However, clothes soak up those skin oils, so they must be washed fairly often to keep them from getting grungy.

There are also cat beds that can keep cats warm, like a cat heated bed or a cat covered bed. If your house is particularly cold, you can pre-warm beds with things like microwavable heating pads. And never underestimate the value of a snuggly blanket!

Its also worth noting that Sphynx cats shouldnt be let outside. Beyond the issues that come with regulating temperature in cold weather, Sphynxes lack of fur means theyre very prone to sunburn.

Both Dr. Verrilli and Kranz say that Sphynx cats make wonderful pets, if youre able to put in the extra time and effort that their care requires. Before I got my first one, I thought, Ive always had cats. How different could it be? The answer is VERY. Dr. Verrilli says. You need to be prepared.

Where Do Sphynx Cats Come From

The Sphynx cat originated in Canada! The first hairless kitten was born in Ontario in the 1960s because of a genetic mutation. In the mid-1970s two separate sets of hairless kittens were born, Bambi, Punky & Paloma in Toronto, and Dermis and Epidermis in Minnesota. It is believed that the American sphynx we love today originated from these two lineages.

Because of the renowned Sphnix statue in Egyptian culture, its a common miss-conception that the Sphynx cat originated from Egypt. In actuality, the Sphynx cat has nothing to do with Egyptian history or the Sphnix myth.

Other Notable Characteristics Of The Sphynx

The Sphynx is known for its energetic nature. It is exceptionally playful and they do not nap nearly as much as many other cat breeds do. Given that they are mainly kept indoors due to their sensitive skins, this means that owners have to find ways to keep their cat entertained so that they do not wreak havoc on their homes through boredom. A Sphynx cat absolutely loves to be up high, so owners often try to create cat highways in their homes so that their cats can wander around a room from a high vantage point that they enjoy having.

When a Sphynx does like to nap, it is in a warm place preferably next to their owners. If you are out intermittently throughout the day, think about leaving out heated cat pads that will keep your Sphynx nice and toasty when you are out.

They are an intelligent breed that can learn new tasks quickly. They are also extremely affectionate and so are a good option for homes with children. That being said, cats should never be left alone with the very young, despite how caring a Sphynx can be. And while their temperaments also lend themselves well to homes with dogs as well as other cats, care should be taken in the initial few stages of introduction, however.

    Sphynx Cats Have Big Personalities

Social is not a word some people would associate with cats, but in the case of the Sphynx, it is a very apt descriptor.

Dr. Ariana Verrilli, a veterinary oncologist at Upstate Veterinary Specialties in Latham, New York, owns three hairless cats and reports that they are attention-seeking machines.

My hairless cats run to the door to greet me when I get home. I cant sit down without having at least one of them on my lap… At night, they want to be under the covers. She adds, If youre looking for a cat thats going to sit in the window and sleep on the bed but is overall kind of aloof, dont get a Sphynx.

Sphynx cats are also generally known to be very vocal. If they want something, theyll let you know, says Dr. Verrilli. One of my cats will sit outside closed doors and scream if she wants to be let in.

While many cat owners welcome Sphynxes outgoing personalities, some people are just not up to the breeds social demands. My youngest Sphynx kitty was a rescue. Someone dropped her off at the vet clinic where I was working and said she was too much for him to handle, Dr. Verrilli notes. I believe it. Shes crazy, but I love that about her.

    Appearance & Characteristics Cat

Your first impression of the Sphynx cat is that of a Chihuahua, the small Mexican dog. You also notice its hairless body, although it is not entirely hairless. Any cat that appears hairless is however not a Sphynx cat. There are distinctive features and standards set by different cat organizations around the world that separate this breed from others that do also lack hair on their skin. Apart from the seemingly lack of hair, a purebred Sphynx cat is robust, medium in size and strongly built.

As earlier indicated, the Sphynx cats coat appears hairless. The coat is, however, normally covered with extremely short fur. The area near the muzzle is in most cases wrinkled. Interestingly, the coat can be patterned in any color.

The Sphynx is a medium-sized cat. While males weigh between four 5 kg , females weigh between 3 4kg . Unlike most cat breeds that do not need high calorie intake, Sphynx cats require high calorie intake to keep warm.

Whats The Price Of Sphynx Kittens

    Pet Sphynx Cat

Theres a reason that you probably havent encountered many Sphynx in your life theyre incredibly expensive.

Prices start in the $1,500 range, and they only go up from there. In fact, youll only pay that little if you can find a reputable breeder whos just starting out and willing to take less money in exchange for establishing their reputation.

If you want one with a premium pedigree, youll have to go through an established breeder. In that case, the price could easily top $6,000, and it could even be quite a bit more than that if you want a show-quality cat.

Given that theres big money in selling these cats, its not surprising that youll find some breeders who are less than reputable. To weed them out, ask for references, and tour their facilities if you can. These cats should be friendly and welcoming, even to strangers, so if theyre not, its a big red flag.

As you might expect, youre unlikely to find a cat this valuable in a shelter or through a rescue group. Youll almost certainly have to pay for one, so start saving your nickels and dimes.
