Kranz adds that bathing a Sphynx is a bit like bathing an infant with claws. She says, I oftentimes use wet washclothsone with a bit of shampoo and another with just water. That way they dont have to be fully immersed.
When youre done bathing a Sphynx, its important to dry them off quickly with a soft, warm towel to prevent their skin from getting chapped. You also dont want to bathe a Sphynx too often because that will dry out their skin.
As Kranz noted, Sphynx cats are prone to ear infections, so owners must be diligent about keeping ears clean and removing excess wax. They should also pay close attention to their kittys paws, as grime can accumulate between toes and cause infections.
I clean my cats paws at least once or twice a week, says Dr. Verrilli. Unlike regular domestic shorthairs, theres a lot of active work that goes into keeping Sphynx cats clean.

Some people who have found themselves to be allergic to ‘normal’ cats have successfully shared their home with a Sphynx. The Sphynx is known for its energetic nature. It is exceptionally playful and they do not nap nearly as much as many other cat breeds do. My hairless cats run to the door to greet me when I get home. I cant sit down without having at least one of them on my lap… At night, they want to be under the covers. She adds, If youre looking for a cat thats going to sit in the window and sleep on the bed but is overall kind of aloof, dont get a Sphynx.
Sphynx cats are also generally known to be very vocal. If they want something, theyll let you know, says Dr. Verrilli. One of my cats will sit outside closed doors and scream if she wants to be let in.
While many cat owners welcome Sphynxes outgoing personalities, some people are just not up to the breeds social demands. My youngest Sphynx kitty was a rescue. Someone dropped her off at the vet clinic where I was working and said she was too much for him to handle, Dr. Verrilli notes. I believe it. Shes crazy, but I love that about her.

Your first impression of the Sphynx cat is that of a Chihuahua, the small Mexican dog. You also notice its hairless body, although it is not entirely hairless. Any cat that appears hairless is however not a Sphynx cat. Apart from the seemingly lack of hair, a purebred Sphynx cat is robust, medium in size and strongly built.

Theres a reason that you probably havent encountered many Sphynx in your life theyre incredibly expensive.
Prices start in the $1,500 range, and they only go up from there. In fact, youll only pay that little if you can find a reputable breeder whos just starting out and willing to take less money in exchange for establishing their reputation.
If you want one with a premium pedigree, youll have to go through an established breeder. In that case, the price could easily top $6,000, and it could even be quite a bit more than that if you want a show-quality cat.
Given that theres big money in selling these cats, its not surprising that youll find some breeders who are less than reputable. To weed them out, ask for references, and tour their facilities if you can. These cats should be friendly and welcoming, even to strangers, so if theyre not, its a big red flag.
As you might expect, youre unlikely to find a cat this valuable in a shelter or through a rescue group. Youll almost certainly have to pay for one, so start saving your nickels and dimes.
