Why Would Poop Get Stuck To Your Cats Fur
One reason your cats poop might be getting stuck to their fur is because of its consistency. Do you have your cat on a diet of dry food only? If this is the case then it is likely that your cats stools are dry.
A dry stool has little rough areas on it, which are similar to a thistle, and that causes them to get stuck in your cats fur. A good way to loosen up their stool is to try including some wet food in their diet.
If this isnt the case, then the poop could simply be from an accident. A new type of food could have caused a stomach ache for your cat, which is why they had diarrhea. They may have a cold or other illness that could be affecting their stomach.

Reasons Why Your Cat May Have Pooped On The Couch
- In our experience, the main reason a cat poops on the couch or in your bed is that they are mad or upset. If it is in a spot where you spend a lot of time, you are likely the one the cat is scolding. Weve had this happen most frequently when weve left the cat alone too long, but it can also happen if you bring strangers over or you yell at your cat for misbehaving.
- The litter box is dirty. This reason is similar to the last one and has to do with your cat being frustrated about a dirty litter box. Weve had quite a few cats take out their frustrations by pooping on the couch.
- Your cat may be sick. Changing food can often lead to diarrhea, and if you have recently given your cat something new, its possible diarrhea came on suddenly before the cat could react. If it happens more than once, we recommend taking your cat to the vet to make sure its not something more serious.
- If your cat is getting old, arthritis may be setting in, and it might be too difficult or painful for your cat to get down to use the litter box. If you suspect this is the case, we recommend taking the cat to the vet to see if there is a way to help ease the symptoms.

Can Cat Poop Be Dangerous
Handling cat poop may have an eww factor, but it isnt typically dangerous. That said, there is a concern that cat poop can contain a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii, which causes Toxoplasmosis. You can also get Toxoplasmosis from eating raw or undercooked meat. Toxoplasmosis isnt a big deal for most people who either wont get sick or show only mild flu-like symptoms. However, it is of particular concern to pregnant women who can pass the parasites along to the unborn child and cause birth defects or even fetal death.
While this sounds scary, its good to know that contracting these parasites from the litter box is not a common occurrence. Cats infected with the parasite only excrete it for a short amount of time, and the parasites arent infective for at least 48 hours. That means if youre scooping out the litter box daily, you greatly reduce the risk of infection.
Just to be safe, pregnant women should hand over litter box duties until the baby is born. If thats not possible, scoop and clean the box wearing rubber gloves and thoroughly wash your hands after youre done. Keeping your cat insidewhich is recommended by our strategic partner The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® for all catscan also help prevent them from contracting this parasite.

What Is Fecal Mat
A fecal mat is easily observable, and can be removed simply. However, if you notice additional symptoms, such as straining during defecation or scooting on the floor, your cat could be suffering from complications associated with an untreated fecal mat.
Cats with long hair or who are suffering from diarrhea may develop fecal mat, which occurs when fecal matter gets stuck in the hair around the anus. Besides being unsanitary, a fecal mat can lead to serious complications if it begins to block the anus opening and prevents the cat from defecating. Its possible that infections, maggot infestations and skin irritation can occur if a fecal mat is left untreated.

How To Clean A Cats Bottom
Your cat may initially resist the idea of having its bottom cleaned. Do not rely on your cat having a change of heart and cleaning itself up, though.
Cleaning Wet Feces
Wet, fresh fecal matter is a risk to feline health as it contains Toxoplasma gondii parasites. It will also stain, smell, and look unsightly.
Wet Wipes
Youll need a damp cloth or wet wipes to tackle the stained areas. You may find it easier if you spray dry shampoo on the area first.
If you are using wet wipes, ensure they are unscented to avoid harming your cats skin. Pet stores sell cat-specific wet wipes. Baby wipes from a pharmacy are usually safe. Just avoid anything that contains perfumes.
Shampoo and Wash
In the event of a particularly messy cats bottom, a more thorough wash may be required. Fill a sink with warm water and mix in some cat shampoo. Gently lower your cat into the makeshift bathtub.
Cleaning Dry Feces
You may spot small clumps of dry poop clinging to your cats bum. You either missed a spot when cleaning up wet feces, or the cat has sat in its dirty litter. Either way, the cat is not cleaning its bottom.
Spray your cats bottom with water. Next, take a fine-toothed comb and run it through the fur. This will pick out some of the stubborn waste. Throw the comb away, or wash it using alcohol.
The rest of the feces will need to be trimmed out using scissors. Once youre done, considering shaving an area around your cats bum. This is advisable in long-haired cats.
When You Have Help
If you have someone else to help you during your cats poop emergency , have them gather cleanup supplies while you wrangle. Your cat will be more comfortable with you holding them than a stranger.
Cleaning supplies youll need include:
- Gloves
- Bucket of cold water
- Rag or bath wipes
Try and keep your cat in the room you find them in by creating barriers that discourage your cat from running away without actually trapping them. Dont try to chase/herd them into another room or throw something over them.
If your buddy isnt too against it, have them wipe while you hold your cat. When we say hold your cat, we mean by the scruff. Unless your cat is extremely well-behaved and mild-mannered, theyre probably freaking out because theyve got poop on themselves. Use a rag or bath wipe to clean your cat as best you can.
You might want to use warm water for your cat and save the cold water for any poop stains on the carpet. Depending on the severity of your cats predicament , you may have to dig deep and give them a bath. If youre lucky enough to have stocked up on bath wipes, use those.
Attend to your cat before any other messes. Trying to clean up carpet stains while your cat is trotting around making more is futile. Keep any other cats away from messes until youve cleaned them up.

Whats The Best Way To Clean Up Cat Poo
Use warm water with ten per cent solution of biological liquid or powder . Then rinse the area thoroughly, very thoroughly, in cold water and let it dry or dry it with a hair dryer if time presses. Clean wider than the mark you can see.
Cleaning up cat poop from a litter box should be relatively hassle-free, especially if you have an uncovered litter box, says Dr. Cathy Lund, a veterinarian with City Kitty Veterinary Care for Cats in Providence, Rhode Island. If you keep your box covered for convenience or appearance, youre probably just creating more work for yourself.
Diagnosis Of Fecal Mat In Cats
If you notice any of the symptoms listed above, take your cat into a veterinarian as soon as possible. Although you may be able to tell what the issue is on your own, you will still need a veterinarian to examine your cat to determine if the fecal mat has led to any complications.
The vet should be able to quickly diagnose the problem after completing a physical examination. However, the vet may need to perform tests to determine if the fecal mat has caused other issues. A stool sample may be taken to look for parasites. The skin will be closely checked for maggots, which can begin to breed in fecal mat if left untreated for a long period of time. He may also need to examine the skin underneath the fecal mat to check for signs of irritation, which often occurs in this situation.;
In extreme situations, cats will stop eating or begin vomiting after developing fecal mat around their anus. When this occurs, cats can become dehydrated. Be sure to mention to your vet whether your cat has seemed sluggish or uninterested in food. If so, the vet may need to perform a blood chemistry profile to look for signs of an electrolyte imbalance.

The Most Common Situations
Large pieces of poop caught onto the cats fur These are easy to see and also easy to smell. As you can see in the first picture, cats can get quite large pieces of poop stuck in their fur. Long-haired cats are more prone to this and you will need to trim it out of there as soon as possible.
Small pieces of poop caught onto the cats fur These are not so easy to spot, especially in long-haired cats because the poop often gets masked by the fur. This is a problematic situation because the poop in the fur can start a mat. In this case, you will need scissors and a trimmer to get it out.
Diarrhea in the cats fur This is very different from the other two situations described because it usually means that a large part of the cats fur is covered in diarrhea. It is very important to clean this entire area thoroughly every single time because diarrhea can cause skin issues.
Very small pieces of poop caught onto the fur around the anus This is probably the most common poop-in-fur issue. Sometimes, when cats poop, there are small bits that get stuck in the fur around the anus. They usually clean these out themselves, but some cats are less likely than others to be thorough in the anal region.
Cats with mobility issues may not be able to reach their anal region, which makes this an important problem for them because the poop in their fur affects the skin around their anus as well as their perianal glands. Other Articles for reading:
