Cumberland County Animal Shelter To Waive Adoption Fee For All Pets Next Week
Posted May 12, 2022 9:56 a.m. EDTUpdated May 13, 2022 5:09 a.m. EDT
Fayetteville, N.C. Cumberland County Animal Services is waiving its adoption fee for all pets from Monday until next Saturday.
Animal Services Director Elaine Smith said that the shelter will need to be cleaned out due to a state mandated re-surfacing of all the floors in kennels for large dogs.
Smith said pet owners surrender their animals to the shelter frequently, while other owners let their animals run loose, which increases the likelihood of them mating with other animals or getting lost and being picked up by animal control officers.
Cumberland County has around 50 pets up for adoption, according to a database of adoptable pets from Cumberland County.
Three years ago, Cumberland County Animal Services had the highest intake numbers in the state. But since then, the shelter has implemented programs to prevent feral cats from being brought into our shelter for euthanasia and assists owners with finding new homes for their pets rather than surrendering them to the shelter, Smith said.
In 2021, the shelter took in 6,402 animals 3,372 dogs and 2,694 cats.
Before Smith was director, she said that the shelter did not really do any promotional events. If the animal shelter got too full, the animals had to be euthanized.
” something we really don’t like to do,” she said.
“What have found the same quality of adopters, whether its free or full-priced,” she said.

Why Should You Adopt
Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.
What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?
When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.
So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
