Do not use pure chlorine, ammonia, or cleaners based on citrus fruit when doing so. Using any of them may be too strong for your cat and cause aversion to the litter box. Cleaning Vs Scooping: Whats The Difference

Aloha Kitty Cat Litter Mask (Set of Three in 1 package ...

You should tend to your cats litter box every day. This means taking the time to scoop out any clumps of waste that you see inside and either putting them in the trash or dumping them in a storage container of some sort.

Not only will this keep your house smelling fresh and your cats bathroom clean and sanitary, but it also forces you to look at your cats waste. This is a good way to keep tabs on their health, as youll want to know as soon as possible if theyre not peeing much or have diarrhea or something like that.

Cleaning, on the other hand, involves replacing every bit of litter inside the box and scrubbing the box itself. Its a much more thorough and involved job, and it should be done every few months, even if youre meticulous about scooping every day.

If you use litter liners, you may not need to clean the box itself unless theres been a leak. All you may need to do is replace the liner and refill it with fresh litter.

Choose The Right Litter

Choosing the right kind of kitty litter isnt as easy as it sounds. There is litter made from clay, synthetics, paper, corn, and wood. It can be scented, unscented, clumping, or non-clumpingtalk about overwhelming options!

In general, clumping litter tends to prevent odors the best. Ive also found that scented litter does nothing but barely mask the smell, and you usually end up with a sickening scent of some kind of flower mixed with urine. Unscented litter with specific odor-reducing agents has been working well for us.

When picking out litter, remember that your cats preference matters. Some of our feline friends are especially picky about their choice of litter. If they dont like it, youll end up cleaning cat poop off the floor, and that definitely wont help with the smell.

Do You Wear A Mask When Cleaning The Litterbox

Tips on cleaning your cat’s litter box | realestate.com.au

I was just curious to know if you wear a mask to clean out the litterbox. Mark usually takes care of the litterbox, and he can’t be bothered with a mask, but when I clean it, I feel that it’s safer. Anybody else have opinions on this?

Nope I never do. Not even at the shelter when I’m cleaning all the kitty boxes there. Though there are times when I have to put my shirt over my nose and mouth if someone has made an especially stinky mess for me!!

I clean our 2 litter boxes. I wear contacts and I don’t use a mask. They are not that dusty, and cleaning them each day keeps the odor down.

Many people have had a lot of questions about being safe around animals during pregnancy. The most commonly asked question is Is it safe to be around cats when youre expecting? We hope to answer that question and maybe give a few more tips about being safe around pets when you or a loved one is expecting.

Is it safe to be around cats? The short answer is yes, but precautions should be taken to protect the mother. Generally when people ask this question, they have the disease toxoplasmosis in mind. Toxoplasma is a parasite that can be very harmful to an unborn baby if the mother acquires the infection for the first time during pregnancy. It can cause miscarriage, neurological defects , blindness, and other symptoms. Some of these symptoms may not be apparent at birth, but they may become evident as the child grows. Cats pick up this infection by ingesting small animals . For this reason, we recommend keeping your cat indoors to minimize hunting of small prey. Infected cats shed the parasite in the feces. It takes one or more days for the parasite to develop in the cats feces to an infective form.

Still Dealing With A Stinky Litter Box

If youre still noticing a smell, or your cat is not using his litter box appropriately, try these tips:

  • The ratio of cat to litter box must be 1:1, with one additional box if possible. In other words, if you have two cats, you should have three boxes, one for each cat, and one extra. The same goes for the levels of your home. If you live in a two story house, you should have three litter boxes, one for each level, and an additional one.
  • Veterinarian Marty Becker recommends an odor-eliminating clumping clay, like Fresh Step Odor Shield Litter. In the feature The Vets Will See You Now in the March 2017 issue of Real Simple Magazine, Becker warns that a cat refusing to use the litter box could be a cleanliness issue, and changing the type of litter or your litter scooping habits could fix the problem.

Can Cat Litter Hurt Your Eyes

If your eyes burn while you clean out the box, you could be exposing yourself to too much ammonia. Although its more common to experience ammonia toxicity from cleaning supplies, its possible to get it from a neglected litter box. Dont let your litter box get to the point where it reeks of ammonia.

    Invest In A Sturdy Box

    Pet Supplies Auto

The first step in creating your good litter box cleaning routine is acquiring the box. It’s a good idea to choose a sturdy plastic box with nice straight corners that will be easy for you to get your scooper into. A large, flat storage box can work quite well as a litter box .

Many people prefer covered litter boxes because they hide the sights and smells inside the box. However, many cats don’t like their litter box to be covered because it traps the scents into the small space, making them too strong for their heightened senses. Some cats have trouble fitting into the position in which they like to eliminate when there is a cover on the box. A cover also creates an extra thing for you to clean routinely. Still, covered models used without the covers make great litter boxes because they have high sides to keep litter and waste contained and easy entryways for your kitty to get in.

    Cat Litter Box Smell Hacks

Cleaning your cat litter box regularly should help to keep it smelling fresh, but there are extra measures you can take to prolong the freshness.

    • Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda on the bottom of the tray before refilling it with litter. Baking soda is super absorbent so it can help to keep nasty smells at bay.

    • Try a different type of litter. Some cat litters are specially designed to fight odours so it could be worth trying a new brand. Wheat litter is also a good option as it naturally helps control odour. Also you may find that clumping litters are better at fighting odours than non-clumping variants.

    • Make sure the room is well-ventilated. Donât hide the litter box away in a dark, enclosed space â this will just make the smell worse. Keep your litter box in a well-ventilated area and be sure to prop a window open regularly.

    Risk Of Fungal Infection:

Ringworm is a skin infection caused by a group of fungi. An infected kitty most often comes from environments housing large numbers of animals.

In cats, ringworm usually appears as a dry, gray, scaly patch on the skin. In people, ringworm often appears as a round, red, itchy lesion with a ring of scale around the edge. Lesions may be found in a variety of places, including the scalp, the feet , the groin, or the beard.

Ringworm is transmitted by contact with an infected animals skin or fur, either directly or from a contaminated litter box. Infected cats continuously drop fungal spores from their skin and fur.

These spores, which remain capable of causing infection for many months, are difficult to eradicate from a household. Children are particularly at risk of infection and becoming sick.

Treatment involves the use of either topical antifungal ointments or oral antifungal medication, depending upon the severity and location of lesions.

To reduce environmental contamination, confine infected cats to one room until they are free of infection, then thoroughly clean and disinfect the household.

The Meow Place Reviews Fresh Step® Clean Paws Cat Litter

I have only two requirements for a vacuum: It has to 1) work really, really, well, and 2) not make rock-concert-level-decibel noise as it’s working really, really well. I just like quiet vacuums, because I’m old and loud noises make me nervous, and also I live in an apartment building and don’t want to disturb my neighbors if I’m vacuuming at wee hours. Plus, I don’t want to freak out my pets.

Disclaimer: As a testament to how amazing this vacuum is, I’ve had it for six years and it still works like new. In fact, I’ve had it for so long that it is no longer available as the model I own the newer model looks a bit different than the one pictured above, but still has all the same features, just in a ~new and improved~ package.

At $299, it’s not cheap, but given its quality and how long this bad boy been chugging along with zero issues, it’s absolutely worth the investment if you’re in the market for a new vacuum, imho.
