Homemade Tuna Cat Treats Your Cat Will Go Crazy For

I’m so excited to share this recipe for diy cat treats with you. Introducing my homemade two-ingredient tuna cat treats, that take just minutes to make, and are naturally grain, gluten and dairy free!

These diy cat cat treats were borne out of necessity when I started harness training Lyra and Lola, and needed to find a snack that I could give them as a reward. Commercial cat biscuits went down well, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that they were full of all sorts of mystery ingredients, and pretty carbohydrate heavy.

Then I tried tinned tuna, which was another winner, but I ended up with flakes of tuna ALL over the house – NIGHTMARE! .

Finally, I scoured the internet looking for diy cat treat recipes I could make at home, but all of the ones I could find relied heavily on the very grains and cereals that I’d tried to steer away from in the commercial treats. So I decided to come up with my own recipe, and let me tell you – they have gone down a storm!

Making these treats was such a fun activity to do with the cats – Lyra and Lola loved ‘helping’ me in the kitchen . And even fussy eater Lyra now goes doo-lally for them.

For those of you that are whizzes in the kitchen, you’ll probably recognise the method… this is essentially a tuna meringue, without the sugar.

Mull that one over… or let’s just get straight on with the recipe!

Lives Daily Essentials With Chicken Beef & Salmon Dry Cat Food

Purina Friskies Flaked Tuna & Egg Cat Food

With whole ground corn as the first ingredient, 9 Lives Daily Essentials with Chicken, Beef & Salmon Dry Cat Food is lower quality compared to most foods on the market. Preferably, whole meat or meat meal needs to be the first ingredient in any cat food not a grain. Chicken by-product is included as the second ingredient. This is a meat product, but it is of lower quality than some of the other options.

The third and fourth ingredients corn gluten meal and soybean meal are both protein additives that raise the foods protein content. However, this protein does not come from meat, making it a poor choice for most felines. This food does have a protein content of 30%, which is about average.

This food claims to contain beef and salmon. However, it does not include much of either of these animals. Beef fat is included. Meat and bone meal are also added, but this is one of the lowest quality meat options out there. It is literally mystery meat and could be anything. Salmon meal appears further down on the list and there is no other beef to be found.

Omega fatty acids are added, likely due to the fish meal.

A Closer Look At The First Five Ingredients

Water: As you might expect, water is mostly added for moisture and cooking purposes. It does not add any nutritional value to the food.

Fish: The fish used in canned pet foods usually includes parts of the fish not typically used for human consumption. It is high in phosphorus and magnesium, which can be an issue in cats with a history of urinary tract disorders or kidney disease. Most fish used in pet food is that of very low quality, including farmed fish and discarded fish that is deemed unacceptable for human consumption. There is also a risk of mercury exposure as many types of fish contain a high mercury level. Over long periods of time, this can become hazardous. It is also important to try and find a cat food with ethoxyquin free fish. Most cat food brands do not disclose if their fish is ethoxyquin free and if it isnt, that could pose some problems. Most cats love the taste of fish and will be happy to eat it, but it isnt part of a regular diet for wild cats. Nonetheless, this is a high protein source with essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

Artificial and natural flavors: Both artificial and natural flavor ingredients are considered to be lower quality ingredients. Since we are looking at two different ingredients here, lets check out what natural flavor is first. The actual definition of natural flavor is very long and confusion, but basically states that the flavor of an item can be extracted, then sprayed onto other products. Natural and artificial flavors are produced in the same factories these days. Both are considered safe, but artificial and natural flavors alike can be dangerous depending on what they are. It is actually best to avoid flavoring altogether, both natural and artificial.

Artificial flavor is usually derived from petroleum. Most have not been studied for safety or toxicity. They are all synthesized chemicals that dont even have common names. Most artificial flavors actually contain many chemical ingredients, not just one. Many of those chemicals are volatile. In short, both natural and artificial flavors are chemical based ingredients and we dont get all that excited when we see either one of those ingredients listed, let alone both together. Both of these ingredients have potential allergy risks and other possible health problems in cats.

Choline chloride: Like humans and many other species, cats require choline. Almost all commercial pet food blends will contain supplemental choline. This ingredient mostly helps with cell function.

Should Your Cat Eat Homemade Cat Food

It is generally recommended that pet owners purchase prepared pet food to ensure that their pets are getting the nutrients they need. It can be difficult to recreate the balance of commercially produced pet food when youre creating it at home.

However, I recognize that there are circumstances that may occur which require you to make homemade cat food for your pets. These situations can include budget concerns, emergencies and more.

Furthermore, I live in an area that is densely populated by barn cats and other strays. They dont have access to commercial cat food, yet they survive and even thrive. They do this because they are instinctive hunters, and our area offers a lot of natural prey. Clearly, a cat does not need commercially produced food to survive.
