Emmys : Debbie Allen Full Backstage Interview

Jay Leno’s Cat Video

Jay Leno is opening up about his epic plane stunt. In an exclusive interview with ET’s Lauren Zima, the 71-year-old former late night host revealed what possessed him to stick his head out of the nose hatch of a Grumman Albatross during a recent flight with friends.

“My friend said, ‘The front of the plane opens,’ so I opened the front and then came out and crawled out on the front of the plane,” Leno told ET. “Then, of course, they have to try to buzz the mountain. It’s just men behaving stupidly is basically what it is.”

“It doesn’t make any sense. It’s so stupid,” he added. “I was just trying to have some fun with my friends, and of course they had to video it with an iPhone.”

Leno was inspired to do the stunt when he realized his friend was sleeping.

“I wanted to get out on the front of the plane, so when he looked through the windshield he’d see me outside and not realize what was going on,” he said. “That’s what happened and it worked pretty good.”

Podcast host and TV writer Spike Feresten shared a video of the moment on his Instagram account, calling Leno a “wing walker.” Later, when Leno appeared on Feresten’s Spike’s Car Radio podcast, the former TV personality said that he wasn’t tethered in during the unplanned stunt, a fact he confirmed to ET.

“The force of the plane going forward was keeping me there,” he said. “You don’t plan something like that. You can’t plan it, or else someone will stop you if you planned it.”

Jay Leno Publishes Storybook

Long before Jay Leno entertains the adults on The Tonight Show, the comedian can put the kids to bed with his new storybook.

Leno has written a new picture book called If Roast Beef Could Fly, based on a real family cookout from his childhood in which mischief led to a ruined rotisserie of meat.

Simon & Schuster called me one day and said, Are you thinking of doing a childrens book? And I said, No! Leno told The Associated Press.

They said, Well, you know, one of our guys has seen you a number of times … And there are certain stories Ive told over the years that people seem to get a kick out of. And he said, How about some of those family stories, you ever think of doing one of those?

Leno decided the tale of his familys ruined roast beef might make for a few laughs. I picked this one … and everything sort of came together.

The book, with drawings of little Jay by artist S.B. Whitehouse, goes on sale Tuesday. It comes with a CD of Leno reading the story aloud, doing the voices and whispering asides to kids as they read along.

In the story, readers see Lenos mother described as a thrifty, reserved matriarch and his over-enthusiastic father, whose big ideas are sometimes too big for reality.

Everything with my dad was a project. You know, my dad never fixed anything it was a project. Men dont clean the kitchen, they sandblast it. My dad was one of those kinds of guys.

The story reaches its climax during a big family dinner:

Jay Leno Talks Adjusting His Comedy For Cancel Culture: You Either Change Or Die

There’s been much discussion of so-called “cancel culture” over the past year, as comedians are finding themselves under fire for material from the past that barely made a ripple at the time but is now deemed controversial enough for cancellation.

While some comedians are fighting the trend, veteran comic Jay Leno sees these type of societal changes as cyclical.

“I think it’s like any other thing, you either change, or die” the former “Tonight” host said in a recent episode of the “People Every Day” podcast.

Leno used a sports analogy to explain his reasoning. “In football, you have certain rules. And when the rules change, if you don’t conform to them, you’re out of the game,” he explained.

As Leno pointed out, there was a time when jokes now considered racist, sexist and homophobic were commonplace in comedy. That, however, has changed, and comics who haven’t received the memo are in for a rude awakening.

“Now, everybody has a voice. You have to change the material to the times you live in,” Leno said.

“My attitude is, Look, these are the new rules,” he said. “You want to adapt. If you don’t, fine. Don’t get up and tell jokes then.”

‘last Man Standing’: Jay Leno’s Joe Returns Amid ‘america’s Got Talent’ Controversy

Jay Leno Headlines Cat

It did not take long for Jay Leno‘s mechanic character Joe to appear on Last Man Standing this season. The former Tonight Show host appeared in “Wrench In The Works,” the second episode of the season, which aired on Thursday. Leno’s appearance on the show came weeks after he became mired in the controversy surrounding America’s Got Talent judge Gabrielle Union’s firing.

In the episode, Mike decided he liked working on classic cars with Chuck so much that he thought about opening a classic car renovation business together. As he explained to Vanessa , Outdoor Man is doing well enough that he does not have to devote all his time to the store any longer, and making more money is always a good thing. Chuck agreed that the business was a good idea, but he brought a friend into it.

Much to Mike’s horror, Chuck suggested bringing Joe in. Joe even ends up running the business, which terrorizes Mike even more. Thankfully Ed comes up with a brilliant idea for Mike. He could torture Joe and make everything difficult for him, which could bring some fun back to the endeavor.

After being pestered by Mike, Joe quits the business since he does not want to be a boss. Mike comes up with a new idea, nominating Ed to be the boss even though he knows nothing about cars. Ed accepted the gig.

Vanessa also has a project to keep her busy.

Two Asian American advocacy groups later called on NBC to cut all ties with Leno, who also hosts Jay Leno’s Garage for CNBC.

He declined an invitation to appear on Late Show with David Letterman despite speculation he would make an appearance on the show’s finale.

Leno has hosted an hour long Jay Leno’s Garage special on CNBC, and the show has aired as a primetime series on the cable channel since 2015.

RELATED: How Does Jay Leno Decide Which Cars to Buy for His Obsession?

In a February episode of Jay Lenos Garage, Leno visited Allens personal car collection. Although the two comedians have been friends for years, Leno stated that this was the first time he had been to Allens garage. The two walk around to different cool cars in Allens collection, including a 1965 Shelby Cobra worth about $1.8 million, a 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air that Allen says is one of his favorite cars ever, and a 1966 Ford Mustang GT 350H that Leno cant help but admire.

The two then discuss an episode of The Tonight Show from 1995, when Leno challenged Allen to see who could do a burnout the longest. Allen won back then, and Leno challenges him to a rematch this time in cars of equal power.

Leno and Allen each get behind the wheel of a 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat. What happens next is less of a competition and more like two guys just having fun doing burnouts in muscle cars. Allen and Leno take off in their cars and drive circles around each other, burning out their tires the whole time, never getting around to declaring a winner. The segment ends when police cars pull up and arrest the two actors for causing so much ruckus.

Timeslot Conflict And Return To The Tonight Show

In their new roles, neither O’Brien nor Leno succeeded in delivering the viewing audiences the network anticipated. On January 7, 2010, multiple media outlets reported that beginning March 1, 2010, Leno would move from his 10 p.m. weeknight time slot to 11:35 p.m., due to a combination of pressure from local affiliates whose newscasts were suffering, and both Leno’s and O’Brien’s poor ratings. Leno’s show would be shortened from an hour to 30 minutes. All NBC late night programming would be preempted by the 2010 Winter Olympics between February 15 and 26. This would move The Tonight Show to 12:05 a.m., a post-midnight timeslot for the first time in its history. O’Brien’s contract stipulated that NBC could move the show back to 12:05 a.m. without penalty .

On January 21, it was announced that NBC had struck a deal with O’Brien. It was decided that O’Brien would leave The Tonight Show. The deal was made that O’Brien would receive a $33 million payout and his staff of almost 200 would receive $12 million in the departure. O’Brien’s final episode aired on Friday, January 22, 2010. Leno returned as host of The Tonight Show following the 2010 Winter Olympics on March 1, 2010.
