Benefits Of A Raw Diet

Roasting the WORST Cat Food Brands | How is THIS Vet Recommended?

1. Raw diet leads to better digestion:

Unlike humans, a cat digests raw meat and bones quickly. Most of the enzymes found in a cats digestive tract are to break down proteins, and since a raw diet mostly consists of meat, it leads to faster digestion and improved digestive health. Even cats that suffer from sensitivities and digestive issues have shown improved digestive health when fed a raw diet.

2. Raw diet Increases your cats energy levels

Most owners that have changed their cats to a raw diet have witnessed a significant increase in their energy levels. Many have claimed that their inactive adult cats became as energetic as kittens after the transition. And this claim has scientific evidence to it as well. When a cats digestive system works more actively and digests food more rapidly, its energy levels receive a significant boost.

3. Raw food leads to increased appetite

Improved digestion and overall digestive health have a direct correlation to increased appetite. When a cat is fed a diet with tons of processed carbohydrates, each meal takes longer to digest and sometimes causes stomach upsets. With the increased digestibility of raw food, not only will your cat be hungrier more often, but it will also quit being a picky eater.

4. Raw diet leads to improved stools

5. Raw diet leads to healthier skin and fur

6. Raw diet helps improve a cats dental health

7. Raw diet generally improves a cats health

We Looked For Brands With Excellent Reputations

Remember that youre relying on the cat food company to provide your cat the nutrition they need to stay healthy and vibrant potentially for the rest of their life.

You need a company and a brand that you can trust. While it doesnt tell us everything about the brand, a companys recall history provides key insights into its ethics, safety standards, and the quality of its products.

If a company faces voluntary, or worsemandatoryrecalls every five years, purchasing from that company could subject your cat to three or more potentially harmful slip-ups during their lifetime.

A communicative, transparent company isnt afraid to share information with their customers. We gauged the quality of cat food companies by contacting their customer support lines and evaluating their customer service. We gave preference to companies that responded promptly and were willing to provide key information.

Additionally, we paid attention to what other customers were saying about the brand. Through social media, blogging, reviews on retail platforms, and sites like Consumer Reports, consumers can easily share their complaints or praises with the world.

We read these reviews and used them to assess the customer experience.

Is Wet Or Dry Food Better For Cats

The answer to this question is really based on your cats needs and your own personal lifestyle and budget. Most commercial wet food and dry food formulas provide cats with a complete and balanced diet. However, there are some major differences between wet cat food and dry cat kibble.

The primary difference between dry and wet cat food is that dry food contains less moisture, says Dr. Rachel Barrack of Animal Acupuncture in New York City. Dry food is approximately 10 percent water, whereas wet food is up to approximately 80 percent moisture content. Dry food is therefore more energy dense and may be higher in calories. Often it is also higher in carbohydrates.

Wet cat food generally has higher protein content than dry food, which could be a benefit to cats, says Carroll. Given that wet food tends to be higher in protein and fat compared to dry foods, when fed in appropriate portions, it can help keep cats lean and trim and thus have overall positive health benefits, she explains.

But wet cat food also comes with some drawbacks. While you can leave kibble out for cats to graze on throughout the day, wet cat food should all be eaten at meal times, says Dr. Shawna Garner, U.S. lead veterinarian at on-demand video consultation platform, FirstVet.

If youre trying to choose which formulation is better for your cat, discuss your options with your veterinarian.

Canidae Under The Sun

Dry, canned

Canidae has a few different brands, but I chose Under The Sun because its grain free and features single animal proteins. This brand has their own farm in Kansas, and owns and operates a manufacturing facility in Texas. They dont grow everything themselves yet, but thats their goal for the future.

Canidae Under The Sun offers a pretty decent variety of both wet and dry food.

Both the wet and dry food is grain free and made without potato or animal by-product.

In 2012, when Canidae was owned by Diamond Pet Foods, there was a voluntary recall of dog food products for potential salmonella contamination. Canidae hasnt had any recalls after branching off from Diamond.

Pros

  • Their food is a more affordable option without having to sacrifice quality
  • Widely available online and in-store

Cons

  • Under The Sun doesnt provide food for specific life stages, but Canidaes other brands do
  • Previously owned by Diamond, who had issues with recalls

Kitten Adult Or Senior

Whole Earth Farms Grain Free Real Beef Canned Cat Food

Cats are roughly divided into three age groups kitten, adult and senior when it comes to cat food.

While you might have a good idea of which bucket your cat falls into, Julien recommends consulting your veterinarian about your cats specific dietary needs in conjunction with age, and to get an expert read on what needs or restrictions your cat might be exhibiting. Kittens need more energy-producing nutrients like proteins and fats and more vitamins, minerals and water than adult cats, says Ferris. Formulas made specifically for kittens provide these nutrients in the right amounts.

Most cats will move from kitten kibbles to adult food on their first birthday. Ferris tells pet owners its important to gradually work in new food over a week to help avoid upsetting your feline friends stomach. Adult cat food likely has less calories than kitten cuisine, while senior food will likely be geared toward the specific health of your cat they might have trouble chewing or a reduced ability to smell and taste.

What Is Organic Cat Food

The information that can go on a food label is closely regulated by the food marketing industry. If something says USDA Organic directly on the label, this means in most cases that it’s been officially certified as organic by a third-party agent. This is a good thing, because it helps you make sure you know exactly what you’re gettingyou are going to be paying a little extra for it, after all!

Now, not all organic growers or companies choose to get this certified label put on their products, but most do. This means that not all organic food is labeled as suchbut anything labeled with organic definitely IS.

Organic cat food is similar. Some or all of the ingredients it contains have been raised or grown organically, which means the ingredients were rendered:

  • Without pesticides, herbicides, and other unapproved substances
  • Without the use of unapproved processes including genetic engineering, ionizing radiation, or sewage sludge

If a product contains ingredients that are free of harmful toxins and pesticides and not subjected to unhealthy rendering practices, then you can count on it being a healthy option.

In fact, not only is organic cat food made with healthier ingredients, but these ingredients are often considered human gradein other words, safe enough for human consumption.

We Looked For Foods That Kept Plant Protein To A Minimum

While its unclear exactly where each source of plant protein lies on the digestibility spectrum, we do know that protein from peas, potatoes, and other plants is less efficient than that from animal ingredients. While a single prey animal offers all the amino acids a cat needs, plant ingredients need to be combined with animal protein and synthetic additives to recreate that mix of amino acids.

Furthermore, many cat guardians report that their cats have less waste when theyre eating a diet composed primarily of animal-sourced protein.

Should You Store Leftover Raw Cat Food

Whole Earth Farms Cat Food

Discard raw cat food leftovers to reduce the chances of contamination. But if you must store it, seal it in a plastic container and store it in a separate refrigerator compartment for no more than four days. Remember to wash the plastic container afterward to reduce the chance of cross-contamination.
