What To Do If Your Pet Is Not Breathing
- Stay calm
- If possible, have another person call the veterinarian while you help your pet.
- Check to see if your pet is unconscious.
- Open your pet’s airway by gently grasping its tongue and pulling it forward until it is flat. Check the animal’s throat to see if there are any foreign objects blocking the airway
- Perform rescue breathing by closing your pet’s mouth and breathing with your mouth directly into its nose until you see the animal’s chest expand. Once the chest expands, continue the rescue breathing once every 4 or 5 seconds.

In An Emergency What Should I Do First
1. Keep calm and assess the scene for any additional threats to you or your pet. This is important for everyone’s safety.
2. Keep your cat warm , as quiet as possible, and keep movement to a minimum, especially if there is possible trauma, broken limbs, or any neurological symptoms.
3. Contact your veterinary hospital, inform them of the situation and get specific first aid advice.
4. To safely move or transport an injured cat, use a suitable container such as a strong cardboard box or a cat carrier . Place a blanket or thick towel over the patient.
5. Get to the veterinary hospital as soon as possible.

What Is The Specific First Aid For Some Of The More Common Emergencies
Blood loss. Once you have followed A, B, C above, if the bleeding is severe, try to stop it. If bleeding is from a cut pad or paw, apply a dressing using a piece of absorbent bandage or clothing. If the bleeding persists and is soaking through the bandage, do not waste any more time and get to your veterinarian, since this is a medical emergency. Most bleeding wounds will require medical or surgical treatment. If the wounds are treated within four hours, they can often be sutured. Deep cuts treated after four hours have increased risk of infection and complication, and require more extensive surgery.
Burns and scalds. Cool the burned area with cold water as quickly as possible. Cover the burned area with damp towels. If the injury is due to a caustic substance, rinse with cold water for 15 minutes and contact your veterinarian for further advice. Animals that have been exposed to heat or smoke from a fire should be offered water as soon as the situation is stable.
Eye injuries. Injuries to the eye are always very painful and can threaten the eyesight. If a foreign body can be seen, it may be possible to remove it by gently rinsing the eye with eye wash or contact lens saline solution . Do not allow the cat to scratch or rub the eye. Seek veterinary advice as soon as possible.

Edinburgh Cat And Dog Home Launch New First Aid Courses For Dog Owners
The capital cat and dog rescue charity has launched two new first aid courses that are set to take place in late April and beyond. The aim is to teach dog owners how to handle emergency situations with their dogs.
Edinburghs Cat and Dog Home has issued advice to dog owners in the capital to ensure that they are first aid trained in order to care for their pet in the event of an emergency. The call comes as the rescue centre launches their very own dog first aid course that will offer practical advice for a variety of emergency scenarios that dog owners may face when out on walks or in the home. Training topics covered will include choking, fractures, hypothermia and heat stroke amongst many other common injuries for our four legged friends.
Their first aid courses will provide an ITC certification and are understood to be SQA accredited as well as being endorsed by both Braid Vets and Abercorn Vets. Dog owners will be able to choose between a £40 Emergency Dog First Aid course that is three hours long and includes practical guidance and techniques and a Full Dog First Aid Qualification that includes the three hour Emergency Dog First Aid course but with an additional three hours of learning.

If your pet has a fever, she’ll also have an elevated temperature. But unlike those cases of overheating due to external factors, she won’t feel warm and she won’t be trying to cool herself off. Her brain has instructed her body to get warmer, not cooler. This is similar to what happens when people get a fever.

Good Info Pending Actual Vet Care
Im a retired people surgeon. I think the advice is pretty good the veterinarians criticizing it seem mainly and perhaps appropriately concerned that owners will use it as a substitute for professional veterinary care. Hopefully, owners that download it love their pets and will seek the best care available, as soon as possible. Sometimes, however, you have no choice, due to time or distance, and you need to step up. If there are specific bits of advice that should be changed, the naysayers would do more good by enumerating those concerns here, or better yet by suggesting changes to the app developer, or by suggesting another app. Simply encouraging ignorance is not helpful.

The charity added that it was also important to know when emergency treatment could be given, and when a visit to the vet was appropriate.

It is really important for owners to know what to do in those situations, their actions could prevent further injury or illness to the dog, or indeed save a life.

How Do I Perform Rescue Breathing For My Cat
When you encounter an unresponsive cat, the first step is to ensure that there is an open airway.
1. Carefully pull the tongue out of the mouth.
2. Extend the head and neck so that they are in a straight line. DO NOT overextend the neck in animals that have obvious head and neck trauma.
3. Carefully clear the mouth of any debris that may be obstructing breathing.
4. Place your hand over the cat’s muzzle while holding the mouth shut and extend the neck. For cats, you can sometimes improvise with a styrofoam cup or other similar shaped object, by putting the opening over the cat’s face and poking a large hole in the bottom for you to breathe through. Ensure a relatively tight seal around the muzzle.
5. Blowing into the nostrils, give 2-3 breaths and watch for a rise in the chest. If you do not see a rise in the chest, reposition the neck or search for airway obstruction.
6. If you believe there is an airway obstruction that you cannot see, turn the cat upside down, with the back against your chest. Give 5 sharp thrusts to the rib cage to try and expel any object.
7. For rescue breathing, provide 20 breaths per minute.
8. If the cat fails to breathe on its own, you may attempt an acupressure maneuver. Press firmly with your fingernail or other hard object in the space between the nostrils and the upper lip . Do this for 10-30 seconds.
